This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.
This Core Concept video focuses on Simone de Beauvoir's work, The Ethics of Ambiguity, and discusses what she means in asserting that Existentialism is a philosophy of ambiguity. It also discusses why in her view ambiguity is integral to the human condition, and how some modes of philosophy go wrong in attempting to simply resolve that ambiguity.

Seriously, you are giving me the guided education my university (any university) simply cannot offer. I have gained such a wealth of interpretation and distillation from your videos. I hope you appreciate your efforts as much as 'we' all do. All the best Dr. Sadler!

Hahaha! I don't really appreciate my efforts, because I'm the one who has to make them. But I'm glad they're good for others

Thank you for this series! I have had a tough time understanding her book and this really helps clarifying her text for me.

Thank you so much for making this so accessible for those who are not immersed in philosophical discourse.

Thank you! I'm writing on the ethics of ambiguity for my dissertation at the moment. So I'm glad to hear your insights on the text.

    1) Can someone explain what “disclosure” means for Simone?
    2) What does Sartre mean by “man makes himself a lack of being so that there might be being?”
    Thanks for the great vid.

It's not something mysterious. What does "disclosing" usually mean?
      Read Sartre

How can this ambiguity exist with ambiguity in the likes of Trump where ambiguity is a Sophistry used for power denying the very agency of that power in its use of power?

No idea what you're asking. Rewrite it more clearly
