When I was stationed at Bovington Camp in Dorset, way back in the day. The regiment in its history had been presented with freedom of Poole. Once a year, in the summer of course, the regiment were expected and did complete march from camp , all around and through Poole.
The band would strike up on our Drill Square and the various companies would leave the cam until the whole tegiment was marching as one. The band would lead us out the camp and onto the road, but eventually would disappear,x then it was just the boots keeping time with the Company NCO’s keeping a rhythm as they shouted out the “‘eft. ‘eft ‘Eft right ‘eft. I forget how many miles it was but I was enough! Having marched through the town of Poole with the people (which in fairness kept us motivated to do a good job) cheering and shouting, flags waving, it was good.
Soon the town was left behind, soon the NCO’s called the rhythm again. You could see the shoulders of the troopers dropping, backs not so straight as they once were, heads not looking ahead quite as they should………. Then …… in the distance………. Can you hear it?……… the Regimental Band were out to meet us. The effect that music had on us lot was amazing. You saw heads lift, shoulders raise, the swing was more determined, the pace sharp and rhythmic. In all it lifted us poor sods ( who had had no refreshments for the duration of the March) to top dollar again, as sharp as when we left the camp.
So thank you all bands of the military, you lift the spirit of may a soldier, troop, company Division and Regiment…. God bless you all and keep safe. Sorry for the ramble, I just thought people should have a bit of insight as to the effect that these marvellous musicians have on us troopers!!!!!

Very similar to when I served in Germany in the early 1950’s we used to have a route march every fortnight in battle order, the first two hours with Respirators on. After the all day slog, on the return to barracks about a mile out the band used to join the weary battalion halfway along the long column, and the difference it made was amazing. Heads up, shoulders back with a quickened pace! As we marched through the barrack gates the band used the play the regimental march ‘Braganza’. Happy days long ago and not forgotten!

Well I’m a bit late having caught up with this video but it’s really well filmed and the sound is excellent. Where it is shot nearer to the individual instruments I like the sort of “kit form” effect, ie the different parts each instrument plays in the build of the band and it’s performance , really interesting and wholly enjoyable 😎 Thanks for making it available 😊

Excellent. Thanks again. Among the many things I envy you is the image stabiliser. My videos could have been any good if I'd had one.
