Three Ways to Use a 2nd Flash | Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey

  • A single flash is a great place to learn how flash works but a time will come when you really need a second flash to achieve the lighting look you’re aiming for. Using two flashes also opens up a whole new world of lighting possibilities and in this video portrait photographer, Gavin Hoey shares three ways to use two lights, with one background.
    Working against a dark background Gavin’s first use of a second light is the lift his model away from the black background by using a hair light or separation light as it's also called.
    The second use of a second flash is as a simple background light and so Gavin takes it up a notch and uses a fast lens with a shallow depth of field. To make that work both Flashpoint flashes are set up for HSS or high-speed sync flash photography.
    Finally, Gavin adds a wash of color by placing a blue gel on his second flash while the key light still has the standard white light. The result is a subtle blue-toned portrait with a splash of natural skin tones breaking through.

    I have learned so, so much from Gavin Hoey. You can add the names of Mark Wallace and Daniel Norton to that list. Oh, I can't forget Ask David Bergman. Those quick tips are great for when I am in a hurry and need to reference a technique really quickly. Before the pandemic I would travel on the NYC subway from Westchester to Adorama to see and hear Daniel and his team. Boy, things have changed. So happy Adorama can still provide learning tutorials via CZcams to keep photographers on their toes learning new techniques to keep our skill sets up to date or refresh our memories. Thanks Everyone!

    Thanks again Gavin for an excellent tutorial. Winter time means more indoor shooting, and it is really great to re-visit your tutorials online - it really boosts the enthusiasm and motivation.
    I appreciate you shearing your settings with us when showing the pictures you take as you go. However, I wonder if the flash settings you have written for the two first methods are mixed up. You say that the key light is set to f/8 and the separation light is two stops less, i.e. at f/4. When showing the details (at approx 3:20) you write "Key light 1/8" and "2nd Light 1/4". I assume these are in fact f/8 and f/4. What makes is a bit confusing is that for your third option (at approx 5:10) you write that "Key Light 1/16" and "2nd light 1/32" and you measure the 2nd light to f/8.
    I am guessing that for the two first methods you are on 1/16 power for the key light (assuming you kept this on the same power throughout the shoot), whereas the second light is powered at 1/64.
    I also have a question; Where can I find the calendar for your live events?

    I am a bit confused on the reason you used high speed sync. I understand going to a larger aperture to blur the background, but shouldn't you still get a black frame at the larger aperture with the shutter speed at 1/200th? I thought the shutter speed controls the ambient light.

    • @GavinHoey
      @GavinHoey Před 2 lety +1

      Hi John. Unfortunately "Shutter speed controls ambient light, aperture controls flash" is one of those unhelpful and misleading things that is in common circulation.
      If I open the aperture to f/1.4 my camera will record lots of ambient light (flash or no flash). To remove that uncontrolled light I could... Lower my ISO, add an ND filter to the lens, turn the room lights off or increase my shutter speed and use HSS flash. Over the years I've done them all and probably made a video about it 👍

    What are the two devices you are using to meter your lights?

    • @GavinHoey
      @GavinHoey Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Judith. I use a Sekonic L-308s flash meter to measure the light and a Flashpoint transmitter to trigger the flash. You'll find links in the video description for more details.

    7:00 wait so is that a CTB/blue gel as described? It looks like just a teal gel lol. Why not just say it's a teal gel? Because CTB and teal gels are COMPLETELY different things.

    Switching to HSS to open aperture from F:8 to F:4 using those flashes is really not needed and will harm the flashes in the long run.
    If you were at 1:2 power, to „lose” 2 stops just go to 1:8 power :-)

    • @GavinHoey
      @GavinHoey Před 2 lety

      Hi Radu. I think you may have misread / miss heard me... f/8 to f/1.4 (not f/4.0) That a LOT more than two stops 😉

    • @RaduGrozescu
      @RaduGrozescu Před 2 lety

      @@GavinHoey Right, from F:8.0 to 1.4 are 5 stops and the flashes you were using have 9 stops adjustment from 1:1 to 1:256.
      If someone is at 1:8 power at F:8 at F:1.4 will be at 1:256 power.

    • @GavinHoey

      @@RaduGrozescu What you're overlooking is the ambient light. By opening up the aperture by 5 stops I'd no longer be in control of the light and would capture a mix of flash and ambient light. Increasing my shutter speed with HSS flash gives me back control. I could have also used an ND filter or simply turned off the room lights... but that would make for a very dark video 😉

    • @GavinHoey
      @GavinHoey Před 2 lety +2

      That's not an iPad, it's not an android tablet either. That's my Lenovo Miix 2 in 1 laptop / tablet. As it's a Windows 10 device it runs any standard tethering software, in this case Olympus Capture, and connects via a TetherTool USB-2 active extension cable.
