  • The Real Skinny on Fat is a 9-part documentary series that uncovers the truth about FAT and how it affects your health, your weight, and your aging.
    It is available to watch online for FREE beginning May 14, 2019 at 8PM EST. Be sure to sign up here to join us aff.therealskin... and receive your unique viewing link!
    In the following video, I sit down with the lovely and brilliant, Dr. Felice Gersh. Dr. Gersh is a Board Certified OB/GYN currently working with the Integrative Medical Group of Irvine, California. She is also fellowship trained in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona School of Medicine. As she says “from the beginning of my career, my approach to medicine has been inclusive, which is why I have always incorporated treatments rarely found within the confines of conventional American medicine.”
    This is one of two times I have had the pleasure of sitting with Dr. Gersh. I find it endlessly fascinating and truly inspiring to listen to her vast wealth of knowledge. She is such a pleasure to talk to and possesses an amazing mind.
    In the following talk, Dr. Gersh covers a LOT of ground related to general health and wellness, with information that all falls under the umbrella of our circadian rhythm and its importance in almost every aspect of our lives.
    Many of us may refer to our “body clocks” as simply getting a good night’s sleep - early to bed, early to rise, lest we wake up sleepy and groggy. Well, let me tell you, brain fog is the least of our worries! The truth and facts surrounding our circadian rhythm, and the importance of quality sleep at the right time, is at once absolutely shocking and fascinating. Our sleep patterns really do have a domino effect on almost every organ in our bodies. It affects our minds and mental health, our emotions, and so much more. Dr. Gersh covers many topics in this talk, including hormones, fasting, autophagy, weight loss, disease prevention, cognitive issues, diet and nutrition, eating times, insulin, sugar, microbiomes, anti-aging, even P.M.S. and its relation to circadian dysfunction. There is a wealth of information here that I hope will motivate you to make small changes in your lifestyle that will yield big health rewards.
    So, the next time you find yourself sitting in bed with your laptop at 2 a.m., and guzzling coffee just to function the following morning/afternoon, think twice and watch this interview. It may change your life in ways you couldn’t possibly imagine.
    As the doctor herself so eloquently puts it, “it’s not just about our health, but also about our happiness.”

    I can't stay up till 10. I go to bed at 8:30 every night and get up between 3 and 4. Same on week ends. I always have. I always fall asleep within 5 min. I have tried to stretch it out an hour or so but always fall back to 8:30. At 78 and healthy, no meds and seldom get sick, it looks like I am stuck with it.

    It's amazing how many different views there are about how much time it takes to trigger autophagy. She says 4 days water fast at least. Then the other man you interviewed says different. I'd like to see some studies on people on a true ketogenic diet and practicing intermittent fasting and some extended fasts and see some scientific studies on when autophagy occurs. So many different opinions...

    How do we address these issues for shift workers? I am a nurse. I work 12 hours overnight 8p-8a. 4 nights a week. I have been doing the keto diet since February and I have done some intermittent fasting and also a 5 fast. 3 questions: do I just need to get out of this shift or is there way to adjust circadian rhythm? And also how often can we do that longer fast? And how long do the benefits last?

    Hi Naomi - Dr. Gersh said that atophagy wouldn't happen until day 4 (or after day 4) of fasting. I think that is a longer length of time than what I've heard you and some of your other guests suggest as a time frame for atophagy. Maybe it is unique to each individual, but if my OMAD days, or my 48 hour fasts, aren't making a difference (except to lose weight) then what am I doing them for?? Anyone else have this question/concern?

      People who exercise look younger and look healthy no matter what age. The answer is not fasting it’s exercise and healthy eating. But please don’t get discouraged continue fasting a couple days in a week your going to want those other benefits. ESPECIALLY spiritual fasting.

I tricked it my eating a yummy crisp pear and a juicy sweet grapefruit. Literally the best fruit I’ve tasted in months. But I took a small hour nap at 6pm and when I woke up I was immediately like where’s the sweet sugar stuff. I immediately when to the pantry and ate that blue berry muffin. And I felt so good after. 😭😭. I tried. Gonna keep trying bc I know it’s all the sugar that I eat and drink all day that it not letting my body lose weight. So frustrating. The yo-yo-ing.

    • @naomiwhittel
      @naomiwhittel  Před 5 lety +1

      Thank you Edward! So glad you enjoyed the interview! First, we always recommend speaking with your doctor before proceeding with any sort of fasting regime. But, in general, no, avoiding water during a fast is not going to improve the benefits, in fact, it could create some risks related to dehydration. It is important to drink enough water during a fast and use salt or electrolytes as needed to maintain hydration. Every cell of the body requires water for function. Mild dehydration could cause symptoms such as headache, fatigue, dizziness and more severe dehydration can affect heart rate, blood pressure and even consciousness. ~ Naomi's Coaching Team
