Flowkey has changed their curriculum pretty significantly since this video was recorded. The music reading training and playing scales courses are now right after intermediate piano training. So the course is actually currently laid out in such a way that the student is never asked to perform something they weren't already taught. Each lesson builds on previous knowledge.
So folks, go at your own pace, but don't skip around too much. The in-depth lessons on chords have been moved to the end for you already. 😊
Thank you so much for clarifying this!! I was feeling so overwhelmed by the intermediate piano playing lessons suddenly expecting me to be able to play all of these notes out of nowhere. I don't understand why they wouldn't put the courses in the order they should be learned in, but I'm very glad to know I should skip to the scales lessons. Thanks again!!

I'm 21, have had piano lessons when I was younger and also after quitting them learned some pieces i liked by myself but I never really managed to stay on track or get good at notes/sightreading or really playing the piano at all. Main problem being that I was never consistent. Trying to get into it again came across your channel just today, and I just wanna say thank you for uploading your journey. It's incredibly motivating and inspiring! Binge watching it now :D also very helpful reviews on all the apps! :)

Thanks for the info I started with simply piano but thought it was more of a video game then learning piano. I switched to flowkey. I don’t think I’ll ever go back.
Hi Christine, found your video interesting. I am doing a course with Pianote and also keyboard course with Jeremy See. I am eighty and have arthritic fingures so hoping doing these courses will help my fingures to be more flexable. I realize I am ever going to be a good pianist hence keyboard lessons as well. Christine, are you also a pilot? I'm on this video because after 40 years playing by ear I'm trying to find good ways to learn to read sheet music, but I happened to notice the FAR/AIM on your shelf. I'm also a pilot (20 years). I would be interested to know your journey as an aviator as well! What you fly, ratings, etc! I always love getting to know other aviators!
I'm glad I found this video because I could not agree more. As a semi-beginner, I have found that Flowkey progresses VERY fast in the lessons. Example: you learn about the crossover method in intermediate, and then the song you play in the lesson/course is not only in a key with which you're not familiar, but you're also having to move your hands outside of the notes and hand positions you've learned all together. It gets very overwhelming and discouraging quickly once you get into the Intermediate courses. I was about to cancel and go back to Simply Piano, but after this video, I might try doing the courses out the natural "order" (it's SO counter-intuitive to have them placed out of order and they should fix this). I hope that helps, but so far, given this criticism, on top of all the clicking you have to do to get through lessons, I think I've enjoyed Simply Piano more. We'll see, but thank you for your perspective.

Great video. Be really interesting to see how different you find it with a teacher. I’m the opposite I started with a teacher but now I’m doing it solo for a bit. Like you I do feel I’ll need to go back to a teacher at some point. I’m waiting for that feeling that I’ve plateaued too

I have just finished Intro to Piano on flowkey and was struggling to establish which order to following the courses - beginner, techniques and excercises, followed by Chords seems a good way to partition them but not logical to study sequentially.
I have reordered them to follow your advice. It seems logical. 🤞
I just purchased the Yamaha P-125 on back order thanks for the info I'll use the app. Unfortunately there are no piano teachers doing lessons where I live due to COVID19. I'll probably use this until I can find a good teacher when the virus settles down.
I purchased flowkey on annual basis and totally stopped for the precise reasons you explained on this video.
Thanks for the advice . I signed up just three weeks ago and the intermediate course is , Um , challenging . I’ll persevere with Bourree for a while now I’m tackling it but then go to Music Reading . Hello from Russia :-)

I just started with flow key and i was confused that it pretty quickly starts with playing songs. I realy want to learn the scales and master the chords. So thanks for the tip. Now i hope they have not changed much since its 4 years ago you posted this. I wished i started sooner im 41 now, always wanted it tho.
I've been working through flowkey in app order, and haven't had much trouble. I started to slow down with the two-handed playing, but that's just cause my hands have trouble adjusting to it. It feels like they've been gradually introducing more aspects of how to play, interspersed with new note types. It hasn't felt like I need to suddenly know a bunch of stuff at all.
But maybe the app's curriculum has changed in the last two years. Those three lessons are still at the end, but they come off more as appendices than beginner stuff.
If you start making videos again, it might be a good idea to do one on how flowkey has changed since 2019.
Thank you so much for your video, I was just about to give up because I found it really hard for my beginners level, I think I haven’t been taught enough to do some of the songs they ask me to do. After watching this video, I will stick to it and give it another go

Thanks for this Christine! I’ve recently subscribed to flowkey and whilst I was and still am enjoying it I became frustrated when I hit Swan Lake and saw there were additional notes that required a different hand placement. It felt like a theory lesson on how to interpret sheet music/how to know when to move your hand was missing. Hopefully your recommendations will plug the gaps in my knowledge.
Nice to see you back again. I’m looking forward to seeing your experiences should you start having lessons with a teacher. I focused on pre-recorded online video lessons for two years and just started with a teacher last month. So far it’s going well and just having someone to point out mistakes I make has been a great help in keeping me on track. In a way you have a little of that with doing video on CZcams.
I'm just starting out and did think it was asking a lot of me for a total beginner.

Surprised you havent tried playground sessions, it is excellent and would like to hear what you think of it as a comparison. It is pc based where you plug into it so not sure if this is benefit or not for you. It is sheet music based and has all the methods for learning like simply piano where you can work 1 hand or 2 hand , select parts of the sheet music only, slow tempo, feedback from the app where you must get 80% or more for it to recognize progression and has songs etc. Give it a try for 1 month try at least would make a good video :)
Honestly, I'd like to, but they don't offer any free trial of any sort. Also not having an app makes it more difficult to use since I can't just put my iPad on my music stand.
I had a similar start with simply piano / alfred books / group lessons last year and found it very nice to have a structure and was always motivated to get those stars. However, I think my learning sky rocketed when I started to take individual lessons this year with a teacher. I could not recommend it more, particularly if you plan on going through the classical piano exam curriculum. Look forward to see how you'll get on with flowkey :)
Thanks Peter - It makes a lot of sense. I am still going to try and learn on my own for a bit longer though. It's almost like the internet is daring me to at this point. lol. I've finished all of flowkey except a few of the scales lessons, and it was certainly useful for adding to my music theory knowledge, but I don't think it helped me get much better at reading music. Not giving up yet though!

I found the same issue when I worked with simply piano. It's completely different when you switch to reading actual music and I found rhythms particularly difficult as I did not just have someone telling me when to press a specific key. But start with very very easy stuff and with consistency you'll be amazed at how fast you improve, particularly at the beginning.
Also, do not neglect scales - I found that they helped a lot with playing pieces and hand independence even if I hated doing them at the beginning. Plus, if you ever go for exams it would be very nice to already know them and be comfortable with them rather than have to learn all of them on top of repertoire, sight reading, etc.

why dont they put it in the right order....
you just have to look at the color of the course color. just do all green in the beginning.
After using simply piano I found flowkey. But after 2 days using it I feel very stuck on their sound recognition. Many time I have to stop in the middle of the song and play again and again the same right note. It really annoys me. So unfortunately i will not keep this app. :( i hope simply piano will avance their app cause I think the app itself is much easier to follow.
Hi there! I found that most apps have this problem, especially as you start playing chords. The only way to resolve it is to get the right cord/adapter to plug your keyboard into your device so it uses midi recognition. Annoying but well worth it!
I was under the assumption that Flowkey was all about just learning songs. I am looking for structured and progressive learning along with theory. Is Flowkey laid out like this?
It's a good combination of theory and learning songs. There is a course section and then if just want to learn a song there are library of songs available. Having played guitar, I've started learning piano with Flow key and so far been pretty happy with it

Flowkey is not a package, and you won't pay for what you consume so is a bad investment.
