Lots of great points there, I haven't tried it for a recipe yet (other than when I was watching the video), but the utility that I could maybe see is just for the brainstorming aspect of it. Maybe getting an idea for an ingredient or something along those lines, but you're definitely right about the need to understand the process. Cheers!

I used AI to brew a pale ale for my wedding. Built a great recipe but it needed help with IBUs as it was suggesting way too many bittering hops. Turned out great after some tweaks!
It’s a great tool if you already know how to brew. You can also challenge it further by asking for a more complex grist, and ask it for explanations on each ingredients flavor contribution.

Last summer a brewery here in Texas (3 Nations in Carrollton) brewed a WC IPA off a chatGPT recipe and another one off a recipe by their head brewer. They then had a weekend where you could go to the brewery, get a 6oz pour of each, taste them blindly (they were just labeled “A” and “B”), and vote for which one you liked better. The result was a tie. It was a cool way to get some attention to recipe for people who wouldn’t normally think that deeply about their beer.

Ask that question to ChatGPT the answer is totally different.
ME: what is a good recipe for a new england style hazy ipa
    ChatGPT
Sure, here's a basic recipe for a New England style Hazy IPA:
    Ingredients:
    Malts:
    8 lbs (3.6 kg) Pale Malt (2-row)
2 lbs (0.9 kg) Flaked Oats
1 lb (0.45 kg) White Wheat Malt
    Hops:
1 oz (28 g) Citra Hops (for bittering, added at the beginning of the boil)
1 oz (28 g) Citra Hops (for flavor, added at the end of the boil)
1 oz (28 g) Mosaic Hops (for flavor, added at the end of the boil)
2 oz (56 g) Citra Hops (for dry hopping)
2 oz (56 g) Mosaic Hops (for dry hopping)
    Yeast:
London Ale III Yeast or a comparable New England style yeast strain
    Others:
Gypsum (for water treatment, if necessary)
Irish Moss or Whirlfloc Tablet (optional, for clarity)
Corn sugar or Dextrose (for priming when bottling)
    Instructions:
Mashing: Heat about 3.5 gallons (13 liters) of water to around 165°F (74°C). Add your crushed grains (pale malt, flaked oats, white wheat malt) into a mesh bag or directly into your mash tun. Mash at around 152°F (67°C) for 60 minutes.
Sparge: After mashing, sparge with enough water to collect around 6.5 gallons (25 liters) of wort in your brew kettle.
Boil: Bring the wort to a boil and add the first addition of Citra hops. Boil for 60 minutes. Add the second addition of Citra and Mosaic hops during the last 10 minutes of the boil. You can also add a Whirlfloc tablet or Irish Moss during the last 15 minutes of the boil to help with clarity, though haze is desirable in this style.
Cooling: After the boil, cool the wort rapidly to around 68°F (20°C).
Fermentation: Transfer the cooled wort to a sanitized fermentation vessel and pitch the yeast. Ferment at around 68°F (20°C) for approximately 7-10 days or until fermentation activity slows down significantly.
Dry Hopping: After primary fermentation is complete, add the dry hops (Citra and Mosaic) directly into the fermenter. Dry hop for 3-5 days at the same temperature as fermentation.
Packaging: After dry hopping, you can either package your beer into bottles or kegs. If bottling, dissolve corn sugar or dextrose in boiling water, add it to the beer, and then bottle. If kegging, simply transfer the beer to a sanitized keg.
Carbonation: If bottling, let the beer carbonate for about 2 weeks at room temperature before chilling and serving. If kegging, carbonate at a pressure of around 10-12 PSI for a few days before serving.
Enjoy: Once carbonated, your New England style Hazy IPA is ready to be enjoyed! Be sure to store it cold and drink it fresh for the best flavor.
Remember to sanitize all equipment that will come into contact with your beer to prevent contamination. Also, feel free to experiment with different hop varieties and malt combinations to customize the recipe to your taste preferences. Cheers!

I like to think about what the archetypal NEIPA is. I think Julius is a pretty good answer. New NEIPA is probably lighter in color, closer to Jasper, though. It’s hard to think of a super pale example that I’d call the archetype. Maybe one of Other Half or Trillium’s beers.
Crazy to me that I never have anything that I think tastes like Heady.

Interesting to see where the whole AI experience is going.
I recently asked ChatGPT for a recipe for an Australian style pale ale to use some ingredients that I had on hand.
Just kit and kilo type stuff with some extra grains and hops.
Below is what it gave me. (This is currently cold crashing ready to keg on the weekend).
    SG 1.044 FG 1.013
I want to brew an ale style beer with 1.7kg of extra light un-hopped extract, 1kg of dextrose, 500 grams of crushed pilsener malt, 50 grams pride of ringwood hops, 50 grams galaxy hops and 50 grams motueka hops. can you suggest a recipe?
    ChatGPT
Certainly! Based on the ingredients you provided, here's a simple recipe for an ale-style beer:
    Ingredients:
1.7 kg Extra Light Un-hopped Liquid Malt Extract
    1 kg Dextrose (corn sugar)
500 grams Crushed Pilsner Malt (for steeping)
50 grams Pride of Ringwood Hops
    50 grams Galaxy Hops
    50 grams Motueka Hops
Yeast suitable for ale styles (such as US-05, Safale S-04, or similar)
    Instructions:
    Steeping the Grains:
Place the crushed Pilsner malt in a muslin bag or steeping bag.
Heat about 3-4 litres of water to around 65-70°C (149-158°F).
Steep the grains in the hot water for about 30 minutes, like making tea. This extracts colour and flavour.
Remove the grains and discard them.
    Boiling:
Bring the wort (the liquid from steeping) to a boil.
Once boiling, remove the pot from heat and add the liquid malt extract (LME) and dextrose, stirring well to dissolve completely.
    Hop Additions:
Return the pot to heat and bring back to a boil.
Add the hops according to the schedule:
Add 25 grams of Pride of Ringwood hops at the beginning of the boil (60 minutes).
Add 15 grams of Galaxy hops with 15 minutes remaining in the boil.
Add 15 grams of Motueka hops with 5 minutes remaining in the boil.
Add the remaining 25 grams of Pride of Ringwood hops at flameout (end of the boil).
If desired, you can reserve some hops for dry hopping during fermentation for added aroma.
    Cooling and Fermentation:
After boiling, cool the wort rapidly to around 18-20°C (64-68°F).
Transfer the cooled wort to a sanitized fermenter.
Top up with cool, clean water to reach your desired batch volume, typically 19-23 litres (5-6 gallons).
Pitch your chosen ale yeast into the fermenter.
    Fermentation:
Seal the fermenter with an airlock and allow fermentation to proceed at a stable temperature, ideally around 18-20°C (64-68°F).
Fermentation will typically take around 1-2 weeks to complete. You'll know it's done when the airlock stops bubbling and the specific gravity stabilizes.
    Bottling or Kegging:
Once fermentation is complete, you can bottle or keg your beer. If bottling, add priming sugar to carbonate the beer in the bottles.
Allow the beer to carbonate for another 1-2 weeks before enjoying.
This recipe should produce a refreshing ale with a balanced malt and hop profile, featuring notes of citrus and floral from the Galaxy and Motueka hops. Adjustments can be made to hop quantities or timing based on personal preference and desired flavour intensity.

I think AI is pretty good for quickly creating a to-style foundational recipe. It does a good job of finding appropriate ratios of base-to-specialty malt, IBU, and water profiles but after that, its kinda useless. The recipes are always super boring and the proecess is always at least somewhat flawed. I often use it to generate a starting point when brewing a new style (it was particularly useful for a weizenbock, which has lots of recipe variability) then heavily tweak based on research, curiousity, and personal taste
