  • So excited to show you how to make these easy DIY Christmas ornaments with 2 fun acrylic paint swirl methods.This easy Christmas craft is perfect the whole family: for kids, teens and adults too! And it's cheap to boot, using Dollar store / Dollar Tree craft items.
    For the full step by step written tutorial with some more DIY ornament decorating ideas, check out the blog post:
    feelingnifty.c...
    In this video I will show you 2 ways to create these gorgeous paint swirls. The first will dry with more subtle marbling while the second will dry with distinct bold colored streaks. Pick whichever method you like or make both- the sky is the limit!
    Plus you'll find out my lessons learned including my experience using pre-made acrylic pour paint, tricks on how to speed up drying time, and how to avoid muddy color combinations. And stay tuned until the end and I'll show you what each ornament looks when after they're fully dried plus a few more color combo ideas.
    Material Needed:
    1. Deco Art or Arcrylique brand acrylic craft paint (in bottles) amzn.to/3lqwi5D
    2. Clear Plastic or Glass Christmas Ball Ornaments amzn.to/2UnzZ04
    3. Wooden skewer
    4. Piece of Paper Towel
    5. Plastic cup or jar
    Note: I only tested the Deco Art and Acrylique paint brands which both worked for me (Artist Loft pre-mixed pouring paint did not work for me). Other brands might work also, but I haven't tried them so not 100% sure. If you do use another brand and it works for you please comment below and share your experience!

    If you pour, swirl & drain a little floor wax inside the ornament first it cleans the inside & makes it a little tacky to help the paint stick better.

      @@dinacarroll9211 it may help, but is not required. I used to make these with my students and mine have lasted 20 years so far. Mine were glass and I did wash them out with alcohol first to remove any residue. I also did the drip down the side method and just turned them a bit each day while they rested on the top of a cup. Then when all coated they were turned upside down to drain.

    FINNNNNNALLY ... I love the ornaments, and you used very little paint, it was not messy, and it will never rub off! I hate the ones that use so much paint! I cannot afford, nor do I wish to waste that much paint! The first looks more like water. I did not like the second one at all until it dried! That technique made it look more like natural marble, agate, or quartz with the more pronounced variations. They are just lovely!

    I'm going to use the swril method on large clear ornaments. Instead of making a Christmas decoration it's going to be used as a Hallowen decoration. I have some glow in the dark paint and blacklight reactive paint. I'll be putting the ornaments in a tree with the purple or blacklight string lights so they have that they will glow and hopefully look like floating orbs. I may soak some white gaze in Mod Podge and glow paint then put over some small glass ornaments ( may coat inside of the ornament with glow paint ) to make floating ghosts

      That sounds great Florence- Enjoy both methods! I’ve also see the paint poured on the outside of the ornament method- that method can give very nice patterns and movement to the paint ( since the paint is not draining out). And yes on the sealing part too. Enjoy!

      Hey Liz, the first ornament( blue/turquoise) is using the swirl method ( method #1). The second ( dark green/gold/silver/white) is the shaking method( method #2). The rest of them I can’t remember entirely but looking back at the video they look mostly “shaking method” ( method #2) if I had to guess. I remember preferring method #2 more, it just gave a more dramatic colouration and the colors didn’t blend as much and maintained their own. Hope that helps❤️

      You don’t need to seal theses ones because the paint is on the inside of the ornament. I did these ornaments 2 years ago and most are holding up good. Sorry to hear the paint chipped off. The best way to dry them ( in my experience) is to flip them upside down to let the excess paint drain out (for 24 hours), then if the paint is still not dried at that point, I found that placing them upright and angled towards a fan helped dry them pretty fast (within 6 hours ish). Hope that helps. Also did you add any thinning agent to the paint by any chance? The paint can peel off too if it’s too thin.

You can checkout this portion of the video where I talk about my experience: czcams.com/video/4DzCnnxf2yg/video.html. Essentially, I found that the best type of paint to use for this craft is the acrylci craft paint in the bottles ( I used the brand Deco Art , but others might work too). I've had a go at making some of these and some haven't turned out very well😖😏 some have tried and have left a circle mark at the bottom and some haven't covered very well when you hold them up to light you can see through or there are patches even though I made sure it was all covered. Help🙈😊

      Hi Carol, a couple of tips would be make sure the paint isn’t too thin ( no watering it down) this was the cause of some of my ornaments being see through, if the paint is being used out of bottle perhaps try a different brand of paint ( Deco Art craft paint worked well) since some brands might be thinner than others. To avoid the circles at bottom, you can leave the ornaments to dry upside down for 24 hours so the paint evenly drains out and doesn’t pool at bottom. After the 24 hours, if paint still isn’t fully dried then you can turn ornament right side up and placing in front of a fan should do the trick. Hope that helps!

      @@feelingnifty Thank you for that some paint was thick so I did water it down a little so that makes sense. I've ordered some deco art of Amazon which I've a lot better than the paint I bought here in my town. Thank you again😊

      Hi Daniella, most of them held up very well (still in great condition 2 years later). Only a couple flaked out of the bunch.

    We used DecoArt acrylic paint and it was so thick it would not flow. Any suggestions?

      How old is your paint? You might add a few drops of water to it and mix it in well.

    • @feelingnifty
      @feelingnifty  Před rokem

      Is it the DecoArt in bottles? If so then it should be pretty thin. Like the commenter above mentioned it might just need to be mixed (try shaking the bottle) or a few drops of water might do the trick. If you just bought it, you can try exchanging it for another bottle. Gluck!

    I purchased some square ornaments at Michaels would I be able to use this method on them

    • @feelingnifty
      @feelingnifty  Před rokem +1

      Yes, you can use this method on any shape. You might just have to make sure the paint gets into the corners of the square by tilting it a bit more. Hope that helps! Enjoy making them 🎨🖌

    • @feelingnifty
      @feelingnifty  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Astrid, the cracks happened to me when I used a paint that was really thin. When it’s too thin it slides right off and doesn’t seem to stick and dry, creating some streaks and cracks. It seems to work well when using craft paint without watering it down. You could also try different paint brands. It might be that one paint brand is a bit thinner than others. Deco Art brand which I bought from the dollar store worked well for my ornaments. Hope that helps!

    On average, how long do they take to dry?

    • @feelingnifty
      @feelingnifty  Před 2 lety

      Excellent question! Many times it can take 48 hours minimum or sometimes longer. But It really depends on the humidity in the space where they are drying and how thick the paint inside the ornament is. That’s why I first like to store them upside down for 24 hours or overnight at least to drain all the excess paint out. Then flip them over and and leave to air dry for 24 hours or longer until dry to the touch. They were not drying fast enough ( 3 days later)so I propped them up facing a desktop fan and that did the trick in 2-3 hours to dry them up completely. Hope that helps
