In West Germany, in the summer of 1987, a friend and I would listen to this song almost every day on the way to work. He didn't know who sang it, and I've been searching for.......well 28 years. I just knew there was a line like 'Away......' and something about a knife mentioned at one point. I just heard it on an 80s mixcloud mix just now and Shazamed it. Can't believe I've found it. I was always worried that it wouldn't be as good as I remembered it, but it holds up all these years later. Man, I still can't believe this.

Cool Story. I had a Similar experience. I taped this song off of a college radio station. Had the cassette tap all of these years but never knew who the artist was. Decided to try Shazaming the Taped song and it pulled up The Bolshoi. I I mediated lye purchased it on iTunes
+Seán McGuinness Count me in, almost the same story as yours. I first heard it around 89 here in Houston, Tx. It took some time, like 20+ yrs to finally find it through extensive research

What I appreciated the most about The Bolshoi back in the 80's was that they sounded like a really great "blend" of all the awesome bands from that genre then, all rolled into one. Peter Murphy, Psychedelic Furs, The Cult, The Church, Simple Minds, Flesh For Lulu, etc. the list goes on.

Criminally underrated band and a damn fine one
This song was played constantly when it came out in a Punk/New Wave Club in South Florida called Echoes back in the mid to late 80's. I LOVE this song STILL. I truly feel lucky that I had that as a teen...
It was played in Louisiana in Lafayette at a club called the kingfish. I have loved it for many years in top 5 fav songs of all time. A timeless classic.

Many people saying no one knew about these guys here in the US. ILOVED THIS BAND and always felt like I had the wrong taste in music because no one I ever spoke to about these guys had heard of them. I loved this song soooooo much. My heart aches for that era. I’m 51 now only to findI I’m not the only one. Many years spent an isolated fan.
I imagine they got some airplay on college radio in certain areas of the country.

This song brings me back to my youth in Manila. I was wearing semi-bell bottoms , twisted red cross shirt , mohawk hairdo , army medic bag and black trenchcoat. Come to think of it, that later that became Goth. Best of times, punk and new wave were being played by DWXB 102.7 FM. Good times.

Ever since a friend of our played this song for us back in the 80s, it instantly became one of my top favorites. What an amazing, uplifting song and makes you just want to dance, enjoy life, drive or have fun. Great music, absolutely incredible and timeless.

Great song, great scenery. I miss the alternative music of the 1980s. Singer has smooth movements and chilled out expressions. 1980s Euro alternative music was the best ever.

I'm addicted to this song, first time I can't spend a single day without listening to it 😍. I just subscribed to Spotify and it was suggested ! I'm only 25, so I'm sorry I've never heard of this band, it was a bit of a shock to discover that there is only two albums, they deserved much more recognition in my opinion, this song is timeless and a true classic. I love the lyrics and how they are sung.

The Bolshoi were a tremendous live band and how they failed to break through is beyond me.
Just listening for the first time ever, and I am shocked I didn't hear them back in the 80 when they came out. Their sound is so tight and compelling - this song could have been at the top of the charts. Thankful at least for finding them now.

Ahhhhhh the genuine 80’s music is soooooooooooooooooo refreshingly awesome compared to what’s out there today. Today’s junk focuses too much on profanity and bashing people and making sure their junk is making them money instead of just giving music fans something to enjoy listening to like 80’s and the 90’s artists did. Pretty sad

Banda extraordinária. Excelente guitarrista e compositor, Trevor Tanner. Ouvi mais de 200 vezes o álbum Friends e ainda sinto um prazer incrivel ao ouvi-lo de novo. Como alguém já disse, uma das bandas mais sub estimadas da década de 80, bem como The Chameleons.
Lindy's Party é também um album perfeito.

Trevor Tanner é a epítome do 'cool' esperto britânico, que com humildade e simplicidade, parece rir de si mesmo quando faz rir das pessoas, relacionamentos e instituições (como o casamento) que ele ridiculariza e põe a nu nas letras dele.
Inteligência, inconformismo, ironia, performance com poder e singularismo além do carisma, esse é Trevor Tanner. Muito bom ver que há tantos compatriotas comentando inteligentemente nesse video de puro bom gosto.

I saw this band live when I was 17. There were two other bands. But I bought their CD Friends. But overall best ever concert. The Lucy Show played and Love And Rockets headline.

Essa banda é muito boa, o travor era um frontman fantástico, o cara tinha um vocal icônico e um carisma sem igual. Sou mega fã dos Bolshoi.

*WOAH.* Stumbled on this via Peter Murphy vid....I used to be a huge Bolshoi fan. Thought I was "all that" because I'd discovered this great obscure band no one had ever heard of (or else my friends were all just lame). Pretty sure I still have a Bolshoi cassette tape! At the time, they were similar to _the original_ incarnation of Ministry during "With Sympathy" days, along with the Blow Monkeys and other "new wave" groups. Good times...

I used to go see a cover band that played this to open every gig. I had no idea who the Bolshoi were, as local radio didn't play such things. If you didn't see it on MTV, it might as well not have existed. It's too bad the Internet wasn't in full bloom then.

Their song Holiday by the Sea has less than 10,000 listens to on Spotify & is one of the best alternative rock songs of all time in my opinion & probably the most underrated song in existence.

Unfortunately not one of the more popular bands of the 80's. Everyone remembers Duran Duran, Culture Club etc but not many people remember these guys. A fantastic band from the 80's when Britain ruled the airwaves and were churning out great music.
Still my FAVORITE time for music. I miss this era so much. It gave me high hopes for future music. Those hopes were obviously dashed 😉
+Berlin Saint Clair :0) Sometimes I feel like I'm one of the only ones complaining about the shitty state of current music (there are exceptions.. but overall.. sad bubble-gum twerking shallowness to the right.. upset shallow crappy-rappy to the left.. ). And I don't think it's just age, I really think something went horribly wrong.. then again where do you go after Eurythmics, BauHaus, The Cure etc etc etc etc etc. The only way was down ?!

Was lucky enough to see these guys live back in the 80s at Rock City - Nottingham supporting 'spear of destiny' - bought the album still got it, shame they didn't make it bigger as such a great sound.

This is example number one of thousands of how good the music was in the eighties. NO one knew who these guys were back when, so many brilliants bands played, came and went with narry a blip.
I had this on a crappy old TDK tape when I was a teenage goth in '97 (in Argentina), and I swear this is the first time in my life I see this clip. My 16 yr old self is at peace with the world
