      @@d.m.junior6194 why do you feel it was no small tussle? Just a question and want to be educated, I don’t even know how to have a conversation with a non heterosexual person should go. Just watch a interview and it becomes complicated to decipher how to address a non heterosexual person. I mean no disrespect at all and I hope you don’t take offense.

      @d.m.junior6194 Před 2 lety +12

      @@jamaal9911 this is a very good question! It’s a very intense situation because being gay in the African American community is seen in a very horrible light and way. To come out would be to risk social, spiritual, emotional, and physical harm. This is exacerbated by the fact that many in the black community are often conservative Christian in belief or practice which makes the situation harder.

      Don't forget that the acceptance of gays as well as the entire spectrum of LGBTQ individuals. It's plastered on almost every show and advertisement, IN FRONT of children who have parents with TRADITIONAL Values. Not so far back that they want to kill someone cuz of their sexual orientation. Just to where you didn't have to worry about the COO/CEO of Disney forcing that message onto the kids that it's COOL to be gay. Not that it's ACCEPTABLE AND EVEN A PROUD MOMENT FOR THE INDIVIDUAL WHEN THEY FINALLY COME OUT. Nowadays gay people get more respect and appreciation than Blacks or cyst genders really have. Like I said, so many who not only are accepting but enforcing teaching the way of life to children and teaching children about homosexuality in school. The narratives driven by gays like they are still being pelted with rocks astounds me 🤦🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️ SMFH

    I have not seen the special (can’t afford HBO) but in interviews he’s very charming and funny. From this clip I’d say he’s the personification of representation in so many ways. Not just because of race and sexuality because he has such a great sense of self and sense of humor about his personal journey. Men like him are a role model in many ways, not just about gay or straight but about how we need to envision a broader understanding of masculinity especially in a culture where “different” is under constant attack these days. I have not black, but my perception is that the traditional image of masculinity plays a disproportionate role in their culture; all the more reason to have more examples of what being a good man looks like.

    As a mom, sometimes I struggled more with the fact that my son didn't consider me a safe enough space to open up to me, more than the secret he was keeping. Your mom may be feeling some of that as well. Give her time and treat her as you always have - after all, in a way that's what you're asking from her. I'm praying for both of you. 💕💕💕

      This is the same thing that my mom said to me at one point. She cried and asked me what she’d done to make me think she wouldn’t support me and I’ll tell you the same thing I told her:
      It’s not what you did or didn’t do. It’s that you hear so many stories about mom’s who were one way when it was other peoples’ kids and totally different when it’s their own. Even if in your heart you know your mom has got you, that .2% chance that maybe she wont be okay with it is scary. So much scarier than a 50% chance with a friend or colleague or anyone else.
      Wishing you and your son lots of love ❤

    I never found this dude funny, but I'm forreal forreal happy for him and that he's finding his way and starting to live as his authentic self.
    About the whole Still Mad You Date Somebody White thing I think black women/people are still tripped out about that because it shows just how pervasive that programming is within us as black people. That no matter our gender or sexual orientation, we are primed to aspirationally seek white partners/view Whiteness as the quintessential beauty. It's sort of inescapable when even gay brothers and sisters seek partners outside the race. As a Black person looking for a Black partner, it's only logical that it inevitably would at least plant the "Am I ever really enough?" seed in the mind.
    Of course, Love Is Love and "Maybe people just find each other and connect and have a lot in common-" etc. And yes, that can't be discounted. Still, when one understands the history and reality of the way black people have been characterized and the narratives surrounding us as partners/our perceived attractiveness or lack thereof and how that effects our prospects, it only stands to reason that continuously seeing black people at some point in our lives go for someone white would be a little disheartening. 🤷🏾‍♂️

      Interesting observations, thanks. As a white, bi guy, I have A ridiculously broad spectrum of who or what turns me on from red haired women to Idris Elba! I find men or women with dark skin and classic features that would be ordinarily attributed to a black person extraordinarily attractive. I really have never understood how anyone cannot see beauty in just about anyone but I guess that’s a byproduct of white privilege… When society tells you consciously or not that being white is the standard you can’t see what it must be like to feel secondary even within your own culture.

      you should... I used to think and feel a way until I actually asked a few why they only dated white guys, long story short, they tried and tried but lets be honest with ourselves, black gay men (can be) picky af, judgmental af, and if you have the slightest bit of femininity that can mirror any that I may have that I'm not comfortable with then its a "nah".

Reality of being black outside of who you are dating is too much, how much more when you throw in sexual orientation. All I saw was just hurt in his eyes, he is free but him having to navigate life with the possibility of cutting his Mom off is too much. This show a doubled egded sword for black men especially. If famous black men go through soo much, how much more a regular Balck kid?

    He has as very Bill Cosby approach to comedy. The sitting and calmly telling stories about his life is a very Cosby approach...although his punch lines comes a bit faster than Cosby. Both are not afraid of silence and letting their stories linger before giving their punch line.
