In this video, we turbo converted my friends' R31 Skyline in an afternoon/night and thought we'd film it and bring you along for the process. It's pretty damn cool.
USEFUL INFO: Just as a word of advice for anyone doing this, DONT use the coolant spot we did from the block. Use a long fitting to a T piece off the heater hose under the intake plenum.
@@lochietrewheellar1899 The coolant return from the turbo should go to the heater hoses, the feed usually comes from one of those bungs on the block (the ones in the video that were described as feed and return).
The RB30E in the VL Commodore ran a fuel pump relay,yes, it's an RB30E which has been Turbocharged so it's now an RB30ET engine & a high compression (9.0:1) at that. My VL Commodore had more balls than automatic VL turbo when it's off boost as they ran the 7.8:1 compression ratio pistons in them when it ran an RB30E engine. I built an RB30DE engine out of it & it went very well !
Put a intercooler on it. Turbo will last longer and can get higher/safer boost levels. Just spray it black and put mesh in front of it 😉 Cops won't know.
Phase 2 of the R31 is currently under progress, I'll hopefully get a cool video of it soon but it's getting some extra goodies, TD06, rebuilt engine ect ect..
Cheers! the price will depend massively on how you get the parts, my mate sourced these second hand and got most of it for a decent price. Budget something around 1.5-3K for parts and then later down the road set some more aside for an ECU and tuning.

I've been told you shouldn't use your water/coolant return spot that you used. If it does the job though I'd rather used that than t piece into the heater return. How is it holding up?

@@daniellocandro9577 Apart from the fact we ran a coolant line incorrectly yes it sure has, there will be a video of it in about 2 weeks with its new setup fresh off the dyno (assuming everything goes well)

My mate had a custom 2.5" header back setup before we did the work. In the video we are just driving it open dump, he later got a proper frontpipe/dump custom made to suit the rest of the exhaust
Hard to say as the turbo kit was bought second hand and there were lots of little things that had to be bought. If I was to guess, think it would’ve been about $2,000 - $2,500 all said and done

Calls it a Rb30de 0:15 (D = duel overhead cams) says seconds later "single over head cam". But I think he just misspoke.

Hey, currently converting VL to turbo. Did you need to do anything to the evap system?
I did the same to mine but now mine only sparks when u turn the key off any clues ?

We were using a VL turbo ecu with a fuse for the fuel pump. Have since switched over to a Nistune but this setup worked a treat

It’s risky driving the car like that after the turbo install without tuning it

Not sure what you mean by turbo plugs, nothing was from eBay. The turbo was bought second hand
