  • (Find this and more at www.williamzeitler.com) Composer and musician William Zeitler performs his original 'Our Last Transit of Venus' for Glass Armonica and Orchestra. William composed the piece especially for the occasion of the Transit of Venus 2012.
    Interesting to note is that the Glass Armonica was invented by Benjamin Franklin in 1761 which was also a year of a Transit of Venus!

    Since discovering it recently, the glass armonica has quickly become one of my favorite instruments, along with the harpsichord, the mandolin, the violin, the cello, the celesta & the _koto._ This is a beautiful piece that showcases the celestial sound of the armonica perfectly.❤️

    I cannot believe that there were instruments that could create such ethereal sounds before synthesizers existed.

    • @henkkahenrik4183
      @henkkahenrik4183 Před 6 lety

      You can produce same sound with bunch of wineglasses and water. It's simple sience. Glass resonates at specific wavelength and produces sound. Size of glass and amount of water affect on resonance, causing different sounds. Even kids often do this at certain age without knowing, and end up noticing the sound. I was about 7 when i noticed resonance of glass, while playing around with wineglasses. If you drag your finger along the edge of wineglass with water, you can produce similar sound. You should put some water to the edge of glass as well, and/or in ur finger. This helps it to resonate better. Also the reason why wineglass and glass armonica works better than average glass is the bowl shape, that resonates better.

      Lol as a fellow prog metal fan i can’t be that sarcastic to you, it’s an acoustic instrument with metal tines that you pluck with your fingers, it sounds really cool, you should check videos on it

      @Constantinos CHRISTODOULAKIS My cousin plays the Glass Armonica, so it has a chance I guess. But he is like a music professor n shit in the classical industry so not really with any influence in metal sadly. But yeah, any of these antithetical instruments are possible I guess either way, even if not currently present

      ObiWanShinobi1, to his credit Franklin actually invented things that were made in his lifetime, and made very profitably too. Da Vinci almost certainly had a greater intellect than Franklin, which is not to demean Franklin's at all. However, Da Vinci wasn't a very organized or practical person, and few of any of Da Vinci's inventions were ever made, while Franklin's were and still are.

    This instrument is rumored to make people insane when listening to it for large quantities of time. I myself do not know if this is true, but the idea behind that is that the glass harmonica speaks at a range humans don't hear especially well, which makes it sound like the sound is coming from everywhere and nowhere all at once.

      And thats why they were banned in the first place. Players used to lick their fingers to add resonance, got lead poisoning which either drugged them or knocked them out, sometimes even killed them, and of course people from 18th century thought that the instrument summoned demons and drove people insane, and banned it instead of looking for the cause... -_-'''
