The Unknown Truth Of VANS Shoes

Paul Van Doren, his brother James, and Gordon C. Lee opened the first Vans store under the name The Van Doren Rubber Company on March 16, 1966, at 704 East Broadway in Anaheim, California. The business manufactured shoes and sold them directly to the public. On that first morning, 12 customers purchased Vans deck shoes. Now the company is on of the biggest and famous shoe companies. This is the story about Vans, a story of starting, investing, failing, get up and start over again.

What they did to get out of chapter 11, revised the leadership team, staff reductions, trimmed expenses, and a re-focus on the core business. It was a time of extreme grit, hard decisions, and vision that I know too well. Bear in mind, Vans were actually made in SoCal and the cost to produce was far greater than most notable brands that imported. Much more to the story but I'll stop there.
