I love how adding a separation light also changed the color of the models dress!
I'd like to say it was a clever use of gels...
Ed, I've watched a few of your videos, and you're an absolutely superb tutor. Your presentations are well organized, clear, and cover topics thoroughly. We learners appreciate you!
And props to you for not complicating stuff with technical terms and expensive flashes, light stands, softboxes, umbrellas and whatnot. Amazing piece of content. Straight to the point and lots to take away from this ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Your content is gold. I love that you know how to get great results using the same umbrella and flash I have.
This is the first video of yours I've seen. I like your no nonsense and getting straight to the point. You covered many examples in 10 minutes. Thank you.
You're an amazing instructor. So much content in a 10 minute video that is so easy to follow.
After all these years and I keep returning to your books and video. Thank you for the great content!

This is a very nice video. You have demonstrated use of two Speedlights to create different effects in just over 10 mimutes. Thanks for sharing !
Great info! Thank you for sharing these tips 👍🏼👍🏼
Wow... again! I have to say. I watch hundreds of videos on photography just filling myself up with as much info and education as I can. So, again, I REALLY like your style Ed. Straight to the point, simple, REAL, there is no "Bla bla bla..." going on AT ALL! You go STRAIGHT to the point, show amazing examples and get it done. VERY nice! Thank you again. I like how just in a few seconds you describe WHY you would use the lighting set up in a way that you show. THAT's important to me. A lot to people will explain it all but they don't tell you "why" or "when" you would use a certain technique. Thank you again Ed! Keep em coming!
loved it. You're a really good teacher.
Really well explained.
So very helpful. We’ll spoken and said, you’re a master sir thank you 🙏
Simple adequate and no nonsense! Ed is King like always
Aww, thank you :)
I learned a ton from this video.
Very informative without edited images shown. Keep it up!! Tnx
thanks for the effort and the sharing. thumbs up.
This is IT in a nutshell! Great video Ed. I have collected so many videos that force me to over analyze, but this is really to the point. I have a similar sized main light modifyer (deep dish parabolic 36") I just noticed that since you're putting it fairly high up and pointing downward (which is mimicking the natural sun's position), that i really don't need a larger one for full body portraits because it is close to the subject yet covering her due to it's angle, not it's distance away.
Amazing tutorial! Thank you so much
giving me inspiration. Thx!!!
Ed Verosky

Great! Thank you for the good tips...
Thanks Great info!
Hi Ed, Thank You so much for these Video's. This one is really a good one for me to learn from, it covers a lot of questions I have as I try to advance from one light to two or more. Currently I use a black back ground, and th separation explanation is very good one to help me understand this concept. I have watched a lot of Your Video's & some of them more than once. You're the man when it comes to teaching Portrait Photography. Really appreciate Your imparting Your knowledge to us. Otherwise I would be in the dark on learning & enjoying my small Home studio. Thanks very much.
Excellent!!! Thank you.
I don’t know anyone who makes lighting 'real' as good as you do. You have a phenomenal ability to take all these styles and techniques of lighting and making them so easy to understand. Even when discussing the complex theories of light you make it simple and yet you never patronise your viewer. It always feels like you are having a one to one conversation with your viewer.
Then you do it all with very real gear, speedlights and Godox lights, kit many of us have or can afford. No Profoto or Broncolor, no massively expensive modifiers, but stuff those of us with an basic studio setup will have or recognise. I don’t resent anyone having success and reinvesting that success into gear, but it’s also good to see someone with a "this is all I need" attitude.
I think it’s this ability to communicate, whether it’s teaching or debating that makes your channel compulsory viewing...that and the fact you come across as one of the good guys on CZcams.
It's fun to watch the guys with the high-end gear do their thing, but I agree, we've got to show how the rest of us can do it. Thanks so much for your encouraging comments, Mark. I hope you're doing well.
Ed Verosky I agree it’s fun watching those with top gear such as lights and Hasselblads, and there’s some great photographers who have earned that gear. However, I’m sure how that translates for the person who have just got their first 'real' camera and wants to learn how to use artificial lighting. Your tutorials make sense for that newbie right through to professionals.
I’m really good at the moment thanks Ed, hope you are too.
Soooo.... you WOULDN'T spend $800 on a 76Ws Profoto speedlight?
Chuck L Definitely not, when spending that sort of money I have to ask myself do I really want or need to? I shoot mainly landscape and wildlife and only set up a studio when I'm not well enough to go out. I never, under any circumstances photograph people, except my grandchildren and headshots for the charity I give all my digital prints to. Even then the grandchildren aren’t posed studio shots, but taken on days out etc. So my only reason to buy them would be to say I have them and they wouldn’t bring anything to my photography.
If I was a high end fashion or wedding photographer travelling light, I can certainly see a reason and value for using them there. Even if you’re an amateur who wants that "perfect" light I can see value in the investment. My studio work is still life taken for my own amusement. I don’t set my studio up more than a few times a year, as my health is deteriorating and the lad who used to do the physical setting it up has moved on, it’s getting fewer and fewer. I’d rather spend that sort of money on a couple of PE lenses for my Bronica. Artificial light does fascinate me, especially when there’s people like Ed to lead the way. However, I much prefer my wildlife and landscapes photography and would rather make that level of investment there. Or better still, buy myself a couple of decent enlargers to replace my 35mm B&W one I have now, I could definitely find value there.
Superb! I only have two strobes and was thinking about getting a clamshell reflector but based on this video I don't need it anymore! I will use my lantern light as the "clamshell for the same effect!
Nicely Explained. Love the way you narrate each technique. Thank you very much.

Excelente video, absolutamente instructivo. Muchisimas gracias!
Gracias! 🙏🏽
Love the way u teach ... keep up the good work
Aww, thanks 🙏🏽
Thanks a lot, Ed. I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge about flash photography. Your explanation is straightforward, and the demo is very clear. The set up is relatively simple, the cost, low. The two flashes achieve do a lot. You give plenty of very good examples.
I usually use one flash as the key light. The 2nd light is placed behind the subject, with or without gel. I place a reflector in front of the subject to reduce shadows. It works pretty well. I believe I learned this from one of your earlier vids. Very helpful. Thanks again.
I appreciate that! Thanks 🙏🏽
Super helpful 💪
Glad it was helpful!
Good video thank you
Fantastic video. I'm really tempted to buy a second strobe now
I got strobes for days son
loving your presentation.
you mention (at the point of emphasizing physiques) to 'experiment until you get the look that you want". this is my conundrum. i dont KNOW what look i want.
i havent got a style of my own and not sure i have the imagination to come up with one...
Just play and you’ll find looks that you like. Your style just shows itself somewhere down the line. It’s not something you make, it’s something that you notice after awhile.
Thank ou very much
❤️❤️❤️
This is an incredibly informative and easy to follow video. I saved it to my photography playlist. Thank you. Can I get the same red background effect if I simply buy the Nikon red gels for my SB-700 speed light?
Hey thank you so much ..your tutorials are amazing and easy to understand and follow along...just bought couple of godox strobes images are deep brown and hot do you customize WB in camera or use a black and white card in one of the images?
Please tell us more set up s by two lights . I want to learn more complicated pattern.
holy cow... you look exactly like shekhar suman :D
BTW brilliant tip, thanks :)
Plz make video tutorial on contrast ratio of key and fill light.
Very nice video ! Lot of learning for a beginner photographer like me.
I request you to make a video on how to avoid reflection of light in the Glasses while clicking a portrait of a person wearing Glasses, if you haven't already made one.
If already made a video on the requested subject then please share the link for the same.
fantastic job, subscribed :-)
Thanks so much, Rene 😊
Ed, thank you for your video. Did you use TTL or manual lightning? If in TTL, did you use two groups ? For every flash one group?
Nice one bro
Thanks so much, Benjamin. :)
