While many of us grew up thinking of it as a healthy staple, I'm here to break down why it's really more of a dessert! I'll also share insights into the fruit juice industry and the role marketing plays in shaping our perceptions. So, if you're ready to get the real scoop on your morning OJ and learn how to make smarter choices for your energy and health, this episode is for you!

    I love the way Dr. Robert Lustig put it (paraphrase): "When nature packages sugar, it always packages it with the antidote - fiber." We are the only creatures in the world, in our total lack of wisdom, that decides to minimize or completely discard the antidote and maximize the thing that will slowly poison us - sugar.

    • @Hertz2laugh
      @Hertz2laugh Před 15 dny +5

      Fiber is not an antidote, it is a plug.
      Fiber literally covers your intestines so that they can't absorb nutrients very well.
      That isn't a good thing.
      Yeah, it blocks some of the sugar absorption buy it also blocks everything else including vitamins and minerals.
      It's the most ridiculous take to say that fiber is an antidote for anything.
      Fiber does harm to humans by reducing their ability to absorb nutrients from the food they eat.
      It's like saying that sealing a plastic bag over your head is an antidote for air pollution...

    • @alphacause
      @alphacause Před 15 dny +2

      @@Hertz2laugh You are correct, that fiber does act like an antinutrient. I personally don't subscribe to the notion that we need fiber. However, in a nation hellbent on maintaining a sugar addiction, if they are going to consume copious amounts of sugar, at least fiber acts as a prophylactic.

    Hi Jessie and thank you. I love orange juice but have been cautious of the sugar pile dissolved within it for some time. I drink one cup of coffee with sugar, once a day, well after my savory breakfast. Then I only drink water, regular and sparkling. A few times a week I will mix the sparkling with fresh lemon and some orange juice. Then in the afternoon switch to just water again. Get my little fix, highly diluted, well before bedtime. No spikes. Happy mitochondria. ❤️

    I used to work outside under the hot sun. I would drink soda and sugary drinks to "stay hydrated". I would get headaches and be thirsty even though I was tired of drinking too much water. Once I removed the sugary drinks and started eating fruit, drinking real fruit juice, my headaches vanished, i felt hydrated. I hear so many experts saying this food is "good", this food is "bad". Before believing them, I test whatever they say to confirm whether or not what they say is true. I have no issue with real fruit juice, but I understand other people might. Each person has to find out what works for them.

    If the sugar is the same everywhere then how come we have different GI on products with the same amount of sugar?

  • @contemporaryclassicalguita8355

    An incredible thank you for your time and knowledge. I expect you're too busy to answer my question but I'll ask it anyway in case I'm one of the lucky ones to be answered. Little confused. I've heard others say even starchy vegetables are okay to eat in any amount because they have the necessary fiber to slow down the glucose level. Can you please clarify your method for eating starchy vegetables with vinegar beforehand. Thank you Laird

    After 20+ yrs of not drinking any juices, I have reintroduced half a cup of cold press OJ or pineapple in the morn after my bkfst. I am not talking about garbage pasteurized juice or shelf stable concentrate. Its not apple to apples. It actually makes me feel a lot better than the morning coffee I was drinking which would make me feel like crap by the afternoon.

    Loved this episode.
    I have been following some of her instructions like starting my meal with veggies, occasionally I drink vinegar before the meal and combining sugar-dense desserts with protein source like walnuts. I lost 5kg in a month :) and I do not feel hungry at all.
    The only side effect I have been experiencing is lethargy. I want to sleep for 10-11h, I get tired easily and basically want to go to bed all the time except morning hours.
    I believe this is the adaptation of my brain to low blood sugar levels. Just curious, is this diet eventually ketogenic? and since my sugar intake is lower but still not as low as in ketogenic diets, will my body and brain finally find their way to metabolism that will boost my energy, not the other way around?
    Happy to receive scientific articles regarding what happens in such scenarios :)

    Hello, I thought that the sucrose in cola is a table sugar, this is a disaccharide made up of one molecule each of glucose and fructose bound together. In contrast, oranges contain more fructose, which is absorbed by the enterocytes and metabolised independently of insulin. It reaches the liver via the portal vein, where it is broken down via fructose-1-phosphate and glyceraldehyde to glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate and dihydroxyacetone phosphate. Excesses are stored in the liver and muscles in the form of glycogen, which can be converted back into glucose when needed. Only when the glycogen stores are full is the excess glucose converted into fat and stored in the fat cells. No insulin is required to break down fructose, which means that blood sugar levels are barely affected. Fructose is metabolised independently of insulin and has a low glycemic index (GI) of just 22, and therefore barely affects blood sugar levels. (The GI of glucose, on the other hand, is 100.) Then the question arises: why is the glycemia peak so high? Do manufacturers add extra sugar to orange juice?

      Colas and other softdrinks are increasingly using HFCS.
      I think Coke completely switched over to HFCS back in the mid 80's.

    Jessica's comments on fruit juices and fruit growing are really good. First, most of the fruit juices are real sugar bombs, and secondly, nowadays fruit (and also vegetable growing) hast nothing to do with natural conditions. They must be big, in perfect shape, seedless, as sweet as possible, long enduring, spotless and so on. That's kind of sick, particularly, when you have once been to the tropics and have seen fruits or vegetables in a natural environment. They may often appear not so perfect as you may expect, but in many cases they are much more tasty than the ones cultivated in huge farms. By the way, I like Jessica's presentations very much, also due to her fantastic appearance. Heinz, 64, MD, GER

    I truly love learning this 🤯 mind blowing information. If you add vegetables to the juice, does it make it better? Is it contraindicated? If you don’t mind unsolicited advise, I suggest making your videos more upbeat, faster, more dynamic. It would help! Thank you for the info!

    Great educational video, thanks. One point of clarification. The AHA’s recommended upper limit of sugar you mentioned (25g for males and 36g for females) is for ADDED sugar and not all sugar eg in fruits.

      Free sugar as in juice also technically counts as added sugar. It's the whole point.

    To put it more succinctly, juice is highly processed fruit, and one of the principal features of highly processed foods is the absence of fiber. As Robert Lustig. says." feed your gut (that's the fiber) and protect the liver(avoiding fructose, which is glucose's evil twin, and which, in excess. results in fatty liver and thus insulin resistance")"

    Hi there, love this video.
    Finally, someone is talking about it. I have a question, though: what about celery juice? Everyone is now obsessed with it, and I was trying to find information about it, but I wasn’t able to figure out if it’s better to just eat normal celery as a veggie or if I have to invest in a juicer. Currently, I’m making my smoothie with cucumber, spinach, celery, ginger, lemon, and apple. My concern is the apple because it’s a fruit and there should be a spike after having it, but on the other hand, veggies should decrease it. Right?
    Looking for your advice
    Thanks!! 😊
