    Thoughts on the Real Time videos? Next up will be something more... "Teachy" with a voice over etc.

      I'm really enjoying the Real Time videos, also like the background music. I had this one playing a separate screen while working so I could look over and watch.
      Out of curiosity, is there a reason why you use that particular type of stone as a work surface, or would anything of similar weight/strength work just as well?

    • @DarkHorseWorkshop
      @DarkHorseWorkshop  Před 6 lety +2

      It's what Tandy sells, so I've always used it. Something similair will probably work.

      I enjoyed the real time a lot, thank you for sharing your work process with us!
      About the teachy stuff...some voice over or in the moment comments would be nice as a complement to the music...to much talk would be tiresome just as just music is to the ear after 3 hours ! =)
      Also...are you scandinavian? My name is Magnus as well (using my sons yt account atm), but I've never heard anyone from north america named Magnus, infact most americans have a hard time pronouncing it the first couple of times... Good name though, of old norse viking descent.
      Cheers/Magnus

I've been doing leather for several years and was looking for different motif to inject into my work.

    I really enjoy the real time footage, it makes it a lot easier to pick up on details. I would love to see some tutorials where you use real time for explaining each step, and then fast forward for the repetitive stuff. This video made me realize that I have been rushing some of the steps, because it is difficult to judge how fast things are done in a fast forward only tutorial.

    Just a question... as you have for sure guessed, I'm a total beginner in leatherworks/carving and I'll love to know if, for training using the swivel knife, I can use some alternative media, because the leather of the right thickness is awfully expensive (in italy) where I live. I don't know... something like linoleum, heavy cardbord...

    Fabulous work. Just a question - do you think it necessary to use a swivel knife after tracing on to the leather with stylus? Would I be wrong to say using the stylus is the same as using a stamp, as both leave a mark? The swivel knife is less forgiving if you make a mistake I find, so might impressions by stylus be safer, at least until the swivel knife is mastered? I'd like your opinion if possible.

    • @DarkHorseWorkshop
      @DarkHorseWorkshop  Před 5 lety

      Only way to master it is to do it and fail. Overcome any fears and do it until you get it down. Avoiding it is just delaying your improvement.

    I remember something in this style. Was it a sailor craft? My Great great Grandfather was a Capt. on a Danish Windjammer that brought citizens to Australia. Probably another great in there but maybe it was to the Goldrush in Victoria. Some of the books on Great Grandmother Dagma book shelves had these complex weaving. She said they were magic, so I’d trace my finger along the lines trying to follow to the end. Never did complete not once. “Time to say “Goodbye”. Knoppel was a famous name in our family here in Australia. Great Danish pride. My mother always said Viking pride. It’s about belonging and heritage.

      sascenturion I have an Epidemic Sound subscription to add music to my videos. I just search it for medieval... Viking.. Celtic.. Etc. And pull songs I like from it and fit them in.

    This makes me feel better about my life. I’m teaching myself and it takes soooo long.
    Also, can I burn and then tool the leather? The internet has failed me thus far.

    • @DarkHorseWorkshop
      @DarkHorseWorkshop  Před 4 lety

      I'd tool it, then add some burning if that's your thing. But burning is torching something you want to be nice and easy to stamp and cut. Counter Productive to carving it nicely.

      I actually had that thought as I was laying in bed obsessively researching methods. I’ll keep them separate for now until I have even the smallest amount of experience.
      Thank you for responding so quickly! I will probably be back with questions. Ha.

    You seem to pushing down pretty hard on the knife while your cutting, is that how you get more “fluid” cuts? My cuts seem to be blocky and choppy not smooth flowing. You do nice work!

      I've never thought of it like that, but you do want to get fairly deep in order to be able to get nice depth with your bevels. Just make sure your blade is both sharp, and polished up, and the casing/wetness on the leather is right.

      That is a ceramic blade that you're using, right? I've never had the opportunity to work with one; what are your thoughts comparing it to a classic steel blade? Of the ones I have, my hollow ground is my favorite, I seem to get the best results with it.

    • @DarkHorseWorkshop
      @DarkHorseWorkshop  Před 6 lety

      I had some poor results with a regular old steel blade, and never looked back after I started polishing a ceramic. I haven't tried a ton of different blades though since the fine ceramic has worked great so far.

    thank for sharing your work as an artist and your skill, that you have covered within this film on a truly organic medium, my best regards please show more in this vain too many use time-lapse and fast forward films missing a lot of the best points. William.

    One thing i noticed when you where etching the pattern to the leather is you kept bouncing around on it. Is there a particular reason for that or is that just the method to your madness
