    I’m 60 this year and got my first guitar when I was 20. Trouble is I never stuck at it. Lot’s of reasons such as working away from home etc. But have made a conscious decision to dig my stuff out..............update with a few bits and bobs (as tech has moved on sooooo much) . Have been watching your CZcams stuff and finding it has really inspired me to get stuck in. I never really got beyond being able to play 10 chords averagely well on the guitar. Not a lack of ability.............just a lack of time and effort on my part. I love this ambient guitar stuff..........right up my street. So have ordered the MOM and am looking forward to it arriving. Around 20 years back I dabbled with various keyboards/synths/samplers (Kong Z1, Novation, Nord etc...........and have still got them too). So going to sort it all out and ‘create’. I do a lot of walking/climbing in Snowdonia, The Lakes, North York moors and up in Scotland..................and also film those. So my inspiration is to create a musical backdrop to those films. Love what you are doing and the way you share and explain. Keep up the great work and you have a new subscriber ......Mallers

    That's an incredible pedal,I just love the ethereal sounds that you can dial up on it-any guitarist can now create tonal dreamscapes that were previously only available with a lot of studio effects manipulation. I amazed by how you constantly come up with Mooer and Mooer innovative effects pedals.

    I ordered one of these about a month ago. Got to tell ya, this thing is awesome. I don't know if it is better than or less than any other pedal of its type, but wow. Has given me so much voice in my playing. I have run my guitars through it. My keyboard through it. My bass through it. It is always interesting and surprising what comes out the other side. Thanks for putting these demo videos out.

I don't wish to imitate anyone but just getting ideas from you(and Andy Othling) has pushed me into some interesting directions. I currently record on Audacity but would welcome some advise on purchased recording programs.

    A few additional notes on your excellent reviews:
    1) Deep effect editing is only for the modulated delay/reverbs; for all the other the deep editing is limited to the 4 parameters as er the knobs
    2) There is a freeze function: with a clean digital delay or reverb is a classical freeze, with tape or analog you can create some weird effects
    3) The looper has reverse and half speed but, unfortunately, no undo: it is weird that in some (even official) ads it says 44 and in other 60 seconds of looping time; in mine, it was 44
    4) Very interesting: in deep editing you can also choose the structure of the delay repeats (independently per delay A and B): 1/1, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 (dotted or normal), 1/16, etc.
    5) You can get firmware updates (the first is already out), but you need to buy special midi to usb cables (around 20$)
    Overall, excellent machine, but tap dancing is quite difficult, especially for the looper: Mooer sells a separate wireless pedalboard that can add 4 switches, but then the price increases....

    I took a chance on getting one pretty much on release as I like Devin's ethos (he's a great salesman for the product!) it looked good and I needed a dual delay/reverb.
    I use it in a lively church on modern worship so a mixture of 80s rock, post-rock and even EDM! We usually have two keyboards too but there's still space for a bit of textural ambient 6-string loveliness!
    So, after a month or two...
    Pros
    lots of great sounds - very flexible
    lots of patch slots
    great value (If money was no object, I'd go for Source Audio or Strymon Delay/Reverb but this does the same sort of job perfectly well.
    Cons
    I find the shimmer is just a tad harsh/artificial for me
    The tap tempo is a bit close to the menu button so I've accidentally pressed it a few times but I'll learn not to or maybe 'hack it' with a little cover or something!
    When switching from some of the more intense patches there can be a weird 'video-game style' sound as it transitions. I just look at the keyboard-player as if to say 'Was that you?!" ;) but ideally it'd be a little more elegant! Or there may be a setting I've missed - suggestions welcome! :)
    So, on balance - I've found it to be a great piece of kit at a great price (even at the original RRP which was what I paid before the price was dropped.)
    Really great CZcams channel by the way. I work in education and I think your presentation style is great.

      I just bought a Zoom G3Xn

    • @chordsoforion
      @chordsoforion  Před 7 lety

      I spent 2 hours last night working the OM. The more I use it, the more I like it. The 2 limitations that I see are 1) looper is only 44 seconds and 2) longest delay time is 2 seconds. If that does not bother you, then it's worth serious consideration.

    • @Headsqueezer
      @Headsqueezer Před 7 lety

      I'd love to get more looping time, but then I can get a pedal dedicated for that. As for the delay time, my Nova has 2290ms so I think it wouldn't make much difference. One thing that bothers me though is that I'm used to manually setting the delay time in BPM and storing it as presets for gigging purposes and was wondering if it was easy to change presets up and down on the Ocean Machine?

    • @Headsqueezer
      @Headsqueezer Před 7 lety

      I don't want to sound crazy, but that's the third time you inspired me for something guitar-rig-related. First I got a volume pedal because of coming across your channel, then recently I decided to swap it with the octaver in my chain (which btw makes perfect sense) and now the Ocean Machine. You are being very helpful sir, thank you!

    Even it's a 5 year old video...
    It's still a good demonstration.
    This pedal is worth every cent, it's even a steal. I got one used for 110€\$.
    The possibilities of this pedal are endless and if there were a name on it like Strymon it would cost 500+
    Most musicians don't know what they miss without an ocean machine.
    Btw. With the firmware update it has Midi Clock included.

    Excellent demo. What puts me off buying are the significant number of reviews which mention that the unit either fails after a short time or that build quality is dubious ... but most negatives seem to focus on the number of units which fail within a few months. Soundwise it sounds amazing with masses of potential for anyone who enjoys creating ambient-style pieces.

  • @BillKeilt
    @BillKeilt Před 7 lety +2

    Hey Bill: thanks for this review. It's a very interesting pedal with a lot of bang for the buck. It's on my GAS list, (with a Strymon El Capistan, and others). What I like about it especially is the pre-set capability; 24 pre-sets. This is really nice. I find that my other delays, Flashback Triple for instance, there are only the 3 "on-off-pre-set" buttons, so effectively, three presets, but they disappear if you save something over them for the current setting. Plus you can't see what your pre-set is comprised of. That's not a show-stopper, but, well, it's annoying and limiting. So for that reason alone, I'm nudging this Mooer delay up the GAS list.
    On the downside, what I'm finding, at my stage of ambient guitar, is that flexibility like "Tone Prints" and "Source Audio Neuro App" etc. make for too many choices, not enough music making. It's easy to get lost for a couple of hours messing around with my LA Lady on the Neuro App, and frankly, I don't get much out of it. Perhaps in years, when my ear for this type of sound is more refined, I'll like being able to dial-in some exact sound. But with my SA Nemesis delay, Flashback Triple delay, and Strymon Dig, plus my Neunaber Immerse and Boss RV-6 reverbs, I have A LOT OF SOUNDS available to me without having to dial in much.
    So on the one hand, I'm happy and making nice music, on the other hand, GAS is killing me!
    Thanks for your work.........Bill in Colorado

      As far as reverb and delay pedals goes in my collection so far the list is: BigSky,BlueSky,Immerse,delays :Flashback Trip,e delay love that one use a lot the Toneprint Ediotr to make my own sound and stack them,next is Alter Ego X4 and Timeline.Believe me I stack all these three reverb and delay pedals and I get some pretty crazy sounds in the good way Ofcourse.But this Ocean machine Doesent sound right to me.Nothing that my others pedals can't recreate better,but that's just me.

    • @BillKeilt
      @BillKeilt Před 7 lety

      Thanks for the response. Wondering: do you stack the reverbs too? I found that multiple reverbs get chaotic, not nice. As for me, I generally have a hard time judging the actual "sound" of a pedal by listening online, through headphones or not so good speakers. But I hear you that you don't like the sound of the Ocean. I A/B'd the Neunaber Immerse vs the Boss RV-6 through my rig and amp, and wow, I thought the sounds of the Immerse were MUCH more pleasant; less metallic; more organic; words can't describe...just "better".

    • @davidknight754
      @davidknight754 Před 7 lety

      I would agree with you that this pedal perhaps doesn't sound as good as all those pedals put into a line. It is $299 and doesn't even have the high end processors of the BigSky for example. For myself, I'm picking it up for the portability, travel, etc. I have all 4 Eventide Factor pedals and Strymon Timeline, Bigsky, Dig, Riverside. I still see a benefit to this pedal. I'm heavily into sound design and can see applications for even the wackiest delays on the Ocean Machine. Would I have this as my only pedal in my chain for delay / reverb / looping? Not a chance.

    • @savanaviolenta
      @savanaviolenta Před 7 lety

      The sound of the ocean no I don't like it's not inspiring to me.As far as delays go I need to add the DIG to my Timeline,TC Triple delay and Alter Ego and TC T2 reverb and four reverb and delay pedals are fine enough for me,anyway I only make recordings at my studio I don't p,any in a band so I need different types of reverb and delay algorithms,I need all my tracks to sound as different as possible from one another.

    • @davidknight754
      @davidknight754 Před 7 lety

      Sounds good to me! I just picked up the TC Triple Delay myself. I think I now have a total of 5 delay pedals... Half of them are setup as send effects from the mixer and aren't specifically in the guitar chain. I use them for synths and modular gear. An update on the Ocean Machine. I've pulled it out of the guitar chain for now, and put it in series with my Prophet 08 since the original Prophet 08 doesn't have any effects. It is opening up a whole new set of sound design possibilities.

    Hey Devon, Just subscribed and love the channel and just wanted to say thanks. Really great stuff. I like this unit. I had a Boss Giga delay and sold it years back and I miss it from time to time and now that I have watched this I am on a different trajectory. Played pretty heavy music for years and getting into the sound shaping and ambient as well as Synthesizer sounds. It's all so fun and infinite. I think I will order one of these. If you and anyone else can recommend a few Synth Pedals I would appreciate it. Happy Trails-

    how about the shimmer on this pedal compared to the hall of fame 2?

    • @chordsoforion
      @chordsoforion  Před 7 lety

      The shimmer on both pedals is implemented differently. The Hall of Fame has a specific reverb type called shimmer, while the Ocean Machine has a shimmer knob that allows shimmer to be added to each reverb type.

    $300 for a Mooer pedal? I hope they're stepping up their build game at that price point. I've had several of their micropedals, and while they're fun, they're not terribly reliable.

    There is a big problem with this pedal ans is the bypass. If you want to activate or bypass the three effects you have to do it one by one. So there is no option to activate or bypass the three effects at the same time.

    Very detailed&interesting review... But I have a question: Recently Wampler made a similar ambient pedal 'Ethereal'. I say similar to the way it produces ambient stuff. Can you please compare those two and maybe suggest which one is more 'ambient' and better sounding (except the fact that Wampler is analog and this is digital) because I've never had those two in my hands. Thanks for your videos... they are most inspiring.

    • @chordsoforion
      @chordsoforion  Před 6 lety

      Glad you are liking the vids! I have never played or seen in person and Ethereal, however, I don't think it is that similar to the Ocean Machine, which has 2 discrete delays, a reverb and a looper. Also, the Ethereal is mono, which is not ideal for me. I would more likely compare it to version 1 of the Earthquaker Devices Avalanche Run, which is more similar combination of effects. All that being said, if Wampler ever sent me, I'd be happy to do a demo of it. Wampler makes great pedals for sure!

    • @markoborscak9718
      @markoborscak9718 Před 6 lety

      Many thanks for the reply... I'm trying to see what is the best choice for the buck. Cause, Ethereal is surprisingly more expensive than Mooer and because of all the other options that Mooer offers I think I'm going for the Ocean Machine at the moment. :) Keep up the good work. Regards from sunny Croatia.
