St. Michael's Hill Model Railway Ep.47 - Building & Painting Hard Standing

  • This week on St. Michael’s Hill I use the new fiddle yard to practice some different methods of building concrete hard standing and then go about painting it. Using products from Scale Model Scenery as well as Easy Plaster I come up with 4 or 5 different styles of hard standing that I use as an experiment for my forthcoming layout.

Thanks very much Ewood! I'm pretty pleased with the results - maybe less weathering powder next time though

I used pastels, it's quite effective

Might give that a try - I do have some pastels lying around.

I think the self made looks better, I do like the scale model scenery one but as you said its not a very flexible product. I would have coloured the concrete a little darker but thats just me, yours looks great anyway.
I like how the curved track actually looks like it should be there, not just tacked on, you could say it was a removed point further up the line, I know its your fiddle yard but still looks like it should be there.

Thanks Alex! I agree, the first coat of paint that went on was a little light. Next time I'll start with a slightly darker base but really pleased with the techniques. I agree it all looks pretty good - maybe better than my actual layout! haha

Great job, i have used poly filler myself for hard standing but both look great

I have used polyfilla in the past, I just found this was a little easier to work with, especially when sanding!

The soft plaster looks stunning. 👍 That is a lot of work for a "trial run." What will you do with it all when done?

I'll keep hold of the current layout, but the new one will complete fill the garage, so it'll probably be re-homed either in a spare room of in the loft space.
