    Collagen: Benefits for your skin, muscles, and gut: www.naomiwhittel.com/what-is-...
    When it comes to our health, I like to understand both the big picture of whole foods and the whole body; and also love learning the science that explains the intricacy and details of how our cells work. Today I want to take a deep dive with you into a very special protein in the body, called collagen. Collagen protein gets a lot of airtime when it comes to skin health, and for good reason. Collagen is essential for providing the framework and structure to skin, as well as other tissues in the body. It forms our skin, cartilage, bones, blood vessels, tendons, joints, gut lining, eyes, and muscles.
    Now, the issue is that our collagen levels drop as we age. When that happens, it
    shows up in the form of wrinkles, saggy skin, joint pain, weakening muscles, and GI
    problems (that’s because collagen helps support your digestive tract). That’s why I incorporate collagen into my life everyday.
    I visited China over 15 years ago and I noticed how youthful and healthy
    the skin of the women looked. I attributed this to their high intake of collagen-rich
    foods, such as fatty fish, bone broth, algae, and duck, so I formulated my collagen
    supplements to help emulate what this culture was doing naturally through their
    diets-to help fill in the gaps nutrition-wise so women could get and maintain
    vibrant, youthful skin.
    When you can increase your collagen, you’re giving your body a natural boost
    to help support all of these structures important for maintaining a youthful body. So,
    yes, there are many benefits of collagen, such as a healthier gut and improved skin.
    That’s because collagen boosts skin elasticity, which helps it glow and fight against
    signs of aging, like wrinkles. In addition, it has also been shown to help everything
    from your heart and muscles to your bones and joints.

However, I've been mostly on a plant based diet. I have thyroid issues so just recently went off all night shades and grains. I bought your glow 15 because I wanted to add collagenn to my diet. I am wondering what exactly is in your formula? It doesn't say. Is it bovine? My skin does seem to be improving.

    Does collagen stimulate mTor and is it high in methionine?

    • @naomiwhittel
      @naomiwhittel  Před 5 lety +1

      Thank you for watching! Collagen is made of the amino acids proline, glycine and glutamine. It doesn't contain methionine. In theory collagen may stimulate mTor, but it might depend on a lot of different factors. At this time there is so much that we don't know about this connection, but we will certainly be following the research to learn more. - Naomi's Coaching Team

  • @CosmosandChaos
    @CosmosandChaos Před 5 lety +4

    How do you balance collagen intake with autophagy? If you eat 20-50g of collagen, doesn’t the protein (Leucine especially) level inhibit autophagy as mTor is activated? You recommend 15-25 g or less of protein 3x/ week in Glow15, so how can you utilize that system consuming up to 50g collagen? Please make a video about this. Thanks!!!

    • @naomiwhittel
      @naomiwhittel  Před 5 lety +2

      Thank you for watching - what an interesting topic to dive deeper into! In general, the body likes to pulse or cycle and this is one of the foundations of Glow15 with both intermittent fasting and protein cycling. A higher collagen intake could certainly work on a Glow15 High Day where the goal is to nourish and build the body, which is alternated with Low Days where the benefits of autophagy are amplified. Collagen is made of the 3 amino acids - proline, glycine and glutamine. Leucine is more abundant in the proteins from muscle meat, eggs and dairy. - Naomi's Coaching Team

    • @naomiwhittel
      @naomiwhittel  Před 5 lety +1

      @@slowmudworm Right - you will want to increase your collagen intake on your high days - beyond the 20-50g. @naomiwhittel  Před 5 lety +1

      Great question! It is always important to choose a high quality supplement that is derived from an uncontaminated source - this goes for both bovine and marine collagen. As for differences, there is some evidence to suggest that marine is better absorbed and marine is typically the type of collagen used in skincare products. - Naomi's Coaching Team

      Hi Lucy. Collagen is a protein that is unique to animals. For those that include fish/seafood in their diets, a marine collagen protein supplement is a good option, along with consuming fish stocks and small fish where you can eat the bones/cartilage. For vegans/vegetarians, it can be helpful to meet your protein needs so that you have the building blocks to make your own collagen and also consume vitamin C-rich foods (broccoli, citrus, bell peppers, etc.) to support the process. - Naomi's Coaching Team
