  • WORDS ON BATHROOM WALLS tells the story of witty and introspective Adam (Charlie Plummer), who appears to be your typical young adult - a little unkempt with raging hormones and excited about a future pursuing his dream of becoming a chef. Expelled halfway through his senior year following an incident in chemistry class, Adam is diagnosed with a mental illness. Sent to a Catholic academy to finish out his term, Adam has little hope of fitting in and just wants to keep his illness secret until he can enroll in culinary school. But when he meets outspoken and fiercely intelligent Maya (Taylor Russell), there is an instant soulful and comforting connection. As their romance deepens, she inspires him to open his heart and not be defined by his condition. Now, with the love and support of his girlfriend and family, Adam is hopeful for the very first time that he can see the light and triumph over the challenges that lie ahead

    Might I say, I LOVE this. I'm a psychology major and plenty of people seem to think that all schizophrenics are crazy and dangerous. They act like schizophrenics can't live perfectly content lives ... and a movie like this shows just how scared and anxious a majority of people with schizophrenia actually are. It also shows how they want the same exact thing as every other person - to live their lives.
    We ALL have obstacles that come and go in our lives ... and struggles with mental health is something that EVERYBODY goes through. Schizophrenics just go through it more than others ... but they're NOT "insane" or "freaks."
    I once had a guy friend with schizophrenia and he told me that he couldn't believe just how kind I was towards him ... because he was SO used to being avoided and picked on for his disorder. All I did was say back, "You're not crazy. You're just sick." ... And that meant SO MUCH to him.
    I hope to see this movie one day, most definitely!! The message seems very powerful and realistic!!

    As a psychology student, I cannot tell you how refreshing it is to have schizophrenia depicted in a respecful, humane, and realistic light. The book really did justice to the reality of mental illness and blew me away. I struggled with hallucinations all through elementary and middle school until I had my psychotic break and was hospitalized. After that hospitalization I changed schools because of all of the rumors floating around about me but that didn’t work because the rumors were just the same at my new school. I had a hard time getting close to people because I was scared they would leave me when they found out about my illness. I recently fell in love with the most amazing person on this planet and it’s hard because I’m scared that my illness will push this person away but just like the girl in this film, he loves me for who I am and can see past my illness. Absolutely crying.

  • @katievr9249
    @katievr9249 Před rokem +9

    As a schizophrenic girl this is pretty true to my experience I did really see words all over the psych ward walls and on the tables. I did stand in the middle of the street and every time I said a mistruth ALL the street lights and lights of all the cars would switch off and when I told the truth they would all come on. I have felt earthquakes happening that made me totally sick and felt like the end of the world but only I could feel it. I have walked on a path and an Asian boy busker appeared he was a phantom with those most otherworldly incredible singing I ever heard in my life filling the street, I have looked on the floor and seen mermaids in huge visions and visions of different time periods on the ground too. I have been suddenly able to sing in Arabic with some magical quality to it, I have heard loud ancient music coming out of all the cars.
    When people tel me this film is too dramatic and far fetched, I don’t get that, because my episodes were all impossible magic. I have a mystical outlook and treat it is as it was known for thousands of years, as a spiritual illness or in my culture a spiritual emergence, it just means your liminal and can see in between worlds, that you have sharper senses into the spirit world, nothing more. This society has become so hyperrational and masculine it can’t bear a spiritual view or the truth snd medicalises everything. Psychiatry ignores thousands of years of spiritual traditions that explain these states.

    • @frogchair
      @frogchair Před 8 měsíci

      YES! I’ve started to realize that so so so many things deemed to be “illnesses” in this culture, are not inherently so. Yes schizophrenia makes life difficult when you are trying to fit into western society that has no room for special people. But there are plenty of societies that have and do experience and hold schizophrenia as a gift and power. Those cultures are not “delusion” or “confused.” To say so is eurocentric and colonial.
      So sad to see our people of spiritual power be cast to the streets. That says a lot about this culture… that’s why were killing the earth too. No one wants to open their eyes, or their minds, or their hearts! :(

    This just warms my heart, these kinds of films, the ones that normalize mental illnesses and educate people on the subject, they are the reason that some people feel amazing and confident and accepted. They shed light on mental illness while also (possibly) helping those with mental health issues to see that it’s okay. Having characters in movies that are genuinely relatable and not completely “perfect” gives me some kind of hope. It gives me hope that, maybe one day, mental illnesses and disorders of any kind will be embraced instead of a “flaw” that someone may possess.

    • @cydneyyt
      @cydneyyt Před 3 lety +2

      Kiki M. Well it should be normalized. In the way you’re thinking normalized things are only positive... which it not always true. Mental illness should be normalized because a lot of people have it, but you’re right. It should also be a way to help people. It’s becoming “normalized” especially in today’s society and generation. You just have to get the “normal” definition out. Yes mental Health illness is bad, coming from someone who suffers from anxiety and depression, but it shouldn’t be seen as we need to be “fixed.”

    *Can I hug the filmakers for originallity.💜*

    As someone who’s spent a lot of time during high school in and out of mental hospitals, it’s nice to see a depiction of mental illness a) from the perspective of the person with the disorder and b) where it’s not dehumanizing or monsterizing. It can be hard to hold the balance of your life and goals and ambitions when it feels like there’s a huge weight you can’t even talk about. During some hospitalizations, feeling like I was crazy literally made my depression 2x worse - and I’ve known way too many people who felt the same way. I’m glad to see a movie like this because it shows the internal conflict and our own reactions to our conditions, not just what other people see. I’m really hoping this movie will shed a lot of light on the feelings of people with schizophrenia -and other disorders, to some extent -very well. I just saw this as an ad on insta but now I’m Really looking forward to this and Need to read the book.

    This trailer came on tv and took me by surprise. I grew up with a schizophrenic parent, and having to watch time and time again schizophrenics be portrayed as crazed/dangerous/murderous characters in movies/shows always bothered me. There are so many people out there in the world with this mental illness who, on their medication, live good lives. It is chronic and very hard to live with, but they still exist and do not deserve the negative stigma which Hollywood has placed over them in the past. I look forward to seeing this and hope it sheds some light and fair awareness on the true nature of schizophrenics, that they deserve compassion, understanding, and love.

    • @katie5998
      @katie5998 Před 4 lety

      RainyDays2 Bro, just go to the library. Any pdf file or audio file you find for free online is illegal, which is fine to do if it’s a mainstream TV/MOVIE, but authors dont get as much love, rep, or exposure as media.

    • @katie5998
      @katie5998 Před 4 lety

      Baby Cat Libraries are open. You just have to wear a mask and check in. Not just that, but they have online apps where you can check books out for a limited time. Or you can get an e-book, or purchase the audiobook. Why thieve from a struggling artist/author, who doesn’t get as much exposure or money?
      Edit: also you used that meme wrong, lmao. How foolish

    Looks like a beautiful movie. A much needed movie. I hope it sheds some light on schizophrenia and mental illness in a more realistic light than the cliche hollywood horror/thriller genre. Trailer looks incredible, it almost had me in tears already, can’t wait!! I loved how it mentioned those with cancer get all kinds of wishes granted and those with schizophrenia and other serious mental health issues get treated negatively, differently and the suffering can be immense, even more than cancer in different ways and the isolation and loneliness only exacerbates the suffering. Continue the mission to normalize mental health as much as any other serious medical condition. I pray this movie ignites an even greater awareness and increased compassion.

    AnnaSophia Robb, Charlie Plummer, Taylor Russell, and many others have delivered such immersive performances in this movie. A very accurate yet not too subtle representation of schizophrenia in the media. They're often labelled as crazy, while that may be true in some way, they do not mean to cause harm to other people or their loved ones. Thoroughly enjoyed this-well, technically speaking, I guess it's more informative than entertaining in any sense of the word there is.
