The open ended metal buckle looks very similar to my grandmothers book strap which they used to carrybooks. The metal piece was the handle

More great shed Archaeology Chris, great finds, a real bit of history there, the split twin buckled belt/strap is a mystery, hopefully someone will recognise it and enlighten us all ! Considering the condition of the case, the condition of the other leather items is amazing - I guess the case did do it's job in protecting the contents for at least some time !

The thin belt with 1915 date, the bottom word is WALSALL. Walsall in England was the centre of the leather industry back then, lots of leather goods especially saddlery.

Yeah, some shed dust would be rather toxic and I'm normally pretty careful - especially sweeping them out! I have the case at the shop today with a "free" tag - hopefully someone sees some value there..

A comment from someone who knows nothing about this gear: given that there are 4 gaiters, could they be for a horse? They look pretty small for legs of any of the big strapping men in my family. At any rate, a very interesting find. I’m glad you could bring that leather back to life.
Thanks Elaine. They expand a fair way, and then tightened with the straps. Judging on how small the belt was on me - I'm assuming the original owner wasn't a big strapping lad!

Given how much the military markings add to old leather... it makes me wonder how much a stamp would cost and how we could tell the difference?
I guess a stamp would be easy to make Martin, but it would be hard to fool a collector as the patina of the stamped leather just wouldn't be the same!
The strap with two buckles. Could it be for a sword sheath? IE goes over the shoulder and under a belt?

I was thinking the same. It's amazing what can be done with old leather.
Some of the leather could certainly be brought back to life, but there were BIG holes and the hinge/base area was nearly cracked right through. It wouldn't have been worth the effort! Hopefully someone can use the hardware though..
@@TheUltimateRecycler I was watching Susie Dent on the Repair Shop UK transforming some pretty broken and damaged leather items. Maybe there is a leather worker out there who sees the value in this weather beaten old bag
