- On October 25, 2021 my husband and I moved with our 8 children from The United States of America to Gambia, Africa! We made this move without a backup plan! We are an African American family moving back to Africa. Going back home to Africa is a dream come true for our family. We'd like to share this journey with other families who would like to know what life is life moving to Africa from America.

Beautiful and healthy meal. I can see that you are enjoying Gambia. Having a good friend is so necessary for growth and development . Enjoy your journey. Remain blessed.
Wowru is called mortar and pestle in English-very much common throughout Africa
Binta is such a lovely, bubbly lady. I'm happy you have such a wonderful friend in The Gambia.🥰
Salaam alakium sis Binta seems so sweet and genuine, you are blessed to have her. I am Afraican American and my husband is Fulani Gambia they are good people. Alhamdulilah
Walaykumsalam Sis, Mashallah that's awesome 😍. And yes they are good people. Thank you!!

Your beautiful and children's are a blessings. We have a say in Africa the more kids you have the more wealth you have not money but in life its respected on a different level.
i wish one day can visit this Smiling Cost of Africa Country. Salam from Indonesia.
I am from The Gambia 🇬🇲 but this is the first time I see chicken yassa cooked in that way. Must people cook it differently without tomatoes and some of the vegetables she added. But everyone cook differently even from the same country.
This was also my first time seeing it cooked with tomatoes....it looks good!! I think I will try it 😋😋😋
@@aissatamuhammad2581 Yes I was born in Senegal and raised in USA and I’ve never seen it this way, it’s usually lots of onions, no vegetables at all except sweet peppers for decoration.
@@mintou1977 Yassa lu neex 😋😋😋 It is my favorite dish!!
Me too this was new but well looks good
That's great that you have a local sister who has adopted you and is helping you with your transition. One thing about Gambia, and Senegal is that they eat rice daily. But you will get used to. Rice is the staple food from Senegal all the way to Liberia. But in Sierra Leone and Guinea, they have varieties of stews unlike Gambia. Now, the mortar is used as blender is used in the west.
I disagree with you about Gambia Don have different varieties of food. Don't for get that we have 8 different tribes and all have their dishes. Adding to that includes Sierra leone which my great grate grandparent came from.
In The Gambia, every day has a special dish to be cooked I’ve been to all our surrounding countries none has the varieties we have due to the multicultural heritage remember all other countries around us are of an inhabitants to The Gambia so every special dish from those countries you name it is well known in Gambia Freetown, Senegal, Guinea Bissau, Guinea Conakry, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Nigeria, Cape Verde, Mali, you name it and all of their foods are national dishes to the Gambian people
I love my friend ❤️. She and I are very close as if we grew up together. It's crazy she really feels like my real sister.
@@uzyozyoybe1840 Gambia and Senegal don't have diversity of food like Guinea, Sierra Leone and other countries in the West African subregion. Everything you guys eat is rice, mostly benachin ( known as Tiebou Djenn in Senegal). If you travel to countries like Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, you will see more diverse dishes made of cassava, plantain, yam, millet and so on.
@@lgnawa Well either you don't understand what diversity means. I think I mentioned earlier that we have different cultures in Gambia particularly am speaking for. Fulani, sarahule, jola, wolof, aku, mandika, serer, manjako, balanta, adding the mauritania andLebanese, so is that not diversity for different dishes. So if all this make their own dishes is that one? Another thing what makes us different from the rest if we still have similar cultures and same names?
Yes! The way she cut that onion 🤺and now I'm like 👩💻 I need to learn that.
Right sis!!! 😂 the sad part is I tried this a few days ago and ended up using the cutting board haha!!
@@summersinafrica Amina, you know what sis? Americans use cutting boards🤣🤣🤣. We're American born and raise, and ain't nothing wrong with that🧕🧕❤
In Gambia that’s how we do. Binta cook very well 😋
This is my first time seeing it made with chicken breast. Still looked great!😋
SHE IS delightful! Jerejef Binta! xxx
I don’t know what it is about those pots😂 Cooks food the best! Maa shaa Allaah, looks delicious ,chicken yassa is so good!

I love this MashaAllah. I'm Panamanian american and I don't use a cutting board for onions and certain thing either. I cut in my hand too lol 🥰
Mashallah wooow!! Hopefully I can learn to do this. I've been practicing, but I don't have my confidence on full yet😂
In English, that chopping tool is called "morter and pestal"
Yes they have in supermarkets but in small sizes 😅

Yes!!! She is such a queen 😍😍😍❤❤❤. Thank you for watching sis!!
Wow lovely, wholesome meal MashaAllah, I bet it tasted awesome!
I'd cheat the cutting and just dump it all in my chopper, that's how I cook usually😆 I'm soo happy to see you every Friday
Hahaha! I tried to cheat and chop them real fast and she said no way!😂😂 She said I was messing everything up lolol!
So happy you're enjoying watching, thank you!!
The wooden equipment is called mortar and the handle is called pestle
Masha Allah! Love the sisterhood

She's beautiful, you're beautiful and that food looked delicious!!! For a minute there I was concerned...lol!!!
Shalom...Sis thanks for bring us such good video's, this one brought me back to the Gambia in my spirit. It helped me to remember the first time; my sister in-laws showed me how to make benachin for my husband and the family. We had so much fun that day for now I'm still in the U.S. where I'm from. I pray to return to my real home soon... The Gambia it's people and it's good food...Shalom Sis much thanks
Thank you!! I'm looking forward to learning how to make Benachin also. Hopefully this Ramadan I can learn it Inshallah.
Greetings Summers in The Gambia, loving the cooking videos , please create more of these type as they draw the most subscribers . Thx for sharing.
MashaAllah, this looks great. Thanks for sharing sis.
Looks delish! I have eaten chicken yassa here in the US and look forward to eating it in Senegambia. We call that a mortar and pestle here in the west. I keep one in my home and use it mainly for crushing herbs and spices. I know a friend that uses one when she makes guacamole. Thanks to both you and Binta for sharing this with us.
Thank you!!❤❤❤
That looked amazing!!! Thank you Binta!

Nice looking dish! I wish I had tried that when I was there,,,
When you come back you can try it!!☺Thank you 💝
Food looks so yummy and delicious but i would have to use cutting board blender to make it a little quicker but of course every country has their culture viewing from Jamaica
Thank you, the chicken yassa looks delicious
Food looks good. Beautiful content.
MashaAllah, looks delicious... I just can't wait to be able to come and live in Gambia, inshaAllah. I have a Gambian friend there and I just can't wait to meet her in person, inshaAllah. Great content!
Yes Inshallah sis!! ❤️ Gambia is awaiting your arrival 🤗.
I notice they do things the hard way, I’m like you quick and simple. I don’t think the food would taste any different if you’re using the same ingredients and seasonings. Each his own.
People are just more comfortable with what they're used to. I tried it the African way and boy did I struggle 😂
Ok i dont know but when u use a grinder and pound in that african thing with the pestle trust me it taste different. Where i an froum we pound cassava leaves but u could also grind it. Pounding gives it another taste i dont know how to explain it
Simply. Delicious. 😋!!!
😊 Happy you enjoyed! Thank you. She did such a great job focusing through my foolishness haha!
Wowru in my language fula. Its good you learning bit by bit its just great I would have given you 100 thumbs up if it was possible
Thank you!! I appreciate your support 🙃.

That food look so good! Yum!!
I don’t use grease when frying meat like chicken or beef. I just season my meat and pan fried it. Meat already has its oil in it.

Ain't got no time for no cutting board! Just something else to wash lol. And reference that garden that you want to start,...take some of those seeds from those peppers and the tops from those onions and throw them behind the house lol!
Quick idea,... more of these food videos will be awesome. You can also throw in some quick ones on learning the language. Just learning different sayings. Just a thought! See you next time!!! And thanks for the video!
Mashallah
Love it.👏

Sister summers lol you need some bowl for cooking n start eating together in one big bowl. Eating together bring the family together n bring your hearts together and become one family n love each other. Yassa look delicious 😋😋
I'll tell Binta!!! She did an amazing job!😊 thanks for watching.
That is African blender n Binta is right cutter take more time. I live in the states but I hate cutting board
Mashallah keep it up
As salaamu Alaikum sister's👋🏽 shukran for posting this Binta this looks soo delicious. It's giving me iftar vibes. What seasonings would you suggest? Because all I know is chicken bullion cubes and some salt. Help a sister out or give me a hint of what the other season taste like. Love from Philly! ❤️❤️💗
The main ingredient for seasoning was a package called "Tak" you can find it online. I'm sorry it took me a while to get caught up with the comments. Thank you for watching ❤❤.
Assalamu alaikum Wa Rhamatullahl Wa Rhamatullahl. Thank you for sharing. I just found your page today. Please keep me videos coming
Alhamdulila, your children will grow up free to be their authentic selves.
Yassa has been and still is my best dish after Thiebou Jeun. Binta has great culinary skills but I think she could have cut down on the oil. Too greasy according to my book. I would like 2 know your take as as health coach on my remarks. Thx again 4 the share.
Watching this again, now I've tasted the original dish i need to try andmake it again, i tried a month back but it was too watery...
Good
❤️❤️🥰
Masha Allah. Gambian chicken Yassa looks good. The Senegalese way is different.
but..but... my knives are sooo sharp! i would bleed all over the onions hahahhahha
Please don't do that sis!!!😂😂
Am waiting for my invitation and we can cook together ❤️ 😃
Yassa in Kiswahili is Mchuzi wa Masalo
❤️
As salaamu alaykum, that was nice. Question: What powder was in the small pouch that she added before the mustard?
Walaykumsalam warahmatullah sis, how are you sis! It's a seasoning called "Tak" if you Google it...it's in a red and yellow package.
@@summersinafrica Ok, I checked. Thanks so much.
I would like to have a bowl of that!! 😄What was the name of the secret packet ingredient that she used? That food looks so delicious ! What was the name of the oil that she used also? Thank you for sharing.🙏🙏💗
The packaging is a seasoning called "Tak". If you google it it's in a red and gold package. The oil is just 100% olive oil. Thank you for watching!!🥰❤
yummy
The food looks tasty 😋 but too much cooking oil for me which means I’ll give it 5 out of 10 😁
The amount of oil used can definitely be altered. The chicken can be cooked without being fried also. Thank you for watching!!
Far too much oil , for anyone, not needed unhealthy, for the children, cut the oil down ,meat and veg can cook down and make gravy . Beautiful family , though xx
@@morelove8307Gambia do walk in most of the time, cooking process of a labour so the oil won't have effect much. But for those with limited exercises oil could be a concern. 😊
Yauru in Kiswahili is Kinu and pestle is Mchi.😅
I'm making it with no chicken though hahahah i gotta try and veganise it xxx
I know it sis!😂❤
My man back in the States had skills in the kitchen. He married a sister from Djibouti. She told him that no matter how much he likes to cook, when they visit her family in Djibouti, he should not go into the kitchen at all. Is it the same there?
Not really, that is something to do with culture. Our prophet pbuh said the best of husband are those who help their wives.
Not necessarily...some of the men cook better than the women 😂.
@@uzyozyoybe1840 hmm maybe its different in gambia but in most traditional african family infromt of in laws the husband cooking and the wife sitting down is not well seen
I have to use the cutting board. I wouldn’t be able to cut food on my lap.
Me too😆
Looks good but more like caldou than Yassa tho..
I'll have to look up caldou to check out the similarities. Thank you for watching!!
Was that dejon mustard or hot mustard
It was Dijon non spicy. Thanks for watching!!
Binta mentioned that she is Fula. What is the most spoken language, Mandingo, Wolof or Fula? Or any other language?
Mandinka is the most common spoken language in Gambia, however, there are many languages spoken here. My friend Binta is Fula and they speak Fula, Mandinka, and wolof...probably a few others as well😂. She's trying to teach me Mandinka, because it's most common.
@@summersinafrica Ok, great. that would be interesting if we good get a few sentences or phrases of greetings in Mandinka. While living in Liberia years and years ago I learned a little Mandingo and it is called there since my first husband was from Conakry Guinea. I was wondering how different is the Mandinka there. Does Binta for example, understand the Mandinka of Conakry Guinea and also the Djoula of Ivory Coast. (Other variations of Mandinka) Just curious.
Fun fact: Fula is currently the wealthiest tribe in west Africa.
@ Ignite Spark. It’s not bro, just stop. Maybe Yoruba tribe because they own Lagos. But that’s about it.
@@askariyamashariki714 I mention W. Africa and you speak of Yoruba tribe that’s only in Nigeria. The Fula are powerful across borders. I’ll stop there.

I know that there are many AAs who have relocated to The Gambia as well as black people from the UK. Do they mostly live in a particular area? What was involved in your family's decision to live where you are? Thanks so much.
Yes, most people that travel here from other places live in Senegambia (tourist area). I live amongst the Africans...it was just my preference. There are options here...many options. Alhamdulilah
@@summersinafrica Thank you.
@@summersinafrica It would be great if you could do a video of each area, the Senegambia area of living and the Living with the Africans areas. Thanks so much.
@Jenneh M Williams You're welcome. Oh, the reason we live in the location we chose is because 1. My grandma lives up the street from me. She moved here from the US a yr prior to my family moving.
2. I wanted my children to live close to the African children who can teach them the languages. I wanted to make sure they learned as much about being African as possible. But of course I pay close attention to any bidiah practices etc. I wanted to learn as much as possible from the local Gambians too, Alhamdulilah. I didn't want to live isolated or just amongst people who are AA like myself.

I do not eat meat. Animals deserve to live just like you
Muslims eat in accordance with what our Creator commands. For example, pork is forbidden. However, chicken and beef are not as long as the animals are humanely slaughtered (in the Islamic way). This little video explains Islamic practices as they relate to food: czcams.com/video/Nc6VpMPsDmk/video.html
Don't dictate to others if we want to eat meat it's none of your concern mind your own business.
