It’s like comparing basketball to soccer. While the sports may seem the same, they have a few key differences. In this case, it’s the angle from which the pitch is thrown, the ball being closer to the plate, and the size of the ball
Eddie Fainer struck out all of the 1960s Boston Redsox. The King and His Court. He toured NA beating all top Senior softball teams. I saw him pitch in Woodstock Ontario. His combined speed and insane movement of the ball, up down down up left right right left. Was un-hitable.

I was on a fast pitch softball team while in Japan. Fast pitch softball pitchers are amazing. The bigger balls dart around more than a baseball unless it’s a knuckleball being thrown. Also does anyone remember the King and His Court? He and 3 fielders won almost 10,000 games.
I was trying to remember that name of that guy. He was definitely the greatest softball pitcher of all time. Remember how he'd sometimes pich from second base?
@@williamhermann6635tbh juicing only helps with power. And most major league hitters are strong enough to hit a fast ball down the middle, square, out of the park. I remember seeing this show. If I recall correctly, once he looked at a few pitches and got the timing down, he started taking half swings and EFFORTLESSLY tapped a bunch of them onto the field. Very eye-opening and actually got a bit awkward. It was VERY obvious he had her beat but took the highest road he could considering the lose-lose optics of the promo. Let's be honest: she had no pitching screen protecting her (are those even possible for underhanded throwers?) and he quite literally could have killed her with a comebacker off a full swing.
@@brendonbuffaloe8830 well bless their lady feminist hearts. The King made Willie McCovey and scores of other MLB HOF’s look silly. Check out Eddie Feigner’s story if you haven’t…amazing man.
I was once in the same situation in college. I was trying out for the baseball team and during an intermural game the female Ace of the girls softball team challenged a few of us baseball players the same way saying she could strike us all out. She struck out the first 2 batters but I was watching the whole time so when it came time for me to bat I made a series of adjustments like moving up in the box to take away some of her late movement, chocking up to quicken my bat speed, and opening my stance to get a better look at the oncoming pitches. Her first pitch was a riser out of the strike zone. On the second pitch, I liked it right past her left hear up the box and into centerfield for a single. She was stunned and I didn't give her a second chance to get me. I took my "W" and that was that.
Separate note: The arm movement of a softball pitch is a natural movement. Baseball pitchers use the strain of elbow ligaments to gain velocity. Hence Tommy John.
Softball pitches are also thrown substantially slower, which is a not insignificant factor. Biomechanically it's a much safer motion, but as a result the fastest softball pitch ever on record is only 77mph compared to over 105mph with baseballs. Baseball pitching motions get higher speeds, but it's no free lunch because it destroys the ligaments over time (or even can do it when throwing too hard just once if your body isn't used to the incredible strain put on it by a properly efficient throwing motion).
Girls aren’t strong enough to generate enough force to cause joint injuries throwing a ball. Also who cares about female sports. Jenny was a dime and still no one watched. Nice lady too, she came to my work once.
@@Pretzulkj I wonder what's the fastest a human could throw a baseball using a softball motion. Softballs are heavier than baseballs, so comparing the fastest ever softball pitch to a baseball pitch isn't quite apples-to-apples.
As someone who has played both baseball and softball, they're both different and difficult sports. You cant compare the two sports because they both have very different aspects
The Sports Gene is an excellent book which covers this. Barry would have struck out, not because she was better, but because his batting was based on decades of swinging against baseball pitches
Hitting a softball from softball distance with a baseball bat would be really hard. Give Barry a drop 10 bat and time to adjust his eyes and he would break records there too.
Men fast pitch players use between 26 oz and 30oz bats . FYI the best pitchers can touch low to mid-80s and they're men....check out isc mens fastpitch
@@bryanclouse9579 Still was good. Also don't try and count championships in baseball. You arent going to convince me an outfield of Darin Erstad Garrett Anderson and Troy Glaus is better then an OF of Trout Griffey and Bonds.
She maybe was the best woman softball player but not the best. There are many men that would dominate her on both sides of the ball if she played against them. It is like claiming Serena Williams was the best tennis player ever. Probably the best woman but not even in the top 500 of all men who have ever player the game. Same with a non athletic event like golf take the top woman in the world but she would never make the Masters tournament or beat the best men’s golfers of all time. That is why the mound is closer the bases are closer and fence is a hundred feet shorter in soft ball because women are not as fast or a strong . Good for them but it is women’s softball not. Shoe league baseball.
I played baseball for years and coach my younger sister (5 year difference) softball teams. If you have never batted against underhand pitching it is very hard to just step in the box and kill it. There are pitches that are not possible with overhand pitching and the angle of every pitch is completely different. If it's your first time ever trying to hit underhanded pitching especially against an elite pitcher you are mostly likely going to strike out your first couple at bats.
The only reason people struck out is because they’re used to different timing/arm angle. That is nothing compared to hitting a ball less than 2/3 the size
My guy, the mound is significantly closer. The ball breaks a lot more since higher surface area means sharper movement. Lastly the bat is a lot thinner. Baseball and softball have similar levels of difficulty, no one can go and play a sport that they are not familiar with, even Barry bonds.
@@Silvercy952it’s not about an unfamiliar sport, it’s everything to do with timing and angle. If he had a couple weeks in camp, practicing his timing, he would no doubt, dominate.
Both of these ballplayers are great. I watched the long version of this way back when. Barry was simply playing with her as he didn't want to clown her too badly. He made contact with every check swing and was very polite when he said she could strike him out. I love Jenny, but Barry would take her yard any day
I remember this when it happened. He actually was taking half swings and made contact. Explaining how he was hitting her pitch. Despite taking roids he had a good science in how he would approach and swing and connect.

it's because of the movement that plays a big factor baseball pitches mostly downward while softball it's upwards due to the pitching motion. MLB batters don't face pitches that move fully upward

My dad tried out for the Red Sox and could throw in the mid-90s. He didn't make the team and ended up an engineer. He learned how to throw fast pitch underhand and played in a league for 30 years. Occasionally, I'd catch for him. Used to scare the crap out of me.
This is like asking an ultimate frisbee player to play NFL level football they are very very different. Just because they both throw a ball doesn't mean they're the same as a baseball player you practice not hitting and staring at a ball that is not only traveling at different trajectories
realest response i’ve seen. he saw the same pitch 3 times and dinked it away just because he could. no way he doesn’t take it at least 280 for a gapper
nah, he wouldn’t. literally he himself said he thought he’d strike out. It’s because baseball players have never seen a pitch come in from that arm slot with that type of velocity and movement. That’s why all those guys were swinging under her riseball - because their brains couldn’t comprehend that the ball would just keep rising. The same thing would happen in reverse too. MLB fastball and softball fastball have the same amount of reaction time just about, but softball players would struggle to barrel it up against MLB pitching because they’ve never seen a 12-6 curve or a sweeper.
@@user-on3yl9in8d yeah I'm saying he wouldn't be able to touch it because he's never seen pitches that move that way before. Her riseball is the equivalent of a 95 MPH fastball that rises 18 inches. There's a big difference between making contact on check swings and actually taking a full swing. And it's coming from an arm slot that is already way different than any MLB hitter is used to. Weird arm slots matter a lot - it's the reason why submarine pitchers are effective despite throwing the same velocity as a high schooler. At the time of this video, Albert Pujols had a lower strikeout rate and higher batting average than Barry Bonds and he struck out miserably against her. The only way Barry would be able to touch her is if he saw a couple hundred pitches first so his brain could adjust.
He was just not trying to do anything wrong so he could still get with her on an off but he’d be pitching in that game she would be catching y’all didn’t see the way they both looked at each other with that super close hug at the end they definitely played a game of their own afterwards 😂

I will say it is way different from baseball and you can’t compare them.
A pitcher always has an advantage, especially if it’s a new style of pitching. Just look at batting averages. If any MLB player had time to adjust to the different pitching distance and release angle they would hit her pitches most of the time.
I remember watching a sports show where they had Jenny on to see how hard she actually threw. Her very 1st pitch BROKE their measuring plate. Broke it on her FIRST pitch. Jenny is the GOAT.
I grew up playing baseball alongside my sister playing softball. Numerous girls have challenged me to hit and I’ve never failed to get a hit. I’m also someone that only played to the high-school level and my sister pitched in college.
He probably didn't take it that seriously until he was there and actually saw her pitches. Then he knew that he had to save face. It's like a hockey player trying to figure skate. Completely different disciplines and techniques.
I haven’t watched the result yet but what I don’t understand is it’s not a fair contest, she is doing exactly what she always does and he has to learn a whole new pitching style to watch for the ball
No way Bonds would hit the rising fast ball. He didn't want to damage his own hype...and I'd hardly call Bonds the best baseball player in the world at the time.
I think that there was a good chance that he would strike out as it's such a different pitch that he has ever seen before... but playing around and getting some looks means that he wouldn't have gotten smoked automatically like other did due to the unusual pitch
He had an uppercut swing in though which isn’t good for softball you need a little choppy swing someone like Jeff McNeil would do better because of the swing

@@Gaming_like_its_1989no they wouldn’t hit it, you would have to change a completely different swing approach and the ball breaks more and gets there faster
@@sir.muffiniii7011 I disagree, I don’t think softball hitters could really ever get a decent hit off of a top mlb pitcher, certainly not consistently.
Just for context: he struck out Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Brooks Robinson, Roberto Clemente, Maury Wills, and Harmon Killebrew all in a row in 1967.
Sports science used flawed data. They simulated an average of 70mph on softball pitches that's around 10mph over the actual average. 70mph is the speed that your best softball pitchers throw and it's equivalent to a 98mph fastball. so it's almost the exact same reaction time. The players would just need to adjust to the arm slot and ball movement for both sides.
Here is the thing, fist at bats say 1-10 these guys would struggle, after that, dingers all day. It comes down to timing and understanding the movement of the ball. That is exactly what Bonds was doing, studying her

Basketball to soccer? There's some "key" differences? Yeah, I think u may be right

A rare moment. Mr Bonds being humble.

Same with a non athletic event like golf take the top woman in the world but she would never make the Masters tournament or beat the best men’s golfers of all time.

"That's a strike!"
Yeah, ok lady.
To her credit, Bonds knee was usually about a centimeter off the inside corner
Not where the catcher catches the ball but where it crosses plate. If it catches the front corner of the plate it is a strike
It comes in at a very different angle which is why it’s harder for baseball players. They don’t normally see that angle or speeds
Baseball and softball have similar levels of difficulty, no one can go and play a sport that they are not familiar with, even Barry bonds.

nah, he wouldn’t. literally he himself said he thought he’d strike out.
