- In this episode I revisit the station platforms for my project and show my progress. I go into some detail with the curved platform tops which have required a different technique to that which I have shown previously.
This video will be my last of 2020, and my 35th (I think) since I started uploading seriously.

Looking back on your series, which began as a guide to using CAD for model building construction, it amazes me just how far it has come and how it appears to have developed a life of its own. Never a dull moment and a joy to watch. Thank you for posting, and a belated Happy Christmas to you and yours. Stay well.
Thank you Paul,
I enjoy the creative process of making the videos, and am so pleased that you find them enjoyable. Have a very Happy new year, and my best wishes for 2012. James
I tried this out on my platforms and really happy with the result!! Great video thanks for posting!!
Enjoyed the video you put together. Hope there more to come.
Thanks for the update. Happy new year!
Thank you KJ Jack. Happy new year to you too!
James
I loved the platform surface you created James, it’s certainly given me food for thought as to what I might be able to achieve with my own. Your videos are very informative and inspirational, I look forward to see more of Bexhill in the New Year. So, all the best for the New Year, stay safe and see you in 2021 🥂👌🏻
Thank you so much Paul, the clay is so easy to use and gives a really pleasing finish where a gravel or tarmac surface is required.
As always, thanks for watching, and I'll see you in '21. Have a good one, James
Hi James, this link came up and I'm glad I watched it as I'm in the process of building a layout for a friends 2 boys and I'm going to give this a try. Well done and keep up the good work...Loved the tranquil music as well...
Thank you Anthony, I'm pleased you enjoyed the video.
All the best,
James
Great tutorial, this is just what I was looking for, having learnt about using DAS clay for platform surfaces in writing. I'll be trying this out on my own layout soon.
Thank you Ian, it really is great stuff. I find it useful for all sorts of jobs. Sets rock hard too which can be great for drilling and fixing in to .
Happy new year James.
I like the brush technique on the Das clay, something I will try for myself !
Thanks for sharing your progress. see you next year!
Thank you very much. I'm now getting to the point whereby I can do lots more scenic stuff, so expect to see me using it quite a lot over the coming months.
Take care,
James
Great idea with the clay. Might be able to use it in maintenance buildings to put between the rails on the track to mimick hard standing. Also good for yards doing the same thing. Having watched some videos where the inside of the track has been filled in, I don't like card, plasticard, polyfilla etc. Clay would do the job and it doesn't look messy. Your station is looking fab.
Happy New Year James -The platforms are a masterpiece and so is the station and I really like the photo at the end that gave a great view of all the little details. As a man who does not consider yourself Arty the scenic work is very good indeed especially the ballasting ( I am envious ) .
Looking forward to what comes next .
Have a safe 2021...................Cheers Kev
Thanks Kev, I'm pleased you like the progress. Take care, James
Hi James, another informative video, really like the use of DAS clay that has worked really well. Happy New Year James, John
Hi John, I think it's great stuff, really good for all sorts of things, and the best bit is that it doesn't seem to shrink as it dries. It takes paint really nicely too.
Happy New Year to you too, have a good one!
James
Looks great, well done!
Thank you Peter, it's slowly getting there. :)
James
Hi James I am new subscriber to your channel and I wanted to say how very pleased I am to have discovered your channel and see your progress you kindly share.
Your concepts of modelling are truly inspiring and your journey so far has been really marvellous.
You are an incredibly talented man and how you model, research and methods of problem solving are nothing less than brilliant.
I am very much looking forward to following more of your progress with Bexhill West and other delightful projects that come along.
Many thanks to you, Happy New Year and keep safe & well 😉👍
Kindest regards Dan 😊🙏
Hi Dan, thank you so much for taking the time to write such a kind comment. I do try to think through what I do, and present my ideas in such a way as they might add something to the collective CZcams wisdom. But they are just that, ideas, but I do hope they form some food for thought as people mull-over their own projects.
I’m really pleased you have been finding the videos interesting, there’s plenty more to come, which I hope you will find interesting too.
Thanks for the sub, it’s great to have you onboard.
My best wishes,
James
Coming together strong. Great work my friend
Thank you, that's very kind. Can't wait to get it to the point whereby I can start to take some photographs. I shall of course be following your channel for inspiration. In fact, to any others who may read this, check-out Nick's channel. It's brilliant! :)
All the best,
James
What an excellent Tutorial, thank you
Thank you Peter, I'm pleased you found it useful.
Hi just discovered your channel, some great video tutorials, just subscribed. Cheers Gary
Thanks, Gary. Just checked your channel and love the area you are modelling. We had a lovely train ride that way last year. Stunning part of the world. Best wishes, James.
Yes a great layout and station coming on. I have subbed and thumbs up. Regards Alan at "Buckland Junction"
Thank you Alan, I'm pleased you have enjoyed seeing my progress. And thank you for the sub, much appreciated.
My best wishes, James
Very informative. Thks for sharing.

Excellent job. Regards Greg
Thank you Greg, that's very kind.
James
The curved platform surface is looking good.
Looks like a similar technique to that used by a Swedish CZcamsr i follow called marklinofsweden. He has some fantastic guides to getting realistic finishes. He uses this technique for cobbled streets too, with a cobble roller sold for ho scale. One for oo could work quite well i reckon.
Hey James. Another quality and ducational video. It was my intention to wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, but snail mail is particularly bad this year. I will be sending you some relevant info in the next week or so but, as I said ain an earlier email, I am in no rush not yet anyway. Getting used to my new toy and the benefits it has given. So, on that basis, I wish you and yours a celebratory festive season and good health for 2021. Take care, Mike
Hi Mike, I'll get an email to you ion the next couple of days. As usual I've been really busy. :)
I wish you and your family all the very best for the New Year.
Take care,
James
@@BexhillWest 👍
I must say I admire you for having the courage to tackle the challenge of modelling a real place! A fascinating look at your technique of modelling a platform surface with DAS clay. I think the final step with the paintbrush had not been necesary. However, when you sand it down, it should create a good worn tarmac effect! The focus stack is an interestnig technique. Perhaps photograph the model in bright sunlight in June to reduce the depth of field and the number of images necessary? Thanks for uploading.
Thank you Allen, in my case the platform tops will be getting a top dressing to represent gravel. I was simply showing the technique asa suggestion for others to whom it might me new. As for my photographs skills, I’m still learning. This project was conceived as a focus for me to practice the skills with. I hope to have many hours learning the processes once it is completed. So all suggestions as to how I might improve are most welcome. I’ll aim for a better daylight set-up in my next shoot. Thanks for the tip. All the best, James
@@BexhillWest The f-stop determines the depth of field. In bright sunlight, the f-stop can be f-22, but on a dull day, the iris needs to be open much wider - maybe f8. The smaller the aperture, the greater the depth of field can be. A pinhole camera has an infinite depth of field without distortion but requires a time exposure which would not be a problem photographing your 4mm version of Bexhill West! See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinhole_camera#:~:text=A%20pinhole%20camera%20is%20a,as%20the%20camera%20obscura%20effect.
Very impressive work, I am still undecided how to do my platforms or what medium to use...Simon
Hi Simon, this technique would also work with PECO platform sides, and a bit of MDF as a sub-base. I hope the video was useful, and gave you some ideas. Good luck with your platforms when you get started.
Thanks for watching,
James
Actually laughed out loud when you said you're "not good at artistic-y things" - you do yourself too little credit! These platforms are absolutely masterful - it's criminal to hide them under a canopy actually.
Getting the impression every railway modelling club ought to get access to a laser cutter to make nice things from thin MDF…
That is very kind of you to say! But really, I'm not good at artistc-y things....I can paint well and get a great finish where one colour is required, but when it comes to colour theory and mixing colours, I'm afraid I'm hopeless. I'm more of an engineer than an artisan. :)
Excuse the typo below! It should read not had the time yet to look at your other videos!
Hi. I’ve just come across your marvellous model video! Apologies for not letting along the time yet to watch the others but whose platform did you use? It looks like it’s a laser cut version! Great model!
Thank you Phil, I'm pleased that you enjoyed the video.
Your platforms are looking very well.
Subscribe arrow as a product placment hidden at the end of the video 😏.
Thank you Lass, and Happy New Year.
James
Hi again, can I ask where you bought that colour of DAS Clay from?
Hi Simon, I got this pack from 'The Works'. It was £4. It is the 'stone' colour.
Hope that helps,
James
Hello
Hello Penny. :)
