  • In a newly released "morning worship" video, Governing Body member Geoffrey Jackson dips into his family history to remind Jehovah's Witnesses of the need to keep the "belt of truth" tight when encountering critics.

I was brought up as a JW and later disfellowshipped as a wicked homosexual...but one thing has always stuck in my memory. It must have been around the early 1970s and at a circuit assembly, the circuit overseer was giving a talk from the platform and clearly stated: " If Armageddon has not come by December 31st 1975, we know we have not got the truth!"

      Philip Black,
You were disfellowshipped for being a "wicked homosexual". That's just too bad for the JWs, because the wicked homosexuals are the most fun kind of homosexuals to be around. I wonder if that Circuit Overseer who claimed at that Circuit Assembly in the 1970s, that if Armageddon didn't occur by December 31st, 1975, then that meant the JWs didn't have the truth -- if he is still alive, is he still a Witness? If so, isn't he supposed to be stoned with rocks for making a false prediction? Not that I want anyone getting hurt of course, but isn't that is what is supposed to happen to false prophets according to the Old Testament?

My own favourite book was "You can Live Forever" However, the book woke me up when "this generation..." exposed their lies in the late eighties after the death of all those that witnessed 1914. Well back when 911 happened and everyone was convinced that was leading to Armageddon and my mom told me I was going to die but she had made peace with it because she had waited so long for paradise and she was ready so she was going to be faithful without me. That scared the shit out of me at 19 and I had never seen anything so bad hit close to home so I was convinced it must be bivle prophecy coming true. Sadly the things that happened in the 17 years after that were so bad that it convinced me it couldn't be true and that it was just people's fear being played upon and there were too many things wrong with the organization and the Bible itself and too many unanswered prayers that it convinced me it wasn't. I can't just go back and cling to something that was a fear tactic to begin with and convince myself of a lie. Try again Geoffrey.

What drew me to the religion to begin with was the threat of Armageddon coming in 1975. Of course, when it didn't come, I was already hooked into the cult, so it took another 20 years to escape. So I hope the J-Dubs actually do this exercise - it would only help them wake up.

Geoffrey Jackson presupposes the claims of the Bible are "true", ignoring all other religious texts, then asserts that if one studies the Bible that they're realize that being punished by God to burn in a lake of fire for all eternity in the afterlife is a "false doctrine". Tell that to all the people who've read the Bible that have become fundamentalist Christians and have come to embrace the doctrine of Hell as a literal lake of fire and brimstone. Do I think the Bible promotes this concept? From what I know of Biblical scholarship, I would say no. However, I'm an atheist, so I don't believe in any of it. I don't care if someone believes in eternal Hellfire as a punishment that is bestowed upon one for their unapologetic "sins" or not. I have no reason to believe that any of it is true.
If one can understand the meanings of the Bible just from reading it themselves, then why would anyone have to become a Jehovah's Witness, Geoffrey Jackson? Also, why should I care what the Bible says or doesn't say about anything, even if the claims of the text were true? At the end of the day, those Biblical authors' statements are just their opinions, which ones has to evaluate to see whether or not they agree with those opinions or ideas. At the end of the day, God's pronouncements would still be just his opinion, and I'd have to evaluate his opinions to see whether or not I think they're logical, reasonable or moral.
You then claim, Geoffrey, that a Witness should accept that the Watchtower Society has the "truth", and no further questioning is needed. I thought the truth could stand up to scrutiny. If your theological claims re true, then why can't they be questioned? What are you afraid of? Did you not claim that it would be "presumptuous" to assume that only the Governing Body can speak for God out of all the religious leaders in the world at the Australian Royal Commission? So technically, you lied in court. Is that not a "sin" according to Christian theology, or is lying only a "sin" when you decide that it's a "sin"?

Faiths ike Hinduism that have multiple avatars of the supreme being, are open to accept other avatars such as Jesus or Muhammad.

I would say that that makes a lie of Jesus’ words when he said ‘the generation will be no means pass away.’ They can jump around all they want with a ‘day for a year’ but even their own new overlapping generations doesn’t give them hundreds of years to play with. It’s the simplest and most obvious rebuttal of their position. You can’t have it ‘just around the corner’ while also suggesting there is some poetic licence with Jesus own words.
