Never thought I'd ever correct this guy concerning cars, but the holes in the block are for 1st and foremost for getting the sand out of the casting. The plugs are to seal the block from leaking.
Incidentally, "freeze plugs" is a popular misnomer. Contrary to popular belief, there are NOT there so freezing water expands out through the holes. What they actually are are the points at which the compressed sand cores that create the water jackets and voids are held in the mold when the molten iron is poured in to cast the block...and the dried and broken-up sand is poured out after the casting has cooled. The other common term, "core plugs", is actually the correct one.
100% correct
Reliability is more important than numbers matching.
This is not a daily driver.
Agreed, keep the old engine, but install something better
Numbers matching is a beautiful thing.
Cool engine
Mark is hilarious I get his personality guy's could be a comedian
ahhh man... all of that work..... hahaha hose clamp at the end, classic stuff. Absolutely amazing work top to bottom guys, wow.... who would of thought you could of saved something like that.
Numbers matching engine is worth big bucks, I had no idea this could be done to rescue a #'s engine or anyother engine for that matter. If you wanted to race or drive the crap out of the car you could always put in another engine and when it was time to sell, slip the original engine back in.
They create the market by making such rules. It is ok to replace most of the rest of the vehicle when doing restoration. So is the vehicle original from the factory if it has just the parts with the matching numbers. Not really. It works because they can make people believe it is original. And does it really matter ? The man behind the curtain in the wizard of OZ.
@@rayRay-pw6gz who is they?
@@Milkmans_Son they are people that promote this system. Most humans are just followers. Everybody that stands to profit by promoting a system . Like all the main money makers in that system. Why would it really matter that the engine numbers match the frame numbers. It is like convicing someone to spend big money on a diamond ring to prove they love their partner. Where is the reality in that ?
@@rayRay-pw6gz What does most humans being followers have to do with anything? It's not a conspiracy. A car with it's original engine is more desirable than one without. It's no different than any other collector market. A painting with a signature is worth more than one without. An original Hotwheels car is worth more with the original packaging than without. Some people are into stamp collecting, some people aren't. Participating in the hobby, promoting a system. Six of one, half dozen of another.
@@Milkmans_Son as long as you believe ! ✌️🫶👍
Eveyone seems to think that the hydraulic lifters on these MOPARS will miraculously compensate for valve adjustments.
Hydraulic lifters have a MAXIMUM compensation of .060 .
After a valve job, the most important measurements you can make, are to make sure that the pushrods , in the compressd state by the cam shaft, have .030 of room to make sure there is room to allow the valves to close.
.030 is a safe number to us to factor in momentary valve float.
Excellent videos and beautiful cars.
Take care all
they dont break because of no antifreeze, they break when the antifreeze isnt rated for the temp and freezes and expands the block.
Years ago I found a Cuda with 426 hemi had more than one carb and shifter on the floor. I could've got for $3,000 no rust. Needed clutch.
It's getting deep a master like Doug smoked good stuff
That block i would not want in my car, gone is gone, i'd put a brand new hemi in her, i personally don't care about matching numbers. Hotwelding can work though if you run it carefully.
Honestly the best way to store an old motor is to drain it of all water and antifreeze. These motors get stored for decades and no AF will last that long.
Not freeze plugs they do no pop out when freezing they are casting core plugs ask tony not true mark
I caught that too, the holes purpose is to clean out the casting sand after the block is cast.
bingo, sand has to come out after a pour.
Sometimes they do pop,I’ve seen several that have and several that haven’t.
Should have sent to India they do amazing repairs look at there skits sandles and hot fluxs every where
Missed the company name, but I know the conversion parts are made in Texas, which is the most important thing..
I didn't trust an engine builder that doesn't know he's torquing using foot lbs and actually thinks square ince lbs is a measurement.
"freeze plugs" do not exist, those are core plugs, they are a left over from the casting process, nothing to do with frost prtection
ola why is there germn insignia on the block
This is a rerun
The block can be fixed
?
Why always call these videos new when they are all reruns? Does gyc really to post click bait??
No way in hell should y’all be putting flat tappet cams in any build. A modern roller is a no brainer considering the quality of todays oil.
Mark torques shit
You say never seen, but we did 👎
Mark is so annoying sometimes. If he would shut up the show would have been better.
Mark still acts like he is in high school so very sophomoric.
