- This 2015 Chevy Cruze Turbo has 235k miles on it, and the owner has run out of options to get it running right.
Both the DEALER and the Parts Cannon have FAILED to fix this severe ROUGH running RICH condition.
Let's start from scratch, log some live data, and see what's going on.
Can we do this diagnosis from the driver's seat?

Its not just the data that needs to scanned, it is the knowledge to be able to analyze the data and know what is wrong. Ivan is excellent at this.
Yes, the technician needs to understand how the system works to make sense of the squiggles on the screen ;)
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics I jumped into bitco^n when it was less than one hundred dollens back in the day... Learning the squiggles changes everything. :)

How much over the base price did you have to spend on the Thinktool?
I’ve heard you must buy additional (extra cost) modules to have it do anything useful.
Is this the case?

Quickly becoming one of my favorite channels. It's like a murder mystery for car geeks 🤓
A good SCANNER will save the day. I recently had similar experience with Mitsubishi MAF sensor. Brand new, $525 OEM sensor from dealer had a glitch. Right away i felt, smelt and SAW the glitch on scanner at cruise. It's easy to assume that MAF sensor is "good" because it's "new", so I was afraid i missed something when i called the MAF sensor the first time (maybe loose pin fit or something else sneaky). I spent another 3 hours redoing diagnosis, leaving NOTHING to the imagination, and concluded that the NEW, DEALER PART was defective. It was a brawl at the parts counter; even escalated to parts Manager and walked him through all my steps. He REFUSED to swap it. So, i bought an aftermarket Blue Streak, installed it, CAR FIXED. I called the parts manager, told him I'm coming with his junk for REFUND, and if he refuses, I'll see him in small claims court, and I'll be adding all my TIME (~6 hours) to claim. I GOT THE REFUND 😅. Car has been gone a few weeks, and even passed CA smog test since repair 👍.
AMAZING!
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics: I've been having good luck with STANDARD IGNITION stuff when OE is a budget buster for customers. IRONICALLY, i convinced the customer to bite the bullet and go with the OUTRAGEOUSLY PRICED OE MAF sensor to avoid EXACTLY WHAT OCCURRED. DOH! The Blue Streak was only ~$160ish, so customer saved $400; he definitely didn't complain about that. Perhaps the Universe took pitty on the guy through me. Oh well, another day at the office 😁👍.
I recently had Standard Ignition wheel speed sensor bad out the box. It happens.

@@hightttech I have seen dealership prices come down significantly from 5 years ago when I was an EIT technical writer working for FoMoCo. When I first branched out on my own I would go to dealerships when critical parts were needed. There's a dealership row with most manufacturers 3kms away so I could get cars out same day. Terrible warranty service and the still high prices have forced me to keep cars sitting for days waiting on OEM parts from online. It was upsetting for me to be treated poorly as a customer at Ford after working for them for 17 years and ascending the ranks. Now my 2nd option is to go get used OEM parts from a salvage yard that's 6km away if a customer approves.
Had an engine swap at a JDM shop for a very fair price engine and labor included. They did a great job swapping the engine but when it came to diagnostics, the car was running almost 20% rich on the LT, I was explaining to the mechanic what Short and Long fuel trims are and he wouldn't believe it where I pin pointed it down to faulty injectors. He swallowed his pride after trying to say to put a new gas gap or MAF jsut from a rich code and finally listened to me, took some injectors from a different car and voila, my problems were solves. It's hard to find good mechanics and not jsut part swappers these days.
At least he might be prompted by this experience to learn some new techniques. I sincerely hope so, for his own good if not for his customers' sake.

For me, Ivan is one of the best diagnosticians in the world. I learned a lot from him, he helped me a lot in my work, saved me a lot of headaches and troubles. Sometimes when I have a problem with a car, I ask myself: what would Ivan do? Thank you again, greetings from Israel.
Tis good to see the owner held on to the oem parts and didn't discard them. The oil change was a good idea. The transformation was a bit on the wow side compared to the initial complaints. Job well done and fast diagnosis.
Teaching one customer at a time.
We’ve owned three Chevy Cruze’s. Two 1.4L 6 speed eco models and one Diesel. I think they’re great cars. Easy to work on, and great fuel mileage. Over 500,000 miles so far between the three.
Always great diagnostics Ivan.
The world needs more honest guys like u
Ivan in my opinion a Master Tech. He could educate dealer so-called techs at any garage. Amazing Guy.
Not a matter of opinion it's an objective fact.
Great video Ivan! I have a Launch OBD2 scanner I purchased about a year ago. It's not a good one like yours, but a less expensive version. It was about $200. It has the live data, some resets and graphing. It works well. Free updates too. I only work on my own car so it all I need. I have learned a lot from your videos!
When you do the valve cover make sure ya tighten down the upper chain guide between cams. Every one I have done those 2 bolts are loose.
Can’t beat a good quicky every now and then. Always great stuff Ivan! 👍👍🇺🇸
Ivan; there are counterfeit Bosch O2 sensors out there. I have run into them, ordering them online vs buying them (at a MUCH higher price) from the box stores. I actually did a callout and an expose on those on my little CZcams channel for my S10 truck. They are the same part number, come in a valid looking Bosch box, but have different wire colors and the wires are different lengths, and a different color sheath. I showed putting them in, what the data looked like, replacing with the "real" ones, and what that data looked like. Beware of the cheap online O2 sensors.
Well done to the owner to make that car last that long
Just ordered this tool based primarily on your usage 🤓I believe it will serve this old retired mechanic well while I teach my sons the ropes
Parts cannon is literally what dealership’s diagnostic method sayes to do - replace this thing, replace that and another and so on till it gets better. This is what my colleagues do, I chose another way) I prefer sniper riffle😁
Chevy thunder! No wonder no one trusts dealers and most mechanics…it’s a shame. Loving the videos. Keep up the good work! Love your signs hung up in the garage too ;) 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
235K you can bet they don't care to fix it, the "please buy a new vehicle" flag is set in the system. lol
also, probably the newest wet behind the ears ASE graduate was sicked on it... 😉
"N.E.W." Strikes again 😏
Great work, Ivan. I can't understand how a new O2 sensor can work well for 15 minutes and then just go dead. Crazy. Seems to be a lot of counterfeit parts in circulation these days.
Diagnostics! So essential but intangible, that owners are so wary/unwilling to pay for the time. I hope even the casual type will watch your videos and get it.
BTW, I bought a Thinktool PROS during the last go round. Solid product.
Great video, Ivan. Thanks for all your amazing videos.
Watching your videos is like sitting down for a relaxing brain massage. Great work!
Thumbs up, people
It helps the channel
Keep on cruising! Good one, Ivan
Excellent video you teach me a lot how to analyze the data, I have too chevy cruze . Thanks
As usual, brilliant diagnostic.
Thanks ,Ivan
Always interesting and well presented. ,😊
Well done ivan 😀
Sensors are a pain in the ass!.
Thanks Ivan ! Perfect tutorial ! There was so much information to digest . That was a great example of understanding system operations and dedication to customer service . What car service data / wiring diagram system do you use ? AllData , or Mitchell’s or AutoEnginuity ?
Like you said, "Data Driven."
Good one Ivan!
Great Ivan, I would bring my truck to you any day!!!
Yes, that is what I said to my self just before the analysis. Thanks Ivan
Great Job Ivan. I own a Chevy Cruze so this was most informative. And also, thanks for letting us know about your scanner on Amazon. Ordered mine yesterday. Should be delivered on Saturday. Can’t wait to start using it!
This video reminded me of a saying I heard online, just because it's new, doesn't mean it's good. 👍
When everyone fails Ivan got you covered!
I am in New Jersey. I feel like driving out there to have you diagnose my cruz. It is doing all the same things that this one is doing. Same codes and all. I also have a 6spd manual 1.4L turbo. Fun, for a small car. Really the perfect blend between economy and Fahrvergnügen
A new sensor that's failing isn't totally unexpected. It's part of the "bathtub curve" where things fails when new and when old bur rarely in the middle.
Sweet ride! Nice work Ivan, who'd a thunk it! NOT the dealer..
Man I wish you lived close to me so you could be my mechanic too. Great video keepm coming
I just bought the ThinkToolPro on your recommendation. Replacing my TopDon that is very limited. Thanks for all the great content!
Best scanner I’ve ever bought, through your site.
There is also a heater resistance relearn that should be done with the scanner after oxygen sensor replacement. I seem to be the only one that actually does this.
That makes sense given the fact that O2 sensor resistance changes with age. Thanks!
It's always nice to get an easy one once in a while. Seeing that rear O2 screaming rich while the front one is pegged lean makes it fairly easy.
Nice work.
Ivan, Thanks one again for another informative video. For the DIYer only needing something cheap but capable, I found the OTOFIX D1 Lite to be perfect. It compares to an Autel 808. Runs on the Autel software.
Great diagnostic, Ivan! Wonder what was really needed, if the owner had gone straight to you. Quick repair! The car seems great for the mileage (on an Ecotec), and I love stick shift :-)
NEW= NEVER EVER WORKS. Great video Ivan. Now you are going to make me buy a Think Tool Pro LOL
Good video, Ivan! You're right, those Cruze manuals are nice cars. We had a 2012 1.4L M6, with the non-ECO gear ratios (more fun to drive). It was a great car until my son got rear ended on I-94 in Michigan and totaled it! Loved your Russian videos with the car and the scenery.
Most techs just see codes and go for the replacement of parts ..as i learned that if a fuse burnt we need to find why it burnt not just replace it.snd same gose for codes means if code is set it should be diagnosed instead of parts canon..great great help to customer ivan. Your knowledge is superb 👌 👏 👍🏿 🙌 ✨️ cheers 🍻
Hi Ivan,
I have a 2012 Chevy Cruze with the Austrian made 6-speed manual transmission where the little rubber manifold PVC valve blew out. It also took out the valve cover pressure regulating diaphragm. I bought a GM valve cover but I bought the Doorman manifold. They mild in this long tapered pin that presses in the middle of the backside of the PCV valve so it can no longer escape. I also replaced the manifold PCV hose. Anyway, that was abytwo years ago and the car is running great. I was lucky because it failed near home! Excellent video…keep it up!😊😊😊
You are a diag God. Too often people at dealerships are pushed to get it out the door Not Do The Diag! Excellent work as usual!
Agree with you on the Cruze, like my 2014 with a 2L Diesel
I had a cruze stick shift.... it was a nice little ride ....traded it in for my pick up
Im having all the 1.4l ecotec headaches, that youve outline in this video & the scotty k was right video. Can you please reply with the mapp, 0², and mass airflow you specifically used please? Also im at the point of intake manifold red stopper gone & debating adding the cruzkits with the new intake manifold. Have you used that kit & if so with which manifold the oem or dorman upgrade? Please let me know it would be so greatly appreciated... as im approaching 2,000 in repairs 😢 due to several dishonest mechanics & inept dealership technicians that ripped me off. Its a breath of fresh air to see honest guys like yourself & scotty k putting out information, that can help empower a person like me to have a foot to stand on & necessary information in the discourse with a mechanic moving forwards from this point. I can turn a wrench & am extremely handy... but don't have the multimeters & scan tool, etc to do the work myself unfortunately. Anyways God bless you sir & thank you in advance.
Good job Ivan! Your diagnosis skills are impressive. Maybe the jungle electronics fouled the new o2. At least the owner kept the oem!
Another great fix from honest Ivan......Well done young man, you are a rare breed, keep it up.....Saludos desde España mi amigo.
Gracias!
always great approach and thought process thanks for sharing brother.
Thanks, that is a very impressive mileage on this car, and of course a very impressive diagnosis and fix. I do not know what you charge for your skills, but you have a rare skill and should charge top rates.
Love the TTP...Because of you...😀
With regard to scanners here in AUS we are limited because of the now defunct vehicle manufacturing industry & most scanners won't work on locally buit vehicles I had to buy a Topdon scanner as it was the only one I could afford that covers all of my vehicles.
Alot of parts suppliers and dealers won't take back electrical components.
Especially if they have been installed. Another interesting diag Ivan.
It's refreshing to see some love for the Cruze. Ivan might really like the Cruze Eco which can break 40 mpg. Yes there are some definite flaws with the engine design on these though they are known at this point. The thing with the Cruze is it doesn't drive like a total econobox.
I was most impressed with the suspension... Super compliant and handles wonderfully! Opposite of traditional econobox haha
Nice! And all of this could be accomplished in OBD-II . Unfortunately car manufacturers won;t be forced to provide any of those infos for car with wireless interface only.
lol!! The 'Stealer.' arggg! You are like the relief pitcher that comes in, throws maybe 6 pitches at 109mph, and Poof! Game Over. wow! Now the owner can open his own parts store!!!! Great video!!!
All those data pids are on many of the inexpensive diy scan tools, i guess my point is that this wasn't that hard to diagnose for an average mechanic.
So you're saying the dealer tech was "below average"? haha
😂 well I didn't want to be judgemental!!
Flat rate stealership guy attempting to be a mechanic can't blame him he probably doesn't know any better.
I really enjoyed my cruze - was sad to let it go. I would have loved to keep it. It was pretty reliable and affoardable to operate once you figure out the demons. I learned a ton thanks to my cruze and great teachers such as yourself.
That's a decent deal in the think tool pros. I paid almost $1,100 when I got mine. But I also picked up the printer and TPMS tool as well. Insurance companies love to see pre and post diagnostic reports. I was watching the live data and was noticing the upstream sensor was switching oddly slow. While the downstream sensor looked like it wasn't doing much at all. Those cruze's upstream sensors normally switch really fast when they are working correctly. The best tools in the world won't help you if you don't know what to look for. Thankfully, Ivan does. Nice work on the diag Ivan.
Scan tools are only good as the person using them, and you're one of the best at knowing what the data is saying. Honestly I would not bring my vehicles to a dealership for repairs, you might as well open their service dept door and throw a hand full of money and leave. That's about what it amounts too🤑. ✌🏻
Wow. It can be frustrating when multiple things cause the same problem. Looks like the pcv issue fouled the plugs which made it run rich even after the pcv issue was fixed so it fouled the sensor.
I've had trouble with the Bosch on my 1990 Ford Taurus 3.0. It likes the Denso ones that have a more open grating. I think the Bosch's had a small slit that would clog or something. Anyway, not all parts are equal so either OEM or make sure the aftermarket one isn't part of the problem 👍
It looks like you are a graduate mechanic after all this years, congratulations!.... From now on you are going to be like your friend in New York knocking carts out left and right, whst's his name Di-fasio or something like that!...
Ivan, have a question. Do you think the excess fuel in the oil caused the OEM O2 sensor to fail quickly? Or bad from the jump in combination with non-OEM MAF and MAP. Better than Corolla or Civic, high praise. Not sure if Corolla has a stick, but believe Civic still does. Excellent diagnosis, as usual.
Thank you PHAD
Yea it’s fun trying to tell a customer there is multiple things wrong you change out 1 thing and try it before they freak out
Glad you like the Cruze. We have a 2015 diesel, Cruze and that car is a real dream to drive -- great economy, comfortable, great performance, superb handling... what's not to like?
I worked a couple of years at used car dealers.
We get few of these engines running roughly and whistling
One time we replaced the belt tensioner because removing the belt the whistling was gone
But soon we started the engine after replacing the tensioner the whistling come back .
The seal was weak ,letting a vacuum leak through the crankcase .
I had a 14 Cruze with the LUV engine. It drove wonderfully for a car of its price. I could go for hours with out being tired.
If they could've got the LUV gremlins fixed(the basic long block is not bad on them), it would've been a competitive car in all aspects in my opinion
My buddy bought a '15 Cruze manual and we bought thought it was fun to drive...😁😁
Ive fixed o2 sensors that were doing the same thing and crapping out after hot by just torching the thing with a red flame and dipping it in alcohol while its hot.. cleans off the little sensor inside i guess.. doesnt kill the thing or cause premature failure either. Or it diddnt for me..
Ivan is starting to appreciate America cars. Ves'ma neplokho! :D
These will not reset the fuel trim values when you clear the codes. There is a fuel trim reset in special functions. Just a heads up from across the pond where these engines are very common. Awesome video as ever 🇬🇧
that oil change was also very important imho 👍
Great video Ivan! Thanks.
Every time I hear the term bias voltage scanner Danner comes to mine.
those purge solenoids are good for setting a p0171
Hi Ivan, my concern is why did the dealer installed O2 sensor fail? did some one use the wrong silicone sealant? Lots of questions about the root cause. time will tell.
Rich
At first I was impressed at the mileage then when I saw it was a manual everything made sense.
Watching Ivan is like watching Dr House for auto nerds
I was hoping for another deal on the pressure transducer.
Good job!
Its unfortunate but a lot Dealerships lost a lot of good Mechanic's during COVID, DUE TO NO WORK. And now taking your vehicle to them is a crap shoot.
The dealership has always been a crap shoot. They get a lot of trade school grads with no experience, guys that rely on guessing and pattern failures to beat flat rate, and guys that are incompetent at troubleshooting. Never enough MASTER TECHS.
love your video's Ivan, always interesting. Small warning about ProS which I love in general and bought after watching you using it. On some Mercedes it will incorrectly show as all green with no faults in any modules even when engine light is on, Autel picks up the faults no problem. One day there'll be a scan tool that does it all, ProS is certainly close particularly at the ridiculously low price.
Interesting, I've used the Pros on many Mercedes cars and it always reads all the modules DTCs. Perhaps it's only certain models that are affected?
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics One was 05 c220 and other was 07 e320. I've used it on lots of Mercedes up to 21 with no issues and also on older 38 pin cars that it worked really well on that Autel and Zeus could not read. I'm in England which may make a difference, I'm certainly not criticising the ProS which is the first scanner I grab but pointing out that on any initial scans that show all green it may be wise to recheck with another tool. You've give me loads of great info, nice to give something back!
There are some things even I can’t justify buying. 2023 Frontier, not far off 95 in NC. I’ll call if I need anything. ;)
Turbo vacuum conduit lines go bad too.
Ivan is awesome....
I have a 2018 Chevy Cruze 1.4T LE2 , had a P0172. Couldn't figure it out. Changed the O2 sensor, MAP, MAF. Turns out, the air filter is extremely picky and has to be installed very specifically. Fuel trims were off the charts (LTFT). Finally clicked on the air filter correctly, no problems since. Other than routine maintenance, 73000 miles still going strong.
@@autodiagyt also caused it to run rich and fouled the new O2 sensor like it was at 150k miles. Thanks for your diagnosis videos, it's definitely a lost art.
I'm wondering if you can clean up and fix a coked up o2 sensor with a propane torch like you can clean coked up spark plugs
Bought the THINKTOOL PROS today. Thank you for the heads up.
For those who say it's expensive, just remember, one good diag avoiding the parts cannon (or the dealer) and it could pay for itself.
EXACTLY RIGHT!
Fun facts for the players at home.
In Australia the entire cruze/astra line up in all its iterations with the auto box are avoided and discarded like they're the plague. I've never seen one last past 150km (90 miles).
In manual, they are lovely to drive but the 14 turbo like this are renowned for oil usage and ultimately killing pistons and ring lands. Many, not even making it to 50km (30,000 miles). The cause was identified as super knocking with a bulletin released by the factory to use a specific type of oil resistant to knocking when burned and a much reduced service interval.
In short, the 2 door hatch back astra is a blast to drive. A great looking car, but worthless in our market. Especially since Holden died (gm pulled out of Australia)
Excellent job
