And there you have it. The most beautiful love song ever written, sung by Bobby Hatfield, the greatest Tenor ever was. Bobby was a counter-tenor, he could go from Baritone to G5 and above. NOT falsetto. Bill and Bobby together were unbelievable. That night, in October 1965, a world of women fell in love. I was one of them...

That video is a miracle, because without the visuals we’d all believe there were multiple takes spliced in from the studio and we’d never realize how effortless the singer makes it sound. Look at Bobby’s FACE, his little smiles, the work of his throat and lips in enunciating the words (the open/arms of the sea: notice how he clearly differentiates ‘open’ and ‘arms’ to make them crystal clear to the ear). His flights into the stratosphere at the end are not in the score (obviously), but watching him yodel his way right up to the last note makes you realize how RESTRAINED his delivery of the song was. This is great art.

No music performance has equaled this, before or since. I am 77 years old and remember when the Righteous Brothers were first played on the radio. Back then, new performers were first played on radio. Later, if they became more well known, we would see them on television, in concerts and on vinyl record covers. We did not have internet. When they first were heard on radio, millions of us assumed that with that sound, they must be black gentlemen. When we first saw them, we were amazed that they were white gentlemen. Their style was then referred to as "Blue Eyed Soul". The other brother, Bill Medley was the baritone. and also an amazing singer. Bobby Hatfield died way too young at 52 years of age. It was around 2003, I believe. Bobby was taking a nap in his hotel room, before they were due to perform in a venue. He never showed up. Phone calls went unanswered. When folks went to his hotel room, he had already passed away from a heart condition and Cocaine. That heavenly voice was silenced. Bill Medley is still alive. Whenever I hear him singing Unchained Melody, I still get the good chills and tears. Great reaction. Very well done.

This was live. His mom was in the audience. No auto-tunes. Just a young man, a microphone and God given talent. The Righteous Brothers are Bobby Hatfield (seen here) and Bill Medley. They each did solos in their performances. This was and will ever by Bobby Hatfield's song. Many artists have recorded it but none did it as good as Bobby Hatfield. At this time, audiences sat politely and listened to artists perform....until Elvis and The Beatles messed that up. Bobby passed away in 2003.

By this time, he and Bill had been performing live regularly on the music show Shindig for more than a year, and doing other tv appearances, so were used to television. There's a clip somewhere on YT of the boys chatting to Andy Williams, Bobby had a slight head cold and was obviously nervous because his parents were sitting behind in the audience, and he could hardly catch his breath to speak and then two minutes later, they leave him alone on that tiny stage, and he turns in this live performance, which has become the gold standard for this song. And the Andy Williams orchestra turned in a bang-up performance too. Just amazing, I never tire of listening to Bobby, he's easy on the eye as well ;)

Props need to go out to music composer Alex North and Lyricist Hy Zaret for writing one of the greatest love songs ever. Unchained Melody was written as the music score for a 1955 prison movie titled "Unchained." Ten years later in 1965 on the 'Andy Williams Show. Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers along with the Andy Williams Orchestra gave the greatest live performance in television history. This performance has become the quintessential version of them all. The rest as they say is history.

I can't help wondering if the cocaine use may have come about because of what another commenter referred to as his "nearly debilitating stage fright". I'm reminded of the great Swedish operatic tenor Jussi Bjoerling, who was an alcoholic. I believe his wife said that that was how he dealt with the stress of worrying about disappointing his audience in his performances. Sometimes the most hugely talented people are also the most vulnerable, it seems.

AS YOU RIGHTLY SAID, HE WAS BORN FOR THIS . THERE IS NO QUESTION THAT BOBBY HAD A GOD GIVEN MUSICAL TALENT.
I MEAN TO SAY , CAN YOU BELIEVE A PERFORMANCE LIKE THIS FROM BOBBY HATFIELD BACK IN 1965. THIS IS WHAT WE NOW CALL "X-FACTOR PLUS".
I HAVE HEARD MANY VERSIONS OF THIS ICONIC SONG INCL ELVIS,DIAMOND, HUMPERDINK & OTHERS, BUT BOBBY SUNG THIS PARTICULAR SONG THE BEST.
AND, BY THE WAY, BOBBYS VERSION OF THIS SONG WAS IN THAT FAMOUS FILM "GHOST" STARRING PATRICK SWAYZE AND DEMI MOORE AND WHOOPIE GOLDEBERG

From a music and historical perspective, 1965 was a different time. The Vietnam War hadn't really ramped up yet. A couple years later it was starting to go full tilt boogie. Dead and wounded soldiers were shipped home. There was real division in the country of what we were doing there. The counterculture rose up and the country changed and the music changed with it. There were some anthems that people got caught up in. Try "For what it is worth" by Buffalo Springfield. Lots of ant-war songs by Creedence Clearwater Revival too. Sex, drugs, and rock and roll became words to live by.

Thank you for adding some context. There are too many comments about the 60's and its music being only "the good old days", and comments by people who lived then, when it was rather complicated and difficult, though it shifted further to that in the mid 60's.

Old school AKA singers who can really sing and musicians who can really play instruments. No auto tune or computer generated sounds.
Please bring music back. It is dying a slow death.

Thanks for another great reaction to this classic "60s song from Bobbie Hatfield of The Righteous Brothers. Since I'm also a big Angelina Jordan fan, highly recommend that you also check out her cover of this song (I believe she was 10 or 11). Thank you. And may GOD continue to watch over & bless Angelina Jordan.

Bobby’s vocals were very impressive. His range in this song, I think is about 2-3 octaves. I wouldn’t think any male pop singer could do this today.

Think about this: Bobby Hatfield was 25 when this was filmed. How many 25 year olds could get on a stage and belt out a performance like this today? Very few I'm guessing.

Not to take away from the Righteous Brothers or the Bee Gees.. because both groups are great.. maybe you can play some classic Motown, Temptations, Smokey Robinson , Marvin Gay, and the 4 Tops.. Great music from the 60s..
