Applause for your excellent points. I rarely watch television talking sports-heads because they seem to be in the entertainment industry, rarely discussing valid relevant sports analysis. I'm an old man, old enough that when I was young, I learned the 1st acknowledged NFL MVP was center Mel Hein. More than one institution recognized MVP and they often differed. One year an institution said offensive tackle Lou Groza was MVP. Then a long series of backs received the award including Jim Taylor, Paul Hornung, and Jim Brown. I hadn't paid enough attention to realize it had become considered an award for quarterbacks. I was paying attention to American Football League MVPs in the 1960s. Six of the ten were non-quarterbacks: two wide receivers (Alworth, Cappelletti), three fullbacks (Gilchrist, Lowe, Nance), and one halfback (Haynes). The other four were three quarterbacks: Blanda, Namath, and Lamonica twice. Personally, in 1968 I would have voted the MVP for Ed Budde, left guard for the Kansas City Chiefs.
Purdy is just average against decent teams. Awards are never fair and trying to quantify who the most important player was out of 1700 is silly unless you go strictly by stats. But stats lie too so awards are just dumb. celebrating people who are celebrated already
The fans are too blame, all people talk about are wins/rings. Nothing else matters. The fans ate up the Jordan 6 rings argument, and now all they can see is ringe. 0 nuance
Fully agree and it's crazy I hate ring counting it also robs players current/former for their greatness and takes away from their play. When you witness greatness or awesome play "everyone is like not my goat" it's so tasteless
I mean Josh Allen had the number 1 defense a good receiving core and everything in 2021 just like Lamar had in 2023 but I guess the bills are cursed and we will never win a championship. 13 seconds still haunts me to this day.
Great video! I think the Ravens suffered significant injuries on offence during the season. Dobbins in the pre-season, Andrews mid-season, Lamar was relying on unproven rookies and a washed OBJ to produce on O, meanwhile Purdy had a healthy CMC, Aiyuk, Deebo, and Kittle for the majority of the season. Although the stats push the game manager narrative for both of them, the circumstances are definitely different imo. I’m with you on pushing a non-QB MVP tho, Garrett should have been in the convo more that defense carried Flacco to the wild card come on
Very good points! If voters ever vocalized that pov regarding injuries it would be much more palatable - but yes, the larger issue is still the fact that it was even close to becoming a unanimous vote - Go Warriors!!!
You are missing a key element. The nfl is woke. Black quarterbacks didn't used to exist and are still rare. I can almost guarantee you if Jackson had lost the mvp voting, there would be all kinds of people claiming racism.
Not mentioning Dak's name once in this video is insane. The most passing TDs, tied for most total TDs, was top 5 in every meaningful passing stat and his team was the second seed. Cry about his playoffs all you want but MVP is a regular season award.
I agree he should be in the conversation I only left him out because I was analyzing the main narrative of Purdy vs Lamar, however he lost to Dobbs, Purdy (bad), Hurts, Allen, Tua. He kinda shrunk in very big moments especially when it counted at the end of the season
@@joericottone it's fair to say that about Dak but then you have to do the same for Lamar, he was great against good teams. He was 10-3 against teams with a winning record and 9 of those games he won by 14+ (including the 49ers) which is an NFL record.
Completely agree, and that's the point I'm making in this video - not Lamar, nor Purdy, nor Dak dominated to a point that would justify a unanimous MVP or anything close to that point, they were all very similar in terms of individual performances@@talam563
I could not believe lamar won, if we wanna give it to a qb and go off stats it would have been allen or dak both had better productions then lamar. If we wanna go off of who if you took off the team the team wouldnt have been anywhere close to where they were then it would be mahomes. But in my eyes it had to be mccaffery
The ravens edge 49ers defense but I think what made the difference was Brock plays his role very well for 49ers offense but when it comes to Ravens Lamar kinda really is the offense.
@@joericottone Agree agree. Of course with KC, the entire defense, all 11 guys, could be considered MVP too. And Harrison Butker too. 4 Super Bowl FGs. And 2 or 3 or 4 each in the Bills and Ravens games too. He was the kicking MAN.
Lamar Jackson had no thousand yard rusher or receiver, the top running back on the ravens was Gus Edwards, the best receiver was a rookie, Mark Andrews got hurt, he played far and away the hardest schedule in the NFL (9 games against teams that made the playoffs). Yes the Ravens had great coaching, yes the Ravens had a great defense, but the Jets also have a great defense, and without a quarterback what did it do for them?
You are 100% right about Lamar not being the MVP. I personally believe he shouldn’t have been a candidate. He is the first MVP that wasn’t top 10 in yards or touchdowns, but he won damn near unanimously? You could’ve given it to Purdy, Allen or even Dak Prescott and it would’ve made more sense. McCaffrey, Tyreek, CeeDee Lamb was unbelievable and when you look at defense, you could go with Garrett or TJ. He shouldn’t have finished with a single vote.
Bro while your consternation is well-founded, the MVP is not an objective award. Perception plays a great part in it. Meausrables mean less than we think. I do wish the format were changed to honor more players (e.g QB cannot win OPOY, MVP becomes Most Outstanding Player, individual position group awards -like all-pro but with trophies), but this is literally the same award that the AP gave to a kicker in the 70s….how seriously can you take it
very well done video, glad someone said it. I was really surprised CMC didn't get more recognition, and Josh Allen totally could've gotten the MVP too. A testament to how much sports media just parrots a narrative
Absolutely love the channel. So glad I found it and can watch it grow. Well done thought out videos, well executed, not pushed opinions and the ones you do have are well thought out and supported. Don’t change, the success is coming your way
As a 49er fan I have two thoughts. 1. CMC should’ve been the MVP. He stood out positional more than anyone else. Only QBs had more than 20 tds. 2. You can argue a ton of QBs are system QBs. Josh Allen has Stef on diggs, Dak Prescott has CeeDee, Justin Herbert had Allen and Williams, Hurts has Smith, Brown, and a brick wall of an oline. None of these are system QBs, and when you look at Purdys film, he looks good. He can make almost every necessary throw, he just gets to throw to a very talented group. 33 TDs in 16 games is very good, and some elite people who also have play makes can’t get there.
Making this comment before I hear your reasons, just want to tell you I am subscribing because you had courage to do this! Whether I agree or not, I'm in for a guy who challenges my conventional thinking.
If you watch first take yesterday. Stephen A smith said he doesn't think lamar would win a superbowl if he and mahomes switched team's. Talk about doubling down. These analysts are really stupid 😒
The amount of time Lamar sat out in the 4th due to blowing out teams so bad was over a game, not including sitting out the entire last game. On top of that they rushed for the most yards. Lamar is not going to have the most passing yards
The majority of sports media talking heads like Stephen A. are actually incredibly unintelligent when it comes to taking stances backed by metrics or unbiased reason. No player should ever be unanimous MVP when they aren’t leading in any major statistical category for their position. McCaffrey or Hill should have gotten the nod this year; anything else is asinine.
CMC should have won based on the fact that his presence is making BP look like Montana when he's just better than average. Good QB but not great. And Miles Garrett over TJ Watt for defensive player? That's probably the worst snub of all.
The thing with the Lamar MVP is that it was his first year in a non college style system which they did for Lamar his first couple of years. This was a tradition style offense and when his favorite option mark Andrew’s went down and Lamar could still do normal qb things and the won it made it seem like Lamar had finally become a true qb. Now again these narratives should not have made him the mvp but they had to because it was a feel good story. Personally Lamar should have won comeback player of the year but nobody wants to go there
Ngl Lamar is also one of the biggest media darlings in the NFL. They been having his back to the fullest ever since he was in a contract dispute with the Ravens. Constantly bashing the Ravens for not getting him signed and bashing other teams for not immediately trading their future for him.
He carries himself well publicly though, and that goes a long way - it's what people don't understand when I'm critical about Kyler Murray - K1 makes himself an enemy by the way he communicates, you could say the same thing as each other, but the packaging matters, and Lamar knows how to communicate well
Yes - most of the greats just happen to be more fortunate because of coaching and surrounding talent. However, when it comes to the game within the game (audibling at the line, identifying coverages etc.) that's where things change and separate the great from good
@@joericottone yeah but other QBs for example using AROD he is known for his Ball Placement being able to put the ball in some of the Tuffest spots and won back 2 back MVPs
We wouldn’t have been the best team in the league without Lamar. He’s the most valuable player on the best team in the league. It’s not hard to understand
I'll argue it. Purdy still should have been the MVP. He's the only QB with an ANY/A over 9.00 that has not won the award. Personnel be damned. And 2022 Justin Fields did, in fact, get one MVP vote. One more than Russell Wilson has received his entire career.
And why is that? I said Purdy also didn’t necessarily deserve it - Also, the main point of the video isn’t that Lamar shouldn’t have won, it’s that he shouldn’t have been close to winning it unanimously. I’ve already made videos about this topic in the past (when Aaron Rodgers won in ‘14
Ngl calling the ravens the most complete team is definitely a big stretch, offensively at least. If you look at the roster for the chiefs and ravens offensively; I can’t find much to separate them honestly. Rookie and unproven WRs, Kelce/Mark/Likely, Pacheco/Gus, average at best O lines. The ravens definitely were not as complete offensively like the 49ers, Rams, Lions, Eagles, Bengals, the list really can go on
When you run the ball as much as Jackson does in his offense, you’re not going to rack up the most dominant passing stats. And you said it yourself - 85 of LJ’s runs were designed, in turn, meaning his lack of passing production was a product of the coach’s decision to heavily utilize him as a runner. You couple this with all of the games he sat in the 4th qtr or just didn’t play at all, his numbers were not as bad as it seems. We can’t sit here and act as if having Flowers, Edwards, Andrews, Likely, and Agholor is the equivalent of having Aiyuk, McCaffrey, Samuel, Kittle, and Jennings. Purdy had a bit more room to be a “game manager” considering the amount of talent on the field with him. In the SF-BAL game, only one QB was rattled by the others’ great defense. It makes for good convo, but to talk Lamar’s offensive supporting cast up to the level of a SF is being a little disingenuous. I will say that you’ve convinced me that the race should’ve been closer, though.
You make good points! the main point of this video is built around the idea that he should have been unanimous is ludicrous more than anything. I appreciate the thoughtful comment!!
This is the age of the 'virtue signal/DEI' MVP. If Lamar Jackson was some white guy, Stephen A. Smith would be calling him out every night, screaming that "he's the problem", "It's clear he's can't get it done"...but with the power of BLACK PRIVILEGE, the narrative FLIPS 180 degrees. Now, it's excuses, it's everyone else's fault, the coaches are holding him back, he's clearly "top 5" and on and on it goes. His FIRST MVP was a joke but again, we know what the AGENDA is, we see it coming from the TOP of the NFL and anyone that calls it out is called names. Drew Brees and Russell Wilson never got an MVP, so, it's clearly not the 'bench mark' it used to be. When Jackson tried to go to free agency, the market spoke VERY loudly about his actual value and ceiling/potential, outside of the DEI crowd, coaches and owners know he's above average but his skill will decline rapidly VERY soon, like the "dual threat" QB's, they never manifest into great passers, they get slower and get sacked more until they're eventually out of the league.
The issue is if lamar had cmc deebo kittle and aiyuk that team goes 16-0. He does also have a great defense and has a great line but a way worse wr core
The worst mvp period. How. An he be mvp when he didn’t lead in any passing categories? Lmfao the league is a joke, and they didn’t want to give it to somebody else since they’d say it’s racist just because he’s black
Its a popularity contest. And because the bills were so inconsistent, and with allen turnovers cost him the award. I love lamar but the defense was the story 2023 season and he just benefits from it. I think dax could of won also.
I understand that it is annoying that it is an best qb award at this point, but they are so much more valuable to teams than other positions, thats why they get these huge contracts. I mean look at mahomes cap hit, nobody would give that money to hill or cmc
@@joericottone its hill, and you are right there are good arguments to give the mvp award to a non qb, maybe the nfl should do some changes in the system. But in my personal opinion hill being more valuable than tua is a big reason why I never seen them as serious contender for the superbowl title. Of course there are exeptions but in the end it often comes down to the quarterbacks and in the regular season its the same thing
I always thought MVP should go to the player who impacts his team the most. Because of that I thought Allen or Stroud or even Falco made a bigger difference. Besides, there are plenty of other player positions who also make huge contributions to their teams & ought to be considered.
Thank you!! He wasn't even in the top 10 in some qb categories. All the analytics were against him. I would have voted for CMC. If we were doing a QB, i would pick Allen, the person who led the league in yards and touchdowns and the second lowest turnover worthy play rate of playoff QBs.
To be fair. Lamar is a dual threat, so isolating his passing stats or rushing stats and using that as a justification isn’t very fair. With that being said, I do not believe he was the MVP.
Neither Lamar or Purdy should Have gotten the MVP. Dak Prescott deserved the MVP and 1st team all pro. And I fucking despise the Cowboys. But put all three of their numbers down beside each other and you will See what I’m talking about.
Sounds pretty *OXYMORONIC* to me. Lamar was the catalyst to a 13-4 record. Whereas Tyrod Taylor was 8-8 leading the Bills in '15. Plus, Lamar *DOMINATED* against the other MVP candidates. And, was barely even in a deficit all season in *HISTORICAL* fashion. 1 idiot away (Aaron Schatz) from being the first 2x unanimous MVP ever. (99 out of 100 votes) The NFL literally allowed 'em to single-handedly revise history pickin' Josh Allen who led the league in turnovers. Moreover, almost didn't even make the playoffs 'til the Bills changed OC's and ran the ball more w/ James Cook. Meanwhile; Lamar led the Ravens #1 rushing attack again; and hasn't had a 1,000 rusher since RB Mark Ingram (1,018) in '19 unless it was himself.
@@joericottone Eh the only games you can blame him on is the SF where he threw 3 picks and the Arizona game where he failed to dismantle that mediocre defense. Besides that his defense failed him with one stop in Miami game, the defense crumbled against the Bills in the exact same way with Green Bay and the first Eagles game was just a shootout. To your videos point defense is super important to the MVP award even though most of the candidates aren’t even defensive players, Like the most important game to the MVP race was Ravens vs 49ers, did Lamar make Purdy throw 4 interceptions? no of course not but in the MVP narrative it made Lamar look like he dismantled the SF defense when in reality he just thrived of those turnovers his defense gave him. The reason why I bring this up is because the opposite is used for Dak, when his defense just absolutely falls apart like in Buffalo it’s treated like he was the main reason they lost that game.
His receiving corps was underwhelming , and you are stretching too hard to make his rushing mean nothing. I admit this was a weaker MVP finalist class. It’s like when Crash won the Oscar. Ok then.

Its a movement id get behind!
@@joericottoneThis should be getting lots of attention until non-offensive skill players actually get fair consideration.
Thanks so much Robert, really appreciate that and appreciate the thoughtful comment!!
The MVP being a QB award is such media manipulation
facts
Wins are extremely overrated in terms of MVP votes for QBs, Lamar had a great year but Josh Allen had an even better year.
I think so too
That was an unreal video
Thanks so much!
Purdy is just average against decent teams. Awards are never fair and trying to quantify who the most important player was out of 1700 is silly unless you go strictly by stats. But stats lie too so awards are just dumb. celebrating people who are celebrated already
interesting take!
The fans are too blame, all people talk about are wins/rings. Nothing else matters. The fans ate up the Jordan 6 rings argument, and now all they can see is ringe. 0 nuance
good points! thanks for watching!
F A X X
Fully agree and it's crazy I hate ring counting it also robs players current/former for their greatness and takes away from their play. When you witness greatness or awesome play "everyone is like not my goat" it's so tasteless
@@bosExpert1 Tasteless...AND unoriginal
Absolutely nailed it!
Thank you my man!!
If Josh Allen played for the Ravens… they’d have gone 15-2 or something. And cruised to a Super Bowl blowout victory over the 49ers.
I could see it
I mean Josh Allen had the number 1 defense a good receiving core and everything in 2021 just like Lamar had in 2023 but I guess the bills are cursed and we will never win a championship. 13 seconds still haunts me to this day.
Josh Allen would throw game away in the clutch even if he has a good defense
Josh Allen is a glorified Phillip rivers
@@Goatoftrio it was only in the one time against the Vikings that it
Great video!
But in my eyes it had to be mccaffery
good points!
Thank you bro I’m ravens fan but the Lamar glazing is ridiculous
If the point of the season is to win the superbowl. Why do we have a trophy for regular season performance?!
I agree
The ravens edge 49ers defense but I think what made the difference was Brock plays his role very well for 49ers offense but when it comes to Ravens Lamar kinda really is the offense.
Allen is the real MVP
your profile pic makes me think you might be a tad biased
The MVP should include the postseason. If so, Mahomes is the MVP and it isn't even close.
I agree
@@joericottone Agree agree. Of course with KC, the entire defense, all 11 guys, could be considered MVP too. And Harrison Butker too. 4 Super Bowl FGs. And 2 or 3 or 4 each in the Bills and Ravens games too. He was the kicking MAN.
The MVP award has lost all meaning. Just giving it to qb at this point
no doubt
Your channel is gold this is exactly the content I look for
Thanks so much man, much appreciated!
It probably would have been a good year to give the MVP to a non QB. None of the QBs had all that impressive of seasons.
100% - CMC or Hill
I do wish the format were changed to honor more players (e.g QB cannot win OPOY, MVP becomes Most Outstanding Player, individual position group awards -like all-pro but with trophies), but this is literally the same award that the AP gave to a kicker in the 70s….how seriously can you take it
good points - I just think more variance especially in years like this past one would be better
very well done video, glad someone said it. I was really surprised CMC didn't get more recognition, and Josh Allen totally could've gotten the MVP too. A testament to how much sports media just parrots a narrative
thanks so much man, glad you enjoyed and I appreciate the comment!
Absolutely love the channel. So glad I found it and can watch it grow. Well done thought out videos, well executed, not pushed opinions and the ones you do have are well thought out and supported. Don’t change, the success is coming your way
Really appreciate that man, the support means the world to me!
You've earned a subscriber with this video. Very well done, sir.
Thanks so much man
As a 49er fan I have two thoughts.
I appreciate that! I’d love to know your opinion after you finish!
If you watch first take yesterday. Stephen A smith said he doesn't think lamar would win a superbowl if he and mahomes switched team's. Talk about doubling down. These analysts are really stupid 😒
We all know why Lamar got another nearly unanimous MVP despite a Tyrod Taylor year
No way in hell Lamar should have won the MVP he was average this year and every passing stat shows it.
Stephen A smith is a fucking clown
Lamar Jackson lost 6 fumbles last year not 2. He had 13 total turnover.
Lamar has only won mvp when his defense has been insane
Really enjoy your videos.
Thanks so much!!
4:51 Jared Goff 😅
Good point!!! you win the prize!
Quality vid!
Thank you!
The amount of time Lamar sat out in the 4th due to blowing out teams so bad was over a game, not including sitting out the entire last game. On top of that they rushed for the most yards. Lamar is not going to have the most passing yards
Lamar is the most media coddled qb I’ve seen in my life, hes absolutely horrible in the playoffs and gets embarrassed year in and year out
The majority of sports media talking heads like Stephen A. are actually incredibly unintelligent when it comes to taking stances backed by metrics or unbiased reason. No player should ever be unanimous MVP when they aren’t leading in any major statistical category for their position. McCaffrey or Hill should have gotten the nod this year; anything else is asinine.
I think Lamar deserved it in 2019 - but we have to keep in mind, Brady didn't even win unanimously in 2007 after throwing 50 and going 16-0
He carries himself well publicly though, and that goes a long way - it's what people don't understand when I'm critical about Kyler Murray - K1 makes himself an enemy by the way he communicates, you could say the same thing as each other, but the packaging matters, and Lamar knows how to communicate well
😂😂😂 you done lost your damn mind
Idk why people call Purdy a System QB or Game Manager but isn’t that basically all NFL QBs are to manage the offense.
Unanimous though? Was it close to what he did in 2019 or was the team as a whole just better?
I honestly think if CJ Stroud would have been healthy all season and played like he was he would have had a serious shot at MVP.
agreed
I'll argue it. Purdy still should have been the MVP. He's the only QB with an ANY/A over 9.00 that has not won the award. Personnel be damned.
And 2022 Justin Fields did, in fact, get one MVP vote. One more than Russell Wilson has received his entire career.
for fields i was reffering to 1st place votes
I do think your seed should be a major factor, but I absolutely agree that unanimous for Lamar last year is pretty nonsense.
I love ur vids man, ur the first “low” view channel ive seen that i think “DAMN HOW DO THEY NOT HAVE AT LEAST 100k VIEWS PER VID?!”
Thanks so much bro, really appreciate that!!
As a lions fan it should've been hill, CMC or Watt
stephen A smith doesnt know what he's talking about 🤦♂️
Let’s call it what it is. The MVP award is simply “most popular QB” award, not even best QB anymore.
I mean Mahomes technically the MVP every year
Super Bowl MVP is the real MVP
Josh Allen should've been the MVP
If Brock Purdy won the MVP I seriously doubt you would have this take on the MVP award.
And why is that? I said Purdy also didn’t necessarily deserve it - Also, the main point of the video isn’t that Lamar shouldn’t have won, it’s that he shouldn’t have been close to winning it unanimously. I’ve already made videos about this topic in the past (when Aaron Rodgers won in ‘14
SAS disgusts me!
Dak had the best year of any QB this past season. I mean he was 2nd team All Pro. That award is given to the second best qb in football.
they gave him the mvp because he played like he did in 2019 🫠
He threw 36 tds and ran for 8 more and rushed for 1200 yards? That’s news to me!
They need to do offensive and defensive mvps. Also stop riding qb meat
they do do OPOY and DPOY - so it's technically there, but still
@joericottone I get that but it's always qbs. Good point though
Who cares about if he was unanimous he got a nice trophy and the chocolates to watch the Super bowl with.
I mean look at mahomes cap hit, nobody would give that money to hill or cmc
without a doubt they're the most valuable, but look at Miami - who's more valuable, Hill or Tua?
I think if Stroud doesn't get injured he would've had a good shot
Thank you!! He wasn't even in the top 10 in some qb categories. All the analytics were against him.
I would have voted for CMC.
If we were doing a QB, i would pick Allen, the person who led the league in yards and touchdowns and the second lowest turnover worthy play rate of playoff QBs.
CMC or tyreek should’ve got it
no doubt
To be fair. Lamar is a dual threat, so isolating his passing stats or rushing stats and using that as a justification isn’t very fair. With that being said, I do not believe he was the MVP.
Isolating stats is the only reason Allen wasn’t MVP, specifically isolating his ints and excluding his yards and tds
Neither Lamar or Purdy should
Have gotten the MVP. Dak Prescott deserved the MVP and 1st team all pro. And I fucking despise the Cowboys. But put all three of their numbers down beside each other and you will
See what I’m talking about.
I believe that Lamar is the number 2 MVP in the league. That doesn’t make him the MVP for this season though
Someone said lamars mvp this year was better than 2016 Matt Ryan 💀💀💀
what were those stats again?
Tbf lamar was huge to the team. Really helped a bad wr core
I agree that Lamar shouldn’t have gotten unanimous voting but using a first round vote over Dak, Purdy or CMC should be shamed.
Yeah, Dak gets largely forgotten, I just think he lost too many big games to keep him in the convo
To your videos point defense is super important to the MVP award even though most of the candidates aren’t even defensive players,
Like the most important game to the MVP race was Ravens vs 49ers, did Lamar make Purdy throw 4 interceptions? no of course not but in the MVP narrative it made Lamar look like he dismantled the SF defense when in reality he just thrived of those turnovers his defense gave him. The reason why I bring this up is because the opposite is used for Dak, when his defense just absolutely falls apart like in Buffalo it’s treated like he was the main reason they lost that game.
If you see Lamars completions, the recievers for the most part are wide open. Even then his passes are off mark.
Just remember lamar fans said it was because of the OC in 2019 he loss agaianst the chief they made up more excuses
5:47 Justin fields did in fact receive mvp votes in 2022, he finished 9th in voting
I'm referring to first place votes
His receiving corps was underwhelming , and you are stretching too hard to make his rushing mean nothing. I admit this was a weaker MVP finalist class. It’s like when Crash won the Oscar. Ok then.
Not saying he shouldn’t have won but unanimous is ridiculous
This is a great take man, the MVP has been whack
appreciate that man!
