    To get the seals out you can just take the circlip out. Then start the engine and turn the steering wheel either direction until it stops,then hold it there. It will ( most likely) blow the seals out. Kinda messy but it's easy. Make sure the tires are straight if you take the shaft out of the steering box and don't turn the steering wheel until you put the shaft back in the steering box. Oh yeah...put the nut back on the shaft before the vehicle is started. So you don't lose the washer. And so you can see what seal goes where. I don't actually take the shaft out anymore. I clean the rust off the shaft with a brass wire wheel. I made some spacers out of pipe.I Dremeled out a couple big thick washer that fits over the shaft. Then I use the steering shaft nut to press the new seals in. I just clean the rust off the inside of the steering box with those green abrasive pads. Then start the engine again. Just in case any of the rust & dirt got up by the bearing. When you start the car with no seals in it. It will blow any contaminants out. If you can't find the exact size washer,you can trim a bigger one down with a bench grinder. I have a 96 ZJ. I put a steering box strengther on my steering box and I haven't had any problems with the seals since. I think the box flexes a little under stress since the shaft is so long. Plus it's not unheard of for the steering box to rip right off the frame. The spot welds can break. Especially if you have larger than stock tires.or take it off road. It's not a bad idea to beef up where the box mounts to the frame with an aftermarket steel plate also.

    Great video. Thanks for showing how to replace the seal in the least painful way. I replaced the seal one time without removing the shaft and it was a real pain. Also, good job on the detail provided, and the good lighting on the parts.

    This is one of the best breakdowns of replacing those seals. For such a small job it's a PITA. Gotta make sure you have a GOOD set of snap ring pliers. The ones at HF suck and the snapring keeps popping off the pliers.

    • @flinch622
      @flinch622 Před 3 lety +1

      You got that right. Snapring pliers need the correct pin size on the tool, or you just have hell. I reach for my knipex that has a 45 degree offset when it comes to getting larger snaprings in and out of odd places. This is one of those jobs.

    Thanks for posting this. I'm doing the same job on my WJ now and at first I thought I was insane for not seeing a snap ring. Then I thought it might have been jacked up by the PO's shop since they didn't always do the right job (non-HO plugs in an HO, even though the service order had the right part).

    The thing about these steering boxes is if there is any crud in the system... it's going straight for that lower bearing and seal. Most of us don't hardly think about changing out power steering fluid, yet we should. Once every 3 years ought to do it.

  • @Pure_KodiakWILD_Power
    @Pure_KodiakWILD_Power Před 2 měsíci

    Nicely done video. Odd thing is, the poorly drawn directions on my kit say the snap ring goes on last 🤔 I mean ultimately, I'll see in what order mine were installed, but there was a fella in another video who was very adamant that the solid black plastic ring should be above the snap ring, because he also found his snap ring in the second position, as you did.... I didn't finish the video, because it was long and drawn out 😂 so maybe he changed his tune by the end, I dunno.

  • @longlifeprinters9
    @longlifeprinters9 Před 2 lety +1

    I left the shaft in & I used a 3" long wood screw & screwed it into the side wall of the dust seal & also the oil seal & as I tightened the screw down it acted like an auger & the seals pulled out. My only problem on the oil seal was that the sharp end of the screw dug in between the bearings just above the seal & the tip broke off & was stuck up there in the metal. I had to pry it out & nothing was hurt, all metal up there. So maybe just get the screw tapped in & pull on it to get the seal out. When putting the new seals in I used the washer against the seals & then tapped them with a pipe that fit over the shaft = my sockets were too big around to go up in.

Almost as bad as replacing fuel pump with dropping the tank full of gas. Just did that yesterday.

  • @shopdoc
    @shopdoc Před 2 měsíci

    Not sure if this was mentioned but I am almost positive the second seal you put in was placed wrong side out. I have replaced many seals and the open end with the spring is always placed toward the pressure side…..in this case, towards the gearbox where the oil is held in. I can’t be dogmatic but I have never seen it done the other way.

    • @martinbuilt

      Many times with steering gear boxes it is hard to see where the damage to the seal is, the steering gear box is under such high pressure that it doesn't take that much to start a leak.

    Wire brush clean the Splines., Super Clean , with a small wire brush , for drill ! Than , I always PUT Anti Seize compound, ( By Permatex) on the SPLINES, before putting the Pitman arm back on the Shaft .... Cheap insurance when to take apart for the Future .. ... .. .. IT will make LIFE easier in case of next repair .. What is Anti-Seize? Anti-seize products are applied to bolts, fasteners, flanges and other clamped interfaces to prevent galling, seizing and corrosion, as well as lubricating to ease disassembly.

    And I am on a situation where I need your advise ,

    Car which will be newer , but it would be a car because I don't have the money to buy a newer jeep,
    And the other option would be to use the money to make my jeep look nicer , new lights, rims , springs and even paint etc.
    Please I would appreciate you're feedback would it be worth it to keep it , because what concerns me about it is the year since is from the 2000.
