This is the first time in 16 years that a new line of speakers from Cerwin-Vega has been developed with all three brands being under the same roof (Mobile, Home, and Pro). Great product.
Double flared ports, double layer front baffle, not just a square box but som round sweetness, soldered leads and red rubber surround and Fs at 30 Hz. Absolutely a great build for the price.
Not the strongest amp or driver, but a good box is a great start.
Here's hoping they didnt mess it up. :)
The cabinet is a great base to start from if you like to DIY and tinker! I installed my Martin Logan Dynamo 700 subwoofer in this cabinet and was surprised by the improvement. Total Q with the Martin Logan driver was cut in half and is just under .6, and port tuning came in at 21Hz from 35Hz.That's not bad considering I only paid $45 for this driver on eBay and I haven't even began to mess around with port tuning or damping. No doubt the amp is the weak point in this setup, but that's pretty typical at this price point.

@@OlaJustin Hi Justin! I did that with my Klipsch and JBL subwoofer upgrade videos series. Have you seen them? In the later video parts I go into the details of why this particular driver I chose worked well with this setup. I even go into port tuning as well. I think it got too technical because the series didn't get a lot of views, but I did try to explain it in a way where anyone could understand it.

Absolutely, but no foam port blockers were included.
Would you be so kind to check if that 15 pin IC seen from 4:40 (with neighborhooding speaker connector) is an TDA7294? If so, you were almost right your power estimation. Assuming that speaker impedance is 4 Ohms, power supply at idle is about +/-30V, and IC is TDA7294 (or similar), output power is up to 100W, but wit unacteptable THD level equal to 10%.
That is what I was thinking as soon as I had seen the chip package and wattage output.
@@DavidSmith-dm8ew Problem is that TDA7294 is a really old AMP. Old, bud properly used generates at least good quality sound. Around 20 years ago I used this IC as a sub driver in my DIY home theatre system. And for this job TDA7294, even powered by SMPS, is more than sufficient :)
Hello, sadly I can't read the numbers on the amplifier IC that Cerwin-Vega is using, but you might be right. As stated in the video, the subwoofer driver that Cerwin Vega is using has an impedance of 4 ohms. I appreciate the comment. It sounds like you know your stuff with circuit design. It's very cool to see comments like this!
PS: I was going to measure continuous power on this amplifier but my newly purchased o-scope is down and is in for service. Maybe when I get it back I can do a separate video on measuring continuous power of this amplifier.
If it is a Class A/B amp, then it has a very small heat sink. The finned heat sink appears to be part of the power supply? The multi-pinned device close to control pots looks like an output chip; like possibly Texas Instruments? There appears to be two transformers - the small one may be a standby power supply?
I hear you, Neil! Sadly Cerwin-Vega doesn't offer a whole lot of info on these amplifiers so I had to speculate. I'm still waiting to hear back from Cerwin-Vega on a couple of a questions that I had regarding this amplifier. Hopefully they respond before my review video comes out. My guess is as a new unified company (all three brands under the same roof again) that they're still working things out. I wish them the best, but they really need to start including better information and specifications on their products. IMO they are headed in the right direction, they just need to fine tune the process a bit more.

That is weird. I think you're the only person having this problem otherwise I would be getting a lot more complaints. I just re-watched the video and everything is displaying fine for me.

It appears that they put most of the cost into the cabinet which is good. I wonder if swapping out the driver for a better one would light that thing up.
@100w, a different driver isn't going to light up much. Given the current woofer, I would definitely plug the ports and run it sealed.

@joesshows6793 The only thing that's nice is the cabinet. That driver is probably 1/2 decent, but another guy here said he replaced his with a Martin Logan Dynamo sub from ebay and was impressed with the upgrade. My statement is more towards the fact 100w RMS will only do so much when it comes to driving subs. I'm sure that Matin Logan was an upgrade, but for it to "light that thing up" you need more power. $400 is stupid money for a 100w sub. There are so many offerings at 250w+ at this price point or less.
Hi Joe, the cabinet is well above average for this price point and is screaming for an driver/amp upgrade. The factory Cerwin Vega driver is pretty average and IMO the amplifier is below average.
For fun I modeled the Martin Logan driver from my Klipsch R10SSW upgrade video series and it did very well in this cabinet. The problem is the factory amplifier doesn't have the power to push this driver to its full potential. I'm going to do another test with the factory Cerwin Vega driver installed, but this time giving it a proper amp. If the LA110 had more amplifier, then I think it would be a pretty good setup. I will go into this more in my review video.
What center channel is that?
Are you talking about at the end of the video? If so, that is a Bowers & Wilkins Panorama soundbar that I was testing.

@@tommyK7282 When I was in high school a friend of mine worked all summer to save up and purchase a pair of Cerwin Vega speakers. When he got them, we all came over and were drooling over them. The one thing I will never forget about them is how loud and clear they were.
Built to break👍 with cheap parts like everything else 😂 I'll stick with my vintage Vega speaker set and my made in Japan pioneer speaker destroyer 😊

I believe they are built at the same factory. Same with the LA165s which look just like the Victa Prime 300.
Better buy a grs 12" 4he and a dayton amp with dsp. And 50$ for MDF and painting.😅😅
Frequency response of 50-200hz (but port tuning is 35hz?...which is it??), if that's the case, why didn't they say that in specs?...that's not a sub...lol...you'll get really good midbass, but you're going to be completely missing the LFE in movies, which is the entire point of a home theater sub
Yeah, I don't understand it either, but based on my measurements this subwoofer had no problem hitting 30-35Hz. The driver alone has a resonant frequency of 30Hz and port tuning came in at 35Hz so that goes against what CV has included in their specs. I'm thinking they may have mixed up "frequency response" with the low pass crossover frequency? At the end of the day its still a budget 10" subwoofer so if earth shattering bass is your thing, then the budget will have to be increased, but its pretty decent for the money.
Something tells me that amplifier is not AB class, but D class.
It's a class A/B. I finally found it in the literature.

$400 for this 100w rms sub? The reliability isn't too great, either, based on the Amazon reviews. They're definitely overpricing these subs compared to what you can get for the same money or less.
I don't see any reviews for this sub on Amazon yet. I think the sub is too new to talk about reliability. The new LA series was released months ago, not years. I agree with you though, this subwoofer doesn't have quite the same value propositions as their LA165 bookshelf that I did a look inside video on, but its still pretty decent because of the cabinet.
Looks nice, but not something I'd pay $400 for.
The value proposition isn't as high as the LA165s that I reviewed a few months ago, but the cabinet in this thing is screaming for a better driver/amp combo. Maybe I'll do an upgrade video series on this subwoofer just like I did with Klipsch and JBL subwoofers?

The amplifier is rated at 86 watts, MAX. So not RMS. Probably 50 watts. You can get a better sub for less money. I am disappointed.. growing up with cerwin vega speakers. I'm looking for two subwoofers that are smaller than my monolith m10s, but have decent sound output and power.
Where are you finding the specs for this amplifier at? I can't find them anywhere and my oscilloscope is in for service so I can't bench test it at the moment. I will touch on some of your points in my review video which I should have out next month. I do agree that CV priced it too high and the amplifier definitely needs some improvement.

made in china thats sad ...i just got a pair of 39p with 12 inch woofers ..i did the foam on them now playing like new ...made in usa like my u15 two ways ...cv needs to bring it back home
I'm not aware of any subwoofers being made in the USA at this $399 price point. All of these budget subwoofers that I have touched are either made in China or Taiwan. If you know of any let me know and I'll review them.
