- A while ago, a group of my viewers decided to host a design competition, in which the winner would have their design built by me. The catch being, I was not allowed a place a vote. Instead, my fate was placed in the hands of the judges.

đ”ïžââïž WHO AM I?:
My name is Matt Estlea, I'm a 25 year old Woodworker from Basingstoke in England and my aim is to make your woodworking less s***.
I come from 5 years tuition at Rycotewood Furniture Centre with a further 1 year working as an Artist in Residence at the Sylva Foundation, which is where I began growing my business. I then returned to Rycotewood to teach Evening Classes for 2 Years, while also teaching City and Guilds Furniture Making for 3 years. They were some long 12 hour days!
In September, 2021. I resigned from teaching at the school to focus on my own business.
In addition to all that studying and teaching during the week, I occupied my weekends working at Axminster Tools and Machinery in Basingstoke. For 5 years, I helped customers with purchasing tools, demonstrated in stores and events, and gained extensive knowledge about a variety of tools and brands. I discontinued this job role in 2019 to focus on teaching at Rycotewood and my own business.
During the week, I film woodworking projects, tutorials, reviews and a viewer favourite 'Tool Duel' where I compare two competitive manufacturers tools against one another to find out which is best. I also have a Free Online Woodworking School which you should definitely check out!

I like to have a laugh and my videos are quite fast paced BUT you will learn a lot, I assure you.
Lets go make a mess.

HuhâŠ.not a great idea to flush that OSB. Ideally you want it a mm or so proud to that when you catch your fingernail on it the splinters really get chance to penetrate. Otherwise nice work.
What I love about OSB is how the saw dust feels on my skin. I'm allergic to whatever they use as a binder in it. Stuff makes me feel like I'm on fire! So no matter how hot it is if I have to cut OSB it's long sleeves for me.
Evil, pure evil.
@@1pcfred Oof, that sounds painful
@@cvoges12 it can be. Fortunately OSB costs too much now for me to work with it anymore. It has gone up in price 10X over what it used to cost.
@@1pcfred Yeah, prices are crazy rn. It was like $1/ft of 2 by 4 here for a while
The first half of the czcams.com/users/postUgkx3ICSK6nSknaL_45CU2NmFSoXjarGMDiJ book is everything about wood: types, tools, finishes, setting up shop etc. The second half is all about doing projects for inside and outside of the home. The color pictures are helpful. After reading a dozen of these types of books, this is probably the best overall (layout, color photos, plans). Only detraction is that many of the projects use a table saw/router/planer, which are usually expensive and take up space, so the plans are less friendly to newcomers and the budget conscious. But I know I can use a drill, circular saw or a jigsaw to make the projects.
The fact he actually did this when he had no say in the competition and it wasnât even a competition started by him that in itself deserves a subscription and then his amazing skills deserve the like button
nah
@@jZamora87 itâs called being caring and compassionate
@@eejoker you're doing too much bro, this is the comments section, not the entrance to heaven. Go slobber on people you know in real life.
@@jZamora87 This is the comment section, not SmÄland for trolls.
I can't say that it "deserves a sub..." thereby. Based on the quality of teaching, material, and his personal appeal, I may well subscribe. Why look at that statement carefully? It sounded weird. Should we look at anything critically? Are we able to discern differences in concepts? The question deserves examination.
If there was someone who could make osb look good on a project like this. I expected it to look hideous, actually ended up looking almost like an inlay of cork or something and blended a lot better than I'd have imagined.
Historians in a hundred years won't understand why such a perfect box would have OSB as the centerpiece.
They'll wonder why it wasn't all made from osb, it will be recognised as the most expensive wood known too man đ€Ł
It made me see OSB in a different light and kind of liked it. I think he should have burned in My Little Pony in it.
In 2021 OSB shot up to $70 a sheet so it is a coveted luxury material these days.
@@chriss9340 ccd ccdccd z
The contrasting randomness of the OSB Inlay against the darker directional grains of the rest of the box... Beautiful!
It seems contrary to even think of, yet that minimalist addition of OSB actually kind of makes this stand out against other similar boxes.
I love that the OSB is a joke, but that the finished product shows that it really doesn't matter what you use if you're creative, skilled, and patient enough. It is actually a really cool look.
That's what I tell people when I sell them case hardened knives out of mild steel.
@someguyontheinternet dotcom it was just a joke I usually just use EN54 or D2 depending on whether or not I want to treat them a lot or a little.
D2 is harder than EN54 so EN54 requires more treatment to get the rockwell number to where it likes to be
I was holding my breath as Matt walked down the walkway, and hoping he wouldnât trip and drop the box.
Same haha, would have been hilarious if he used a prop box, drops it, camera pans down and it's just a pile of splinters and broken glass haha
@@whirled_peas I really wish they would have done that. I was quite nervous for that box though.
Idk why, the way they shot the video made me think he was going to drop it too.
I was so hoping you made a second "dummy" box so you could "accidentally" take a fall and drop it, but your ending was good to....lol awesome build!!
I was waiting for the moment of an "oops" fall at the end as well with a dumby box
@@Bluejsa1 Me too, and you know he was setting it up like that too. The wording and framing he used had a lot of foreshadowing.
8:49 "After much pondering, otherwise known as procrastination" this hits too close to home lol
There is a lot of talent on the interweb, but true craftpersons are rare. 10/10
11:57 "And that Officer, is why I burned down the house"
That is an impressive box, the highlight was definitely the handover to its very excited and proud new owner!!!
You should have made TWO boxes, one the âcommissionedâ one, and one where you built it the âright wayâ based on taking the design and improving it as you discussed and dismissed because you were building what you were commissioned to do.
If a burglar would find a box like this, he would carefully empty the box and take the box home.
*box filled with priceless watches* "screw the watches man, I want the box! Do you see the dovetails on those joints..."
@@mitcheld123 âLook at the short-grain frame! Risky move but beautiful.â *Proceeds to empty the box*
@@H0DAX1 âBro, they used plywood as a decorative finish on the front of it, some may say itâs tacky but damn does it tie the whole thing together!â
He would just grab both. A good box with free loot to pay for the trip.
Ok... I'd never have considered OSB on the front of something... but that is actually a pretty fun look as an accent to the rest of the box... which also seems like accents to eachother... so many accents...
There's so little of it that it's not as offensive as in standard uses, at least on the screen. Kinda looks like cork
Piece of art. Your camera man needs a raise
I have a hunch Matt would second that. He would like a bit more in the community chest.
How this guy doesn't have a million subscribers - I have no idea...
Cheers Alexander đ
i think the answer to that, is lack of videos. he's not active enough to get a huge following. if you look at other channels with more than a million followers most of them post regularly and often. the content is definitely good enough.
At this rate if he can make videos at least once a month he should be able to get to half a million pretty quickly
I know itâs a relatively small part of the video but the way the cuts were synced with the music was so satisfying to me
A lot of Matt's content is fun woodwork-related content, and then occasionally he drops something like this (or the woodwork school) to make everyone sit up and realise that he's actually an incredible craftsman not just a youtuber. Fantastic stuff!
I'm happy that craftsmen like this do youtube video's but very saddened at the same time that craftsmen like this are going youtube videos.
@@chrisanthony579 I am a craftsman like this and I am incredibly happy that Matt and many others are making these videos. It's causing a resurgence in our field which is undergoing a weird transition as young people have mostly turned to office or gig type jobs, not wanting to get their hands dirty. My own career is a result of some of these early videos and it's affected my life in many positive and surprising ways. Don't be sad! We need people to get inspired and interested and join our ranks. There's a shit ton of work to do.
@@ruben9912 I don't mean any disrespect to the folks that do the CZcams thing. Actually I learn a lot from many of these very talented people and the industry needs people to inspire. My point being that for many of these gifted craftsmen like Matt, its sad that there's much more money in making video's than actually crafting and trying to make a living in woodworking. Those talented people that try to make a living working wood are making cabinets and book shelves. For the most part the market doesn't allow them to show their true talents.
This is why I don't understand people that say I must be patient because I work with hand tools. At least next time I know who I can point them to to find patience.
Well done, it really shows!
Matt, your channel and builds are incredible! So glad I stumbled on your channel today, itâs inspiring for my own builds and videos!!
Seriously man, your editing and story is superb.
The winning designer is definitely your "Lex Luther" type of fan. Your "Challenge Accepted" and deep thought at points means he really did challenge you. Turned out great. Even the OSB inlay looks great as an accent, and I really did not think it would. The jig to hold the top flat for assembly was a "next level" solution and it would have taken many of us much longer to do that jig. Your ingenuity has come a long way, young man. This is why I enjoy your channel, You help me think not only outside of the box, but around the corners as well. I can most assuredly learn something from channels like yours, Torbjorn's, Pask's, and many others. Thanks.
I like that you compared me to Lex Luther! Have to say watching the behind the scenes that Matt does made me feel guilty at the challenges I set him.
He said "I made a simple hold down jig...." Sir, that is a weekend project for me.
You're a quick worker Chris. Planning that would take ME a week. Back when I was a lad, we used to DREAM of making a jig over a weekend...
I was thinking the same thing. More time spent making jigs than building the thing.
Well, according to Ian N and Blue Wren I am an intermediate woodworker now :)
@@Raven.flight Luxury!
@@chriss9340 I don't even really know what a hold down jig is, so you've all made a lot of progress lmao
I can't believe Matt drove with the box in the front seat without a seatbelt. Scandalous. For the safety of our children, they belong in the back, strapped for life. Terrific video production, and a work of art by a very talented craftsman. Bravo.
Brother that is an absolutely beautiful piece! Other people make things that are nice, but I have such an appreciation for all those tiny pieces, short grain, intricate joinery, etc.. absolutely wonderful Matt!
That box is a freaking work of art! Always impressed by your abilities and thankful that you share them with all of us to enjoy.

This is the first video of yours I have seen, really cool! Will be subscribing.
Matt I am continually amazed at your know how about wood and jointing techniques. For such a young guy your knowledge is amazing. I have been woodworking since school in the 1960's (when they still taught that) and every one of your videos has increased my knowledge of the craft. Thank you.
I was half expecting you to drop the box at the end...
Nice piece!
Iâd have been pretty upset if he had! But it would have been on brand
He could have taken pictures of the real box, printed them and stuck them on a plain replica to shatter all over the ground, just for effect.
You're a mad man Matt! Insane project, very well done! I'm jealous of your skills!
I get litteral chills everytime i see a surface planer, i dropped my finger in once and it took my nail and some more off instantly
This must have been a greatest video Ive seen on youtube and such a nice gesture. Hands down youre beyond black belt.
The OSB gives it a lot of character. What an amazing piece of work.
Brilliant ! Great to see you back smiling and having fun đ. Thanks for sharing đ
Glad to see a genuine smile on you again!! Great build!!
Love the ending! Great upload! In fact, one of your best. Thanks!
Not only is the box impressive, but I noticed how good the audio editing is too! The mixing of the synths with the woodworking was a great choice
Stunning achievement Matt, BRAVO!!!
Haven't watched your stuff in about a year or more, holy shit you work has come along so much in a short period of time, well done
That is a gorgeous box, exceedingly well done.
Absolute craftsmen Matt. Love the learnings from the videos!
I often think of woodworking as a wonderful exercise in dynamic problem solving, but this is a new constraint, and I absolutely love the challenge and the result. I never thought I'd hear myself say "That osb looks really good" before, but here we are.
This project ended up becoming more of an art piece than a wood working piece, well done!
well done young man , your craftsmanship is next level
Incredible craftsmanship! Gripping, funny, extremely enjoyable to watch, as always. Thank you very much!
I'm genuinely surprised at how nice the OSB looks in that application. Great work!
I know it's obvious but damn dude! You're a talented furniture maker... that serious quality work there!
I've never been a jointery wood worker but you guys that are absolutely amaze me
Its not just a box ,it's a piece of art
So glad you are making videos again!
What a cracking video! Love this style of main channel video. It's also great listening to you and Rob on the podcast too, seeing how your discussions there come to fruition with the way you're doing stuff
Cheers David!
Awesome dude. First class. Craftsmanship at its finest.
Beautiful box! Well done!
I think the OSB gave the box a really unique look. Surprising how a cheap grade C plywood aternative has become a popular decorative finshed board for high quality joinery!
Miss you Matt. Nice to see you posting vids again. The end result was incredible.
Nice job Sir. Your patience is incredible, and the craftsmanship is even better. Congrats on the completion.
This has been one of my favourite videos as in the fact that it was great to see you actually being challenged and having to think endlessly about the whole process.
Well done Matt it turned out awesome fella đ
And as for the Obligatory OSB HELL YES đ it had to be done â đ
Haha cheers Simon!
My favorite part of this video was the editing and camera work. Really made the entire thing very nice to watch. Good job on that part and well on the box too.
How did I JUST find your channel?? Mad skills!!
Your woodworking skills are impeccable and paralleled by your humor which is finely honed ( pun intended) loved the video Youngblood!

Just plain stellar.
The new video format is sick guys, keep it up!

"After much pondering, otherwise called procrastination..."
Oohhhhh I felt that one deeply :D.
I've been saying for ages that OSB is an underrated material. I'm gonna have to start showing people this video to prove it
Check out Dan at Guns and Guitars he built an OSB bass guitar that looks pretty cool!
Matt, Well done Mate! I remember thinking that it would be a bit of a tricky build when I saw the design. I applaud your sticking true tot he design. A testament to your skills for certain.
...and I DO hope you were at least given a fresh cold pint after all that (though the delivery was a riot! I needed that laugh desperately just now.)

Good to see you making something again. It was very anxious for me to see that side dovetails on short grain to fit. I would probably not dare to do so unless I reinforce side rails with long grain stips below (somewhat like plywood).
