he cant hide the fact of how thrilled he is.lol im kinda teary eyed seeing his joy
P
The major drawback of Jay Leno's Garage is that every time I tune in up.. I go binge watching, I cannot stop..if is not the Porsche, or the Corvettes, or a Shelby, is a top rebuilt project or Mc Queen's Jaguar, and much more ...and then after seeing his face full of satisfaction driving down the road, like a kid with a new toy...certainly It is an entertaining and informative show...Happy motoring, Jay!
Exactly! It's a trap.
Ditto...all of us with a love for cars living vicariously through Jay!
Amen
For a car guy, without a doubt, the best show on CZcams.
I went from imperial to nash, hornet, davis three wheel then here. I'm getting to worked up this late at night. I'll have to come back tomorrow. I'm on the east coast and have a sudden urge to get on my connie 14 and see steve's jag on the west coast.
At this point in his life Jay has seen it all and driven it all, so it take a LOT to get him to even crack a smile while driving. You could tell he was loving every second driving this Jag, and that is the true gold standard.
Matt Stone “would be thrilled to do the show. How should I dress?”
Jay “I’ll lend you something”
I don't think I've ever seen Jay happier. What an amazing machine....great video!
Kinda like eating Texas BBQ, but he does seem to be savoring in drive.
The smile Jay has right at the start of the drive is priceless.
Actually the green reminds me of a time in the 70's, As a child I was into Playboy magazine (I didn't care for the ladies at the time) looking at the stereo equipment and especially the Jaguars of the time. I also remember trying to show my grandma the Jaguar that was hot in the mid 70's but wouldn't you know it the darn centerfold fell out and ruined the whole presentation. Good times Thank you Jay for sharing this auto
Bob Proxmire A grin from ear to ear...And Jay has a big head.+1000 likes.
*****
hahaha :-D
I'm not surprised, that's one hell of a classic, those jaguars can sell for millions at auctions I believe. Great pickup by jay!
First time I see Jay actually happy in a car, he can't help himself. His smile is genuine. Making a guy who owns so many great cars that happy is a real compliment to the Jag. ;)
So much fun seeing our buddy Jay actually STAR-STRUCK and AWE-STRUCK! He's speechless, gushing like a fan and grinning like a kid the first time he sits on Santa's lap. I had the privilege to sit in this car in the 80s before it was restored. I was invited to test drive it for my magazine "British Car," and it was being prepped for auction (the then-owner boasted it might hit the stratospheric price of $100,000), but he rescinded his offer for me to drive it on Mulholland where we met, so I only photographed it for the publication. Wish I'd gotten that opportunity to drive it!
Never seen Jay so tongue tied and at a loss for words………….God love him.Priceless!
Jay's mechanic looked like a 12 yr old getting a new bike on Christmas! Great passion for an awesome classic car!
The engine is also aluminium block and head, rather than iron block in the standard road cars.
Modern D type replicas, if built right and if the power is bumped up a bit, can nudge 2ton in a straight line, and can be built with later Jaguar independent rear suspension. Those kind of replicas are very, very good!
A 5 speed gearbox also cuts the ridiculously long 1st gear in half and lets you pull away much quicker, and decreases the already ridiculously low 0-60 time. 3 seconds is possible. For a 1950s designed car...
Foxtrot Oscar I
Aside from the rarity of this car and that Steve McQueen once owned it this green Jaguar just flat out looks gorgeous. The cool factor is off the charts! It's also fantastic that Jay can take it for a ride so we can all enjoy the sensation vicariously.
Even the rich can only drive one vehicle at a time! This gem
Makes A.C. Bristol cobra 429
Look like a coffin on wheels.
Flipping through the archives due COVID and came across this gem. Listening to that engine is borderline erotic. Your silence while you drive explains it all. You could see that because of this car, your passion for everything that has an engine, no matter what powers it.
Listen to that cat roar! Simply stunning in every way.
winchuni22 here kitty kitty
Yes, it sounds good but it would sound a lot better if the clutch wasn't slipping.
Jay, I saw this car at the Peterson's Museum and remember it well. The same week you invited me to your garage. It was not only my honeymoon but a dream of mine to meet you and tour the garage. Like you say in the video...How do you top this? You couldn't punch the smile off you and Bernards face. Priceless. Now you know how us regular poor car guys feel going to your garage. Dream and opportunity of a lifetime. I was having brain surgery in 2 months and thank you for making my bucket list! Thank you for the tour, meeting you and your videos. us car guys live vicariously through your garage.
I often wonder if Jay ever reads these but if he does it's what I would of said too the smile on his face puts a smile on mine and what a treat it would to see his collection .👍
What a beautiful car that is.
Most beautiful car in automobile history in my opinion.
True. Like a real masterpiece, that car is so beautiful that you instantly think, "This is beautiful" even if you know nothing about this car or any car.
It's like listening to Beethoven's 9th symphony or trudging through a museum and looking up at a van Gogh: No training or schooling is required. It's beautiful. You might not understand why it's beautiful, but you *KNOW* it's beautiful.
That smile! When a man can have almost anything he wants, there are still things that have unattainable intrinsic value and bring pure joy. Things money can’t buy. Things you have to earn and, Jay, you’ve earned it. You’ve brought smiles to the world for decades and this is a beautiful reward.
Jay has driven just about everything and his expressions are just incredible drivng this XKSS. The history, the former owner, the era where you drove the car to the race, raced and then drove home. Did not have any mechanical issues. Just incredible.
So many car-guy shows, the host just looks "meh" no matter what they're driving. It's awesome seeing how much joy Jay is getting from driving this, it not only shows his passion for "fine automobiles" but also why he's the perfect guy to be doing what he's doing! I know a rich guy who has a couple B-J type musclecars, $$$$$$$ but you can tell he only has them because they impress others, he could just as easily collect boats or sculptures or something... Jay is so cool because not only does he have an awesome car collection, but he shows them off to the world on Utube!
Absolutely he's doing it for all the right reasons. Beautiful vechiles.
I apreciate what you said about Jay Leno, he seems to be a very real, down to earth kind of guy.
+AJaXX JaM From what I've heard, he genuinely is.
+Dan Nork And He has a good sence of humor? ~( : -})={>--- ]
And he has a fantastic collection of denim shirts and jeans! ...Or is it just one denim shirt and jeans?
Jay is often stoic in certain situations, but you can tell is love, passion and respect for this car.
Only episode where Jay Leno is speechless. Actually sits back and drives in silence to savor and relish in all that is the XK-SS experience.
Damn, I am the most jealous I have ever felt watching one of Jay's episodes.
I figure it's 99% the car, not the previous owner's association to it, that Jay truely enjoyed. The whole car, the story of why it was built, how it was built, the fire that cut production short and almost destroyed Jaguar, the now continuation by Jaguar to finish the last 9 cars that were destroyed in the fire using all original tools and dies with correct VIN numbers IS an unbelievable car story that every true car lover should know.
What a moving piece of artwork. Like Leno said in episode... The XK-SS is both feminine and masculine in it's appearance. Such a very strong visual presence before even starting the motor and hearing the side pipes bark and rumble to life with the sound of a nice aggressive cam shafts and quick revving motor.
Man I am JEALOUS!! While appreciating the episode at the same time.
Thanks Jay.
I've never seen Jay smile so much during a drive .. great seeing the effects of the SS bring a big smile to his face... very cool.
Whats so great about Steve McQueen? Jay is the 21st century McQueen
Thank you, Jay, for the humility and joy you exhibited in this episode. Your enthusiasm, reflected in your infectious smile while driving this extraordinary automobile, represents a man who's achieved the contentment in his life that we all aspire to! Best wishes for a speedy recovery from your recent accidents so that you may continue pursuing your passion! I'm certain all your subscribers share my sentiments as we vicariously experienced the jubilation you displayed in this episode!
Notice how easily Jay handles the shifting with this LEFT HAND.
You get familiar with RHD car quite quickly, it isn't a problem.
It's natural and best to steer with the right.
Hes used to it
Yeah, getting used to the shift lever on the other side is easy. The diabolical part is when the turn signal and windshield wiper stalks are swapped over!
Absolutely beautiful car. I really wish Jaguar could make cars look like this today.
Look at Morgan cars, they make old fashion typed cars
***** Morgan's are a completely different style though...
DtRockstar1 They can; Jaguar is hand building the remaining 9 cars that were destroyed in the fire. Better act quickly, only 9 cars, and they're being sold at a million pounds per!
Sam Moon what are you on about?
He is talking about the famed lightweight E Type, built primarily for racing, but sold to the public. Jaguar had a fire at Browns Lane and production was halted, but now they are building the last 12 that never got built, all hand made and selling for upwards of one million pounds, and as far as I know, they ( Jaguar Heritage) have taken deposits on all 12.
He's driven some of the most incredible cars in the world, and this car has him giggling like a schoolboy. I can't imagine the level of awesome it would take to cause Jay to feel joy of this magnitude, but I wish I could experience it.
The smile on Jay's face says it all.
McQueen was a real race car driver. I saw him take 2nd at Sebring in a Porsche in '70. Mario Andretti won in a beautiful Ferrari. McQueen had a broken leg, drove with a cast. Those guys were legends.
Indeed; the King of Cool😊
One of the most beautiful engine bays of all time.
☝️🧐 I agree right next to the Kia Sephia
Never seen Jay happier driving a car! He's certainly a 'Jaaag' man.
the best part of this video is the smile on jays face. she sounds so good!
You lucky son of a gun, Jay. Never even been close to a 25 million dollar car, but you drove one. McQueens. You livin' large sir. What a beauty.
The denim guy said to himself, "what should i wear for the show?" I know, Jay wears denim all the time and I like Jay a lot, so I'll go buy some and wear it as an expression of my respect for a terrific guy. Its so easy to look down your nose rather than look for the good in people. Thanks Jay for your great show!
I really got a kick out of seeing Jay grinning like a little kid at Christmas while driving this car. I think you should buy it Jay :) McQueen would want you to .
The XKSS is the most beautiful car that's ever been produced. Thanks for sharing Jay.
It was quite the surprise how you were at a loss for words to explain the whole experience with the emotion you have for the car, it's history and above all, a love for the man, his action, style and presence. I envy all that you experienced in driving this beautiful automobile today. And only with pure admiration. Thank you for having along for the ride Jay, it was OUTASITE!
Haha. He was grinning like an idiot.
I don't think I've ever seen Jay enjoying a car more than this one.
watched again..for the 5th time...Jay is just in heaven....he loooooves this car...me too.
Jay, I'm really, really thrilled to see how much you are enjoying life since leaving NBC. I hope you'll make Pebble Beach again this year. And yes, you are fabulous. Just saw the Wings Of Freedom planes at McClellan AFB this past Friday when my 15 year old grandson had the opportunity to meet and talk with several heroic WWII aircrew. I originally found out about the Collings Foundation at your website. Thank you!
What memories, as a young man in the 50's, I had the joy of watching real road racing at Torrey Pines in La Jolla and couldn't wait until I could have a car like those. Finally, in early 1957 I was able to purchase a 1956, MGA from the dealer in La Jolla who happened to be at the end of the street that I lived on.
Since then, I have had the privilege of owning another 1956 MGA, a 1962 MGA, and a 1934 SS I which was the precursor to the Jaguar. Now, as I am well into my 80's, I have divested myself of all the toys, but I must tell you, Jay, that period was the epitome of my existence on this planet.
When Jay says "wow" and smiles, you know it has to be awesome.
I visited the Peterson recently and spent a very long time drooling over this car. It's such a fascinating piece of automotive history. A really strange crossover between the D type and the E type. The brake system is strangely similar to the booster system used on Diesel trucks today. You can immediately see it's racing history when you fired it up - noticed immediately that that is a Smiths Chronometric mechanical revcounter.Really cool.I think if I ever got the chance to drive this car I would be as overexcited as you were Jay !Peter
Wonderful video ! I've watched a lot of Jays vids here but never seen him so excited and happy behind the wheel. Great stuff :)
Thoroughly enjoyed seeing Jay & the joy he had in driving Steve McQueen's Jag. 💜
Steve McQueen & jaguar Xkss on my wall in pride of place will always be :)
Steve McQueen and James Garner, 2 of the coolest guys ever!! Both great car guys.
Jay just drove the best Jaguar ever, perfection. The best of what they had.
Utterly stunning car. One of the most beautiful automobiles ever and one of the best full stop. Seeing Jay's face whilst driving, the enjoyment and emotion is just fantastic. A true petrol head. Great stuff
Wow, what a video. This one is really special. Jay, you get to drive some really incredible stuff but this takes it to a whole new level. As well hooked up and awesome as you are, I'm astounded that they let anybody drive this car anywhere, let alone in busy LA! Adding this one to my favorites!!
Jay, it’s nice to see Barnard having some fun, he really enjoyed that.
The joy is written all over Jay’s face and you can tell with those smiles and chuckles he can’t believe the experience.
Jay - this car gets the prize for putting the biggest, silliest grin on your face. Well done!
He is like a little boy when he grins like that, as if his mum said he could have his ice cream now after finally eating his greens ;)
I just LOVE the sound of that engine.
You know what I like most about Jay Leno's Garage? I enjoy watching his enthusiasm for the privilege of driving and owning so many fantastic automobiles. Thanks for allowing us regular Joes to share your passion.
I want to personally thank jay for all his wonderful videos and its great to see his true excitement in a vehicle after all the years and all the wonderful cars he has owned.
Jay's silence speaks volumes... One of my favorite episodes.
Jay Leno keeping history alive. Well done, sir. And thank you!
I love the sound of the car. More than that I like to see the smile on Jay's face as he drives it.
When I lived in Hastings ,Minnesota a couple years (1985-"86) a guy down the street had a 1960 XKE Jaguar. It was fire engine red and a manual 4 speed (no syncro mesh then). He let me drive it down the street and back. They have a distinct muffler sound ...and get up and go. I believe it had an aluminum body too ( no rust) and was a very light vehicle. The interior on it was bare bones with hard seats and a very short stick shift from the factory. I could have bought it for 1,000 dollars in 1986 but didn't have the dough, of course.
Jay that was a real experience hearing you talk about this car and the love you have for cars in general.I just transitioned from planes to cars and that was not easy for me to do,my wife thought I was getting on in age and sme health issue's and she wanted me to stop flying high performance aircraft, now I am into cars and I could see why you enjoy them.I still fly butwith co-pilots (friends) to watch over me.I did aircraft mechanics and I transitioned to auto mechanics with little to no problem,I do find it fun.good luck with your next show, and I'll continue to watch your episodes on this you tube as well.Ray the Pilot
I felt like I was driving with Jay and McQueen too! Thanks for a great video!!
Thank you!! Speechless Jay and this XKSS together is fantastic!!
I recently saw an XKSS in the flesh for the first time. Wow, what a neat car! After years of seeing them only in photos, I mistakenly thought they were rather large and bulbous like an E-Type, boy was I wrong! They are taut, diminutive and as sinewy as an Olympic gymnast.
One of the first Americans to own a Jag XKSS was the actor Jimmy Stewart. I think the year was 1957, I'm not sure. New, the car sold for I believe $8800. Their top speed along the 3.5 mile Mulsanne straight on the Le Mans track was 170MPH. Having owned an early E type, I can only wonder how great it would have been to drive this car. Speculation; Why hadn't Jaguar put this model into production rather than the under performing 140 and 150 models. Driving the 120 model at 90 miles per hour was death defying
My '52 120 had a283 in it had no trouble cruising 100+ up I-5 trying to get it to stop was always interesting.
Jag only built the XKSS in the first place to use up some old build D ypes. The XK 120 to 150 were being cranked out on a production line and selling fine, and certainly being a stamped out steel shell, much cheaper to build than the XKSS.
If it hadn't been for the fire, they would I'm sure have built a lot more than the planned 25.
Nasty clutch slip!
Hello Robert, You ask why Jaguar didn't build the XKSS. betacam235 covered part of it, but one needs to keep in mind that in 1957 Jaguar was 1) still a small car company 2) they, like the rest of
the UK, were still recovering from WWII, and 3) they were just beginning to earn their bread and butter from cars like the Mk I; they were still feeling and figuring out the export market. To illustrate, Sir William Lyons, gifted as a designer and a man who brought affordable performance cars to production for incomprehensible prices, almost chose Not to build the E Type / XKE. That car brought Jaguar to the forefront of motoring, along with the D Type's competition successes at Le Mans, and insured the survival of Jaguar Motor Cars. They expected to produce a thousand E Types or so, and production slightly exceeded 72,000 units and spanned 14 years! My point is that Jaguar's marketing judgement was based upon a smaller margin of financial success --at a risk of a very considerably greater portion of the company's worth than, say General Motors deciding whether or not to build the Metro ( Not comparable to the XKSS, but worthy as a comparison because they were both niche cars ).
the XKSS would still be ,speed wise, a competitive car in today's market. for a small company, jaguar spread itself to thin by venturing out in the competitive saloon car market which proved to be very costly. had they remained specialized in a narrow market of very fast sports cars, Jaguar would have remained the marque to beat for many years. plus their operation cost would have shrunk dramatically, allowing for more capital investment for development into a singular product.
"I love that era." Mentions the day when you could drive to the track, change the tires and the gearing, run the race, and then drive it home again. So cool. Most of it - aluminum . The engine in those days was similar to the one that was in the street car. Dry sump. A combo body semi-tubular frame and a monocoque chassis. Part of the lightweight feature. Sophisticated braking system. Not a wide-angled head. That was only a racing version. The tilting of 7 degrees to the left was so the engine would fit better under the hood. This car has a solid axle rather than an independent suspension like the XKE. These features including the chromed knock off rims, the glove box cover and all the details make this one of the most iconic cars ever. The noise is one of a kind. This truly looks like a Jaguar. Good point, Jay, regarding the revving of 3.4 and 3.8 as compared with the later 4.2 liter motors. That the McQueen car has been maintained well at the Petersen automotive museum is yet another aspect of this particular car that makes it very cool. This is really a fun, Leno's garage. AF
I've gotta say that I have been waiting for so long to see Jay get excited about something which really makes this you tube video about Steve Ms XJ S Jag so gooood. One can sincerely appreciate the excitement this car holds in its spirit to be able to extract such emotion from Jay Leno. Its nice to see you get so fired up Jay, I was really beginning to wonder if anything would ever get you to pop.Very Cool bro.
Brought to you today in glorious quad-denim.
Born and brought up just down the road from Browns Lane :) Great to see this famous Cov-car still alive and built by Coventry lads..............
I love the Joy that Jay radiates. Thanks so much.
From the moment you started the drive, your satisfying grin was infectious. I had this ear to ear, cat-who-ate-the-canary smile the entire time. The next best thing to driving the King of Cool’s ride myself is being able to watch you enjoy driving it. Thanks.
I did see this car in London motor show ( Earls Court ) it was for sale £500.000 thousands pound when Steve s wife was pregnant he did took her to hospital in this car. Fantastic car i will never forget this beauty.
I think we all got a bit nervous at 16:03 when that Jeep approached the driveway. As usual with the sound all the way up you have to strain to hear, but in this case it's worth the effort.
Mercedes G Wagen, but yeah.
Totally approve! 😁
20:24 He was being stalked by black SUVs. Luckily the drivers weren't victims of "unintended acceleration".
I have been binge-watching Jay's videos during the 2020 - 2021 Pandemic. Anyone else?
Bravo to the audio and video team bringing superb XKSS visceral to the masses!
Can you tell Jay's in love with this car? I don't think anything could wipe the smile off his face!
How the hell did these Brits always come out with fantastic looking cars way back in the 1950s and before?...even today these Brit designs are still miles away ahead of their times....I love British sports cars...AWESOME cars and AWESOME designers and engineers.
It’s great that someone is loving and looking after these beautiful card
What a fantastic experience Jay. I felt as though I was in the Jag with you. I had the privilege to drive two nice XKE Jags back in the day when they were new. One was a 1966 Series 1, 4.2 litre coupe that was race prepared in Spain and it was fast, fast, fast. I wonder if that Jaguar XK-SS could have out run me?! What fun I had back in the late 60s driving that car. Nothing could beat me, not even a hemi cuda! I easily blew their doors off!!!! I could easily do 135 mph in third gear. The car would top out over 160 mph.
180mph in a car from the 1950's. Imagine the balls to floor that thing back then.
And 0to 60 in 4.2 seconds. That's f40 fast
@@carlosoruna7174 is this car a 56 or 66???!
I bet Steve did it.
I've never seen Jay so pleased.
Thats one of the most emotional car vids I've ever seen,
Thankyou Jay.
It was wonderful to see Jay drive this living art piece! He was ecstatic & humbled. If anyone on Earth deserved this opportunity, it could only be Jay.
Looks like Penelope Pitstop's car 😄 Some of you old kids know what I'm talking about.
Stop that pigeon!
I loved the Wackey Racers!
It's missing the umbrella...

ha-yelp, ha-yelp.
3:10 when he introduced matt stone you can see the look on his face of being so chuffed to be here that he's even dressed just like Jay!
I have watched this episode a dozens times. McQueen's life fascinates me and he was one of those guys so perfectly mated with his era. This episode could have been two hours long.
Thank you Jay and everyone at Peterson for sharing this with us.
"I don't know what we're gonna to do next week. How do you top this?"
You can't.
Saw this at the Goodwood Revival last year and it's simply incredible.
Really missed Goodwood this year
@@andym9571 Same mate. Highlights of the year for me
@@Joe_BM6 this year hopefully !
Just realized I’m smiling while watching! Jay has so many cool cars and yet he’s so excited for this one...understandably! Thank you Jay!
Keep the talent, the fame, the fortune, The Tonight Show, the acting career, and all the other cars. This is the only time I ever really wanted to be Jay Leno. Getting to drive STEVE McQUEEN'S XKSS!! The "cool" seems to be a mystical aura surrrounding the car and, temporarly anyway, attaches itself to everyone that comes near it. For everyone but Steve McQueen, "cool" leaves just as quickly as the car does, but for that moment in time, any man with any testosterone at all wants to be you. It's way more than just a car.
That Jag is an absolute piece of art.
RIP Steve McQueen. Would be 89 years old March 24 had he still been alive today.
Brian Weir Oh my god, is he dead? When did he die? I haven't been watching the news lately.
*_(just pulling your leg..)_* 😉
To me, he will always be the Cincinnati Kid. Great movie, great actor, great man.
If he hadn’t removed asbestos while in the service he might still be alive today. Bad stuff that asbestos.
I can see that you really enjoyed driving the jaguar with such a smile on your face. I felt that way driving my 1964 230SL.
Almost speechless, this is what Jay does, shows total respect and love for vehicles
I love this show Jay, Ok, more then the late night show!!
It may have been the "golden age" of motor racing...but it was also deadly as could be. LeMans 55 says it all.
Had a buddy 50 years ago who drag raced an XKE, and won...the second race she shifted out of 1st right away and pulled away in 2nd: he said he was so embarrassed.
Gorgeous car and a special treat seeing McQueen's Jag out on the streets again, thanks Jay.
I've never seen Jay so thrilled about a car. He could not get out of the car because of wood. He's the best because you know he loves doing this and I love watching.
Beautiful machine!! If it were me ok the XK120 and the XK140 would be produced but in place of the XK150, I would definitely loved to see the XKSS produced from 1956 to 1961
What a gorgeous car! My only nitpick is the sidepipes. I think it would have looked better with rear exhaust.
Dan Sanger I agree with you Beautiful car. Always had a soft spot for British sports cars.
Dan Sanger My only nitpick is that it ain't in my garage!
Nor mine :-)
+Dan Sanger Agreed. Plus I've read passengers disliked riding in the XKSS because of the exhaust pipe right next to the -- it was LOUD
side pipes = instant erection
