      To me, once you break your leg, you're never going to be the same player. Overcoming a tibia and fibula fracture and return to star status was actually so unlikely, that Gordon Hayward would frequently call Paul George for guidance on his lesser injury.
      PG13 was a high-risk, high-reward player, but to pair him with another injury-plagued star like Kawhi Leonard was the driving force behind the L.A. Clippers trying to acquire Russell Westbrook, who is historically one of the healthiest players in the league. Unfortunately, it didn't happen until 2023, far too late for this aging trio to pool their collective strength enough to stave off Father Time. 🏀

    It's easy to talk about it in hindsight, but think back to the 2019 offseason. If you were given the opportunity to trade for Paul George, who had just averaged 28 PPG, 8.2 RPG, 4.1 APG, along with the guarantee that the reigning NBA Finals MVP, Kawhi Leonard, would sign with your team once you completed the trade, why not?
    SGA, the center piece of the trade, was coming off his rookie season averaging 10.8 PPG, 2.8 RPG, and 3.3 APG. Of course, the five first-round picks and two first-round pick swaps given up were going to hurt in the long run, but if you're getting both Kawhi and PG, it's a win-now move, no?
    Obviously we can look back at it now and laugh about how injuries derailed the Kawhi-PG era while SGA slipped through their hands and blossomed into a potential MVP, but I'd say the move made sense at the time. For the record, I don't support the Clippers and absolutely cheered when they blew a 3-1 lead to Denver in 2020, but the amount of revisionism about their 2019 offseason is crazy.

    What people don’t understand that makes this trade one of the worst ever is that Shai is not only better than PG at this current moment, but this past season he already had a better season than Paul George has ever had. Yes the MVPG season was a great season, but it would not have netted him a top 3 finish in this past seasons MVP race in a league where 7 different players averaged 30 a game. Even with all that being said, Shai is still 24 (will be 25 in less than a week) and the Clippers still owe OKC two more unprotected firsts and a pick swap after already gifting them J-Dub.

He was pretty close to 2 steals a game (1.6) and also averaged a block a game which Paul George has never come close to. PG was probably a better defender in his prime, but that not-too-big gap defensively does not make up for Shai scoring more points per game on like basically the same amount of shots per game and on significantly better efficiency. How can ANY organization allow ANY player to force a deal? It is the job of the front office and not a player to handle the business element of the team.
    Clippers lose because they allowed a player control of business operations AND they allow the player to put them in a bind to give up a HUGE amount of primo picks.
    OKC wins for being lucky to have the player KL was after and being smart to demand a HUGE amount of priority picks. SGA was only a prospect=OKC can only hope he can be a nice addition but does not care when 6 top tier picks is what they were after. 6 picks like this is tremendous leverage in the drafts or in picking up top players that become available etc.

    • @michaelstrode8924
      @michaelstrode8924 Před 5 měsíci

      I thought they got 6 but read that they got 7 picks/swaps. Regardless. More than 2 or 3 picks was an overpay if the Clippers front office was in charge.

    This looked great for the clippers in the moment, it just didn’t work out. I’m sure everyone here would’ve made that trade too. Kawhi had just won in Toronto, in only one season mind you. Paul George had just had an mvp caliber season. Sure you’re trading away your future, but this looked like a guaranteed championship. Don’t forget people were saying this would be the best wing duo since Jordan and pippen.

    • @vomitingforever5392
      @vomitingforever5392 Před 11 měsíci

      And put yourself in the mind of the clippers. Kawhi spent one year in Toronto and they won the championship, so why wouldn’t he be about to do that here? Especially with Paul George next to him. And they’re living in the shadow of the Lakers, who had just got AD like a month prior to this trade. AD was supposed to be the guy to take over after Lebron gets old and help make the team stay a contender after Lebron retires (that’s not gonna pan out either) so the clippers needed to make a big move

  • @dominic64tblightning24
    @dominic64tblightning24 Před 11 měsíci

    It's not that bad, the Clips are still contenders. Obviously Shai is a loss. Remember, without the trade they never get Kawhi either. Playoff disappointments don't change the fact that the trade did vault them into contender status.

All time backfire since not only have they not won anything of note but the team they tried screw over won the title that season over the team that embarrassed the Clippers 3-1. So the immediate and future results both sucked for LAC. Doesn’t look much better now either.
