Follow-up comment. In the video, repairED pointed out a place on the back of the tail light lens where a tab had been broken off. That's part of a notch that fits around a white plastic button. You can just see a little bit of this button behind repairED's hand at :52 in the video. I fortunately have a set of plastic wedges for removing interior plastic panels. I used them to get enough leverage to move the lens. You might need to use a lot more force than shown in this video to get the lens to move.

Don't break a 50 cent mounting clip, Subaru doesn't sell them separately, they will charge you $250 for an entire light assembly.

Easy even for me. Instead of socket wrench, I used a screwdriver.

I was wondering how you pulled off the tail light cover so easily. Then I noticed that one of those white clips that plug into the holes of the car body was already broken. One of mine broke too the last time I tried taking it off.

I too broke one of the white plastic ball pins. I went to the dealer and was told I would need to buy the whole assembly. Not going to do that! So I went to a Subaru body shop and they looked at me like I had two heads. Then I called Subaru of America and they referred me back to the dealer and said there’s nothing they can do. What a bunch of BS!!! Especially when you consider that the pin screws right out and is easily replaceable! I bet the mechanics have a bin full of them in the back! They probably break them all the time!

@@tomgorycki7176 Luckily, when my white clip/ball pin broke, I had both pieces and I glued them back together using Q-Bond. The next time I removed the tail light assembly (which was right after I posted my message above) it was was still intact.

cbast2 Thanks for the tip! I still have both halves of the pin and they fit together well, so this sounds like a good option.

Working on a 2009 Forester... My light assemby - the big plastic lens that holds the brake, turn, and backup lights - does not slide out. There's a catch holding it in place but I can't figure out where. Not as easy as it looks in the video. What am I missing?

It’s likely the little white thing in the video that for him broke off.

Yes! For everyone wondering I just left my local O’Reilleys and they gave me a 2 pack of 7443 bulbs!
