I don't care too much about the GripX2 but man... this trails and the riding content of this video!!!! What the hell! Thats effort to take such perfect scenes! Crazy well done!
IMO, Rob is the "Top Gear" of MTB. His content and presentation are on another level, sure I can't afford all these goodies, I can't afford a Lambo either, but the quality of the videos here is on a level everyone else needs to step up to.
Rob definitely does a great job with his video production - it's been great watching the channel grow. It honestly might be time to rebrand the channel, sort of like what Seth did when he dropped his actual name from the channel name and switched to Berm Peak.
Oh man, two videos from Rob back-2-back? Um, yes please! Thank you Rob! Great video (as always), and great presentation of this new fork from FOX. I gotta admit, this upgrade from the Grip2 isn't something 'I' notice, but I'm really digging the gold color and the new technology.
I'd like to see what Shockwiz on that would show. The best just got better. 190mm, yes, I agree. Great video reveiw as always Rob, the community loves your work, thank you.
Awesome meeting you down in CA, Rob! Fantastic video- I watched the whole thing and agree with you, tho I never got a chance to try GripX2, only GripX. Still- the GripX was quite a well built fork. See you around! 🤙
Suspension has come a long way since my first full suspension bike in the mid 90's, the ProFlex Animal with the Girvin AL MCU fork. From sponges to springs, baffles and air chambers. Technology is always improving, unless you try to go to the moon again, they lost that technology and it's a painful process to get it back.....LOL.
I had a cougar full suspension 9" travel with lay down shocks rear and mx spring fork in the 70'$. Very heavyweight but could drop off 30' lips no problems. I broke long before it didn't.
Grip2 is awesome 🙌 Given the choice I’d totally go for GripX2 but if you can bag a decent saving on the Grip2 then you’re getting a sweet fork - bonus: can upgrade the Grip2 damper to GripX2 at a later date. Ps- Grip2 will be discontinued, so won’t be around for much longer!
@@nesimsarac1841he’s only saying that because fox shoved money down his throat and making him say what they want I bet if you ride one over the other you won’t notice anything just saying
I wonder what it is that gives us all different views ? I'm an Ohlins 38 M2 preferer. BUT .... I've just ordered an EXT ERA LT. So, I'm looking forward to see how that compares to the Fox 38 and the ZEB
Great review and video Rob, but I think it’s sac religious to run those huge red SRAM Maven brakes on a Fox fork. I think Hopes or Trickstuff would be more appropriate. I would like to know how the new Fox compares to the EXT on the Sonni though. 😎👍🏼
pretty cool. Nice review. My bougie a$$ is more concerned with the colorway tho.. wonder if there will be other options..., not that into the browny gold, takes away from the Kashima coating & keeps it from popping...
Not even upside down, but at least with a gold option to fit dark builds better than the orange “inmate” version… now develop something that can be self-serviced easily and I’m proactively asking for it instead of accepting what OEM manufacturers decide for me
Yes, I really want a 190mm version too. The ZEB is available with 190mm, but because I'm very heavy and ride the fork with a lot of air pressure, the ZEB is just far too progressive for me, even without volume spacers. Even without volume spacers, it is impossible for me to utilize the full travel of a ZEB, no matter how hard I jump in the flat. The air spring on Fox dips significantly deeper into the travel, which means it still works quite well even at 135-140 PSI if you open the compression completely and remove the volume spacers completely. A ZEB is significantly more progressive with equivalent air pressure (The ZEB needs less air pressure in the positive chamber for the same SAG) and open compression and it is impossible to use more than 60-70% of the spring travel. For light riders the Fox probably dips too deep into the travel because the negative chamber is larger than the ZEB, but for riders between 100kg and 135kg the Fox 38 is better suited in my opinion. But that is just my personal opinion.
Since you are now adding compression to the fork at a much higher rate than the Grip2, it only stands to reason that this new fork will ride higher in its travel.
I love how its just, "increased the valve from 20mm to 28mm." Like, ok, that probably means something to a suspension engineer. What advantage does that have? More valves means we get more clicks of adjustment? Or do you literally have to send it in so Fox can adjust the valves. Thats cool, but probably only for Pros.
A reason to charge the customer more for a fork, they don't need. Nor will a prospective buyer be able to figure out how to tune it to create any benefit over a fork costing 1/3 as much. $1000. For riders with more rocks in their head than on the trail aka a typical Rob video.
and................. 95% of the riders out there won't even know they riding the new dampener. MTB is becoming like golf. Selling snake oil to gullible folk to make them think it will better their game. Shiny new things...
Fox 38's are the worst fork on the market and yes I've had them on the same ebike with Zeb's and now DVO, I've not tried Ohlins or EXT but I've heard there really good. Fox 38's are to stiff off the top and adjusting to get them right even for a good level amature rider is a pain and you end up using the factory setting as a compromise as you did Rob. I'm sorry unless you test the same travel forks from differant manufacturers on the same bike on the same trails you can't make any claims how good they are.
Maybe you dont know how to setup a fork. Setting to 20-25% sag, then adjusting bottom out tokens, I have had my 38's feel like butter off the top and still had tons of support for large jumps. My rockshox never felt supple off the top like this.
everything you need to know about these forks- far too expensive- airspring has too much stiction- will be overstuffed with grease- will be no different on the trail to any other fox fork. coul spring still far far far far better in every single way

Steezy riding Rob! Great trail clips. 👊
I run the 38 with the regular grip damper. Still feels great to me and is hella simple to set up. Something to be said for simplicity.
wow. The way you ride that bike looks amazing. Perfect Technique. I wish i could ride like you.
My fox 38 rhythm on my kenevo has been excellent. Always cool to see new tech, but I have no complaints with my pretty basic rhythm with grip damper.

fox had perfectly good forks in 2008, what we really want is something that is easy to service and that doesn't break, why can't they just do that?
thankfully rockshox is quite reliable even tho its definitely not simple
Great video as always, thank you! Where are you riding in this video (e.g. 07:06)?
Hi Robb what set up did you use I can't find any recommendations charts on hsc lsc adjustments thanks Callum. Just had a x2 damper upgrade
Just got a Fox 38 grip 2 for my old Kona stinky Aire and upgraded to 50mm wide 27.5 wheel and tires. Should ride like new again.
Can you buy the Grip X2 cartridge individually to install into an existing Fox 38 Factory 180mm?
So, best to buy the Grip2 damper on discount then?

Did you intentionally run the fork super soft to make it look good on the slow mo or is that the way fox recommended you set it up?
Does the grip x damper have the larger pistons and increased number of shims?
So the big question.... can existing Fox forks be upgraded to the new dampers?
Yes they can 👍
Good question!!!

Would look great on the 2023 Crestline coppertop

Can't wait to see the photos of that gold fork from people that clearly spend more time making their bike look "bling" than actually ride it.

Looks good tho!
So like why didn't they make it in Fox orange? I'm sad.
What is the default brake disc size?
It’s still 180mm - I hope the update to 200mm soon, don’t really see 180mm rotors on 38’s much!

Where can I get one
Why don't fox make mtb forkes like mx forkes, usd?
Cannot get the stiffness at the wheel unless the use a big heavy axle (thats how I understand the reason behind the conventional designs in MTB)

Compare it to ohlins, for emtb
Will the new damper fit in any 38 or just the new one.
