  • ...AMC Showed Off Its New Models
When the American Motors Corporation showed off its 1978 models to dealers and media at the "posh Omni Hotel" in Miami, the star of the show was the company's new "luxury compact car," the Concord, which was NOT an AMC Hornet but in fact a "totally new vehicle...the right car at the right time for the right price."
WTVJ-4's Bob Mayer, before driving off in a Concord for a future report on the new car, noted that AMC hoped that the Concord would "compete with cars like Chrysler's Volare and Aspen, Ford's Fairmont, and GM's new smaller intermediate cars."
In October 1977 "Popular Mechanics" said the Concord was "based heavily on the aged Hornet series that it replaces," noting that the Concord "is more luxurious, quieter, roomier and gives a smoother ride than the Hornet." AMC dropped the Concord at the end of the 1983 model year.

AMC really had to stretch the styling dollars back then as they had limited funds versus the other Big 3 at the time (back when it was the "Big 4") and it really showed in their models back then.

@@swlancaster1964 I liked the Hornet from the start, Was the Concord a "fancier" Hornet" Um Yeah.. But to me that was a GOOD thing. I'd love to have one now!

@@jamesslick4790 Yeah my Uncle drove his 350,000 and was still going strong. That straight 6 was a pretty good engine for hauling 4-6 people. Even though 6 people was pushing it a little in the room department.

Seeing AMC's by themselves makes people skeptical now. But they forget what a 77 Camaro or a 77 Mustang II actually looked like in 77..... They actually had about the same body lines as AMC.

It's amazing how much AMC actually was able to do with no money. The Hornet body shell cleaned up nicely. They drove well and were quieter than a Fairmont.

My school had the ford fairmont as a drivers ed car when I was taking drivers ed and then got AMC concords when my younger brother was in drivers ed, neither of those cars are in the same class as the Volare/Aspen.

Bob looked like an AMC dealer in this clip.
