I love that through the course of the books the characters, not just Harry, all grow and change, getting stronger and stronger in a realistic way, as the stakes get higher and higher. There is never a "training montage" or "mystery potion" that gives a massive undeserved power boost. It's more like, they spend a book finding a mystery and 2 books later they find that the mystery actually sets a chain of actions in motion that 2 books later resolve in an ally teaching Dresden a trick that 2 books later becomes a weapon or a tool Dresden can actually use every now and again. I love seeing character going from small and innocent but curious and smart to adult independent and reliable, or from just your average un-assuming kind of wimpy but likable human, growing into this bad ass demi angel warrior having threesomes with werewolves xD. I know it's crazy (and the series is not the monkey male fantasy all the time) but there is just something soo cool to see character you like get stronger and stronger and defeating foes you only heard about being whispered at 10 books before.
I think the world develops so well, that you end up even liking some of the recurring villains, so much so that when the story goes into a different direction and then like a year later when the story goes back to normal and Harry is chatting with a villain and they casually comment how he has been fighting one of Dresden's allies this whole time and the ally is now actually a dependable person instead of the jackass we know we kind of get "oh wow, I wonder what happened to make him change and grow" and then we actually eventually have a time to talk to that side character and he has all this complex things going on in his life because the world is not just about the main character and is alive and grows with him. That's how you end up feeling the world is real and the characters are likable.

    • @usxxgrant
      @usxxgrant Před rokem +1

I agree. The series is the best example I've found of a character ( and his companions, and enemies, and his obstacles ) leveling up over the course of the series, and done in such a way that it really feels reasonable. Also Jim has thus far kept from making Harry become over powered compared to his foes.
I highly recommend the series to anyone that will listen to me.

Word of warning: the first 2-3 books are the worst of the series. The great part about that is that almost every book is better than the previous one. But on the other hand, it will absolutely scare people away too soon. My advice: If you think the first books are good or okay: keep reading. If you absolutely hate book 1 or still don't like it after book 3, I think it's better to stop. If you're on the fence and are still not convinced by Dead Beat, then this series will never convince you.

I felt bad for Glove with Ghost Story. I’ve had some fave series that had a stand in narrator before that turned out to be horrifically jarring. The Hollows, for example. The stand in pitched voices high that were usually low. Pitched voices low that were usually high. And her pronunciations were so far off some of the names were almost unrecognizable.
Glover clearly either is a fan who had listened to the previous books or did his homework. His diction, cadence and pronunciation were all spot on. It was just the voice that was different. He did an excellent job.

@@haydensellers2649 Yes. And technically there are two different versions of it (both written by persons in the setting). The first which is based on an older version of FATE, is called Dresden Files RPG. It has 3 books: Your story (main rulebook), Our world (writeups of a lot of characters from the series), The Paranet Papers (alternative setting and more empowered versions of some characters). The first two are supposed to be written by Billy with lots of discussions between him, Harry and Bob which manifests as scribbles in the margin, post it notes etc. Paranet Papers is written later, and is then written by Billy, Waldo Butters and Karrin Murphy, and also have such baneter between them, and basically takes place after the events of the book Changes. The first two are out of print, but can be bought as pdf's. Not quite sure about the status of the last one, think it might still eb in print, but otherwise also availible as pdf's. The second version is called Dresden Files Accelerated, and it uses a newer, and simplified version of the rules. That one is suposed to be written by Ivy...

I recently used the Dresden files to introduce my wife to fantasy lit. It worked. She was immediately addicted, forcing me to buy all 17 of the novels so that she can read them all in order of publication.
She says she isn't interested in the short stories. However, I am feel pretty certain that when she finishes Battle Ground, she will be chasing me out the door to get the short story collections.

I discovered the audiobooks a year ago and when I say discovered, I mean it. In Germany it is like this series never existed, you don't find it in book stores and nobody has ever heard about it. The rights of the German translations belong to a company that has went bankrupt I think so there's that.
Long story short: Everytime I'm in a bigger bookstore I ask if they've got some Dresden files books and when I hear the inevitable 'no' I'm giving them my 'I thought you where a bookstore'-face. Some day it'll work 😅

Malazan is a different style of writing ... it has great world building and story lines, but you just don't get invested in the characters like you do for Song of Ice & Fire or Brandon Sanderson's works.
If you can appreciate that style of writing, I suggest that you stick it out. I don't know that I would ever re-read them, but I do not regret reading them through once.

@@ValhallaAMV I hear you, but that's the thing that bothers me the most. We keep making these stories where heroes have these slave-friends and people are ok with it. I'm ready for a more progressive imagination. I think that the new Battlestar Galactica series finally got it right. Humans generated an artificially intelligent species and enslaved them. The subsequent war was epic... and justified.

Bob The Skull is not a human. He's a Spirit of Air. The skull is his home. Whoever (anybody) holds his skull is his master. Those are "the rules", in the Nevernever/ Fairy sense.
The "slave" quip is just tgat, a quip. Bob The Skull has never been human or alive the way people are. It would be better to describe him as a lecherous, pithy, whiny Super Artificial Intelligence.
Edit: IIRC nobody in the books calls Bob a slave unless they are *sorely* mistaken about what Bob is.

Warning for Chicago readers: If you're from Chicago, give Jim a few books to get to know the city. He got a lot of grief from Chicagoans for talking about midtown Chicago, although in fairness there is both a Midtown Athletic Club and a Hotel at Midtown. Later he refers to the area as Bucktown, which is actually on the map as an area, but growing up in Budlong Woods in the 1960s I never heard anyone mention Bucktown either. :-D
