  • In this tutorial, I'll explain how to use FabFilter Pro Q 3 EQ plugin from Fabfilter. This is by far my all-time favorite EQ plugin.Fabfilter Pro Q 3 has all the essential features you need in a modern EQ. There are not a lot of tutorials on how to use Fabfilter Pro Q 3 so in this video I'll go over all the features and show you how to use it.
    There's quite a lot to over here. Fabfilter Pro Q3 is packed with useful features, ranging from dynamic EQ to full Dolby surround support, 24 EQ bands, external spectrum visualization from other FabFilter Pro-q 3 EQ's (on other mixer tracks), mid/side, left/right processing, and much more.
    The best thing about Fabfilter Pro Q 3 is that it's very quick and easy to use. As a music producer, having a fast workflow is key. If you're looking for the best EQ plugin for music production, then FabFilter Pro q 3 is a strong contender indeed! This is actually my go-to EQ plugin, and I use it in all my projects. Many wonder what's the best EQ for mastering, the best EQ for vocals, and so on, and my answer is always the same: Fabfilter pro q 3 can be used for just about everything. It's just as good for mastering as it is for vocals, guitars, synths, drums, and so on. There really isn't any "best" EQ for different things. They all basically work the same way. The main difference is the features they offer, and their ease of use.

      Glad you liked the video! There are EQ's out there with similar capabilities, and some are considered to be "based on" the pro Q as well, but I just always loved how streamlined and fast the workflow is in this EQ, so I haven't really seen the need to move to anything else. I think this is a huge reason why you'll tend to see this plugin being used by countless professionals all over the world.
      All the fabfilter stuff in general is great and if you can get the bundle then it'll be well worth it. I stopped buying waves plugins etc a long time ago, and now I mainly just use the fabfitler stuff.

    Thanks for sharing useful information :) What do you think about Kirchoff EQ?

    • @FireWalkMusic
      @FireWalkMusic  Před 2 lety

      You're welcome! The Kirchoff EQ is also very good. Many tend to call it a Fabfilter Pro Q 3 Clone. The GUI is undoubtedly inspired by Fabfilter Pro Q. It also has tons of great features and I often see people arguing which one of these two is the "best". I think that question is a bit flawed though. It's kind of like asking what DAW is the best? And there's no good answer to that either, because the answer itself is flawed. The best daw isn't necessarily the one with the most features, because that means nothing if you don't need those features. The question should be: What's the best DAW for YOU? It's the same with any kind of plugin in my opinion. The best one is usually the one that offers you the fastest workflow, allowing you to do exactly what you want to do as quickly as possible.
      I think you should use whatever feels natural to you. I've been using Pro-Q since version one, and even though I've tried tons of EQ's (As a CZcamsr I get sent a lot of plugins for free to test out), I always find myself coming back to Pro-Q 3. I just find that it's a great fit for my particular workflow, and it allows me to work really fast. Everything I need is laid out in such a way that the most important features that I commonly use are easily accessible.
      To me, a fast workflow is the very key to finishing tracks. You need to get the melodic ideas and such down quickly before you get ear fatigue, so I prefer plugins that allow me to do adjustments very quickly and easily.
      I think you should use whatever EQ "clicks" best with your preferred workflow. It's just like with a DAW itself, some work faster in Ableton, Some work faster in FL Studio, and some work faster in Logic. People are different and it also depends on what features you use the most and so on. If you're Hans Zimmer for example then you'd probably prefer something that allows you quick access to surround controls, while a typical EDM producer will benefit more from having quick access to other controls. Use whatever you're comfortable with. If you feel like the EQ you're using is working with you and never against you, then stick with it. That's the most important thing. :)

    Do you have any tips on using tonal balance 2? I've just bought it and I'm unsure how to get the lines to go inside the green areas :P

    • @FireWalkMusic
      @FireWalkMusic  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi, the tonal balance control will show you an estimation, or an "average" of commercial tracks based on hundreds of tracks in any given genre that you can select up top. For example EDM. The greenish area is representing the averages, and the white line represents the energy in your track in the various bands. You typically want it to be within that region, but not always. For example, in some trance tracks for example, where you have a very powerful saw synth up top, perhaps paired with a female vocal, it can make it show up as too energetic in the high end, and when that happens the low-end will often end up showing week too, while in reality, it's exactly where it needs to be. Plugins like this can be a great tool for people who mix on headphones, or a typical bedroom producer who is mixing in a less than ideal monitoring environment because it gives you an indication of where you need to be.
      It must be taken with a grain of salt though. It's not almighty and it can be misleading in some cases.
      Use it as a guide, but ultimately, trust your ears. I see people placing too much faith in these plugins, making their leads sounds too far back in the mix for example, just because they want everything to be within the lines.
      If you're making a trance track for example or making a track that's fairly similar to something else within a specific genre, it can be beneficial to import a reference track instead and use that as a guide for the tonality instead of the available genres up top, which are quite generic.

    • @FireWalkMusic
      @FireWalkMusic  Před 2 lety +1

      Oh, and one more thing: I recommend using the tonal balance on the last FX slot on your Master channel, or on the "current" track. That way you can use both on the entire track itself, but also on individual channels. I have a video showing how useful this can be here: czcams.com/video/0zcZum7BPeM/video.html

      Parametric EQ2 is a good EQ but I usually only use it for basic editing, if i need to apply some quick adjustments to roll off the lows on a ride for example, things like that. For anything more advanced I always end up using the Pro Q 3. It offers more flexibility, and I have a much faster workflow in it. I also think it sounds better overall, especially when you boost the highs for example, it just sounds much more natural and not so harsh.
      That said, use whatever you're comfortable with. There's no point in buying an expensive EQ if you don't need any of the unique features it offers. Workflow is key. The best plugin is usually the one that allows you the fastest workflow possible, while still allowing you to do exactly what you need to do. :)

      My opinion is that Kirchhoff EQ is superior in many ways. It has multiple dynamics controls that Fab filter doesn’t. Personally I can’t justify the $300 spend for small sound improvements and Fab filter is very good. So I will wait for other companies to catch up with Kirchhoff-EQ. I would probably spend $150 for Kirchhoff but not $300.
