I travelled to Norway to learn trad and crack climbing from Pete Whittaker from @WideBoyz . He took me up a 5 pitch monster in Dirdal and, despite me seconding, pushed me to the absolute limit. Thankfully @KieranJDuncan was the to film but also to give emotional support as we climbed.
Check out his stuff here: kieranjdunc...

Big shout out to Kim who stood in a field for 9 hours filming on her own @Kim_Norrie - Zábava
Mike it was an absolute pleasure climbing together over the 5 days, blumming brilliant effort and amazing progress. Thanks Mike, Kieran and Kim for a great trip.
Well done all! How on earth did you get down?
@@NeilHarrisonNEHThey would either climb out to the top and walk back down an easier path or abseil back down the route pitch by pitch using the fixed gear at the belays (the points between the pitches)
Thanks so much for getting me up this wall Pete. Was truly a once in a lifetime experience you nailed the difficulty so it was a real challenge. Can’t wait to see your perspective on this!
@@dandantrash Thanks, I was more curious how @MikeBoyd actually managed it :O
@@NeilHarrisonNEH we abseiled from some bolted anchors!
Good work mate! Im enjoying this mike becomes alex honnold arc
you did a comment
I know some strong barefoot climbers who would adopt you if you were psyched mate.
Love your content man cool seeing you here. Do you do any climbing yourself?
@@carwash4836 Thanks mate. Yeah i climb all the time. Hoping to do a big wall like mike soon
@@Ididathing thats awesome I’d definitely love to see a video of you and aleksa going climbing sometime
No pressure though or anything just keep making whatever you enjoy
You say "the worst climbing you've ever seen", but that last bit was the best climbing because you were done, but carried on regardless. Absolutely insane stuff Mike. Respect.
Yes !
Absolutely! Climbing not always about looking good, but the mentality!
What a beast, thanks for inviting me to be part of the journey Mike! We shared some epic moments up there for sure :D
Edit: For everyone asking how we got down... there's bolted abseil points, and it took an hour(ish). I'm going to make a BTS video for my own channel which will show that part if you're curious!
Legend!
cheers for joining the journey Kieran. awesome shots :D
Are you guys best friends now
That was awesome Mike. Proud of you :D
your encouragement was brilliant 🙌
the jump in difficulty from the last climbing video to this is wild
I don't know anything about climbing but it looks like he skipped 10 levels or more. Crazy.
Impressive 😮
@@subn0rma1 I started climbing about the same time as Mike did, and I only just got my first 6c top-rope. I thought, well done, I am on his level now! Then this video comes out. I would actually just die trying to do this climb. He made a wild leap. And people tell ME that I progressed extremely quickly in climbing... Nuts.
I think technically it is about the same difficulty
But physically and mentally it for sure is whole new beast
i'm amazed he did not freeze up from the height and exposure, or completely burnt out his energy midway
The difference is very steep.
What a legend. 9 months in and Mike has already learned one of the two most valuable climbing techniques, Scream for Power. Once he learned Shirts off for Power he'll be unstoppable!
I think anyone who's done any amount of climbing has had that moment (or something similar) on a climb, where your brain just goes 'nope'. It's great to see when someone gets past that moment! Great content.
those "i dont want to be here anymore" moments while climbing have been some of the scariest things i ever put myself through
Happens to the best of us, just take Andy Stumpf, decorated navy seal and wingsuit record holder/limit-pusher, his story on JRE of being on an easy rockface with the best equipment possible and having his mind just completely lock up, shaking and being unable to move.
I couldn't help but wonder if was adrenal fatigue, especially with Mike talking about getting a surge of energy and confidence around 11:30 . Things were clearly looking grim at the base of the final pitch, I felt certain he was going to fall or turn back there.
Many athletes have had moments like this, but being on the face of a sheer wall really changes things. Respect to Mike for sharing such a vulnerable moment.
Extreme sports in general... Eventually you'll be faced with a situation where your survival instincts try to kill you.
Had this on C/D via ferrata
Weird sensation when you’ve been watching a content creator from another country for years and years, and then they show up to climb a mountain 10 minutes from your cabin 😄 Hope you enjoyed Mike!
at this point i'm convinced that Pete's whole goal is just pushing people past their limits to make them realize what they can accomplish one climber at a time.
It makes you want to be a CZcamsr just so Pete can introduce you to multipitch trad climbing
I think this is my favourite video of yours, you had absolutely nothing left but still managed to push through it. The emotion we see at the end of video was just raw pride and exhaustion. I am so proud of how far you have come from just sticking a playing card in an apple from across your living room!
This is super cool to see you climbing outdoors now. We actually started climbing around the same time and you're a huge motivation to try outdoors which previously seemed like it was just too much.
bruh
New climbing channel?
Well done mike. And good job Pete for once again picking exactly the right level of difficulty of a climb for someone. What a savage day. I hope mike gets a go in the cellar one day because that would be both awesome and hilarious.
There's a moment near the top of the chimney when you've climbed so high up in it that you're in a crouch, probably because you didn't want to leave the safe feeling of having 3 touchable walls. It made me laugh-cry with recognition, even though I haven't climbed in 25 years. It's such a vivid memory of my first chimney experience. Thanks for sharing this Mike.
absolutely insane stuff dude, can't begin to imagine what it feels like.
but i've got an important question.... how did you get down????
You either walk of and hike down in easy terrain or you abseil down the route! You see they use two ropes one advantage of the two ropes is that you can abseil double the distance. You also abseil in multiple pitches. However walking down an easy hike is auswaschend preferred because abseiling is the most dangerous part of climbing!
They all grab onto the little drone and it slowly helicopters them down :)
@@Nipah.AuauauI'm absolutely dying at this thought.
Imagine if getting down was BASE jumping :P
I love how you said “until today, it was double the height of anything I’ve climbed before” YOU ATE THAT UP MAN. It’s so cool seeing how quickly you’ve progressed
You just can’t compare most multi pitch climbing to sport routes. There are 1000m high multi pitches anyone with decent fitness can climb in a single day. It’s *not* like climbing 50 sport routes of a similar grade at your local crag.
Amazing work!!!! I’m not into climbing but I’ve had long dangerous backcountry ski days and seeing you cry at the end reminded me of those and made me cry. You did awesome!!!
Aw man, the end of this episode had me grinning ear to ear from how happy I was for you!
Sounds like you learned a fair amount too :)
I CANNOT believe you did that. This had my palms so sweaty throughout, and with a beaming smile at the end. It's amazing how much you connect your emotions with ours.
This rock climbing series is awesome! As someone who happened to start at around the same time as you it's been a pleasure to see your progression alongside my own.
I’ve just started climbing and watching you learn and tackle climbs like this is so inspiring! Well done Mike! I hope I can do something like this one day!
Wow Mike very impressive climb! Watching your journey has been incredible and very inspiring. Well done!
You’re kidding me! What a collab!
Mad respect for getting out there and going after it. Climbing an actual trad face climb is insane at the time you have put in and you crushed it. Congratulations, Mike.
You are such an inspiration and I love your Videos. The things I love the most is your wife cheering after your successes and how you never give up. I really like the climbing content a lot too!
Nothing better than seeing a man happy doing what he loves❤
Pushing yourself past that point of no return is one of the biggest challenges of any sport and you absolutely smashed it Mike. To come this far in 9 months is truly a testament to not only you and your determination and skill but the capabilities of the human body and mind when we go for something 👏👏
As someone who has been climbing for years and watching your videos for years, I’ve really enjoyed how you’ve shown your own journey in climbing. I look forward to each update, keep up the good work!
Thanks for being so authentic with these climbing videos. Climbing is so difficult physically and mentally.
What a beautiful video. Mike i cried at the end with you. You have always been a source of inspiration. Watching you complete challenges is always inspiring. But this one is huge. I cant imagine how mentally tough it was. Keep inspiring people, friend.
It has been really interesting to see him, doing this originally JUST for a video. But he ends up falling in love with it and just keeps getting better and better. I really love all of the videos so far. Keep it up!!!
Long time follower here... I've suggested climbing a few times, and I'm happy to see you finally did it!! Congrats, this is the real climbing experience. Great video Mike
I've been climbing for just over a year and I wish I had even half of your experience and mental fortitude. That was an amazing climb. Absolutely incredible.
I started going to a rock climbing gym recently after all the climbing videos I've been devouring and it's been a blast! It's definitely way harder than it looks, but it feels great seeing your own progression with each visit
this is so cool, i started bouldering in january, stumbled upon all the climbing channels (including wide boyz of course) and then mike's boulder video popped up, watched it, and have been following mike ever since. And now, just two days after i finished wide boyz' series with toby segar, this comes out! truly wonderful!
Just rewatched your climbing series yesterday because it's so good and then this gets uploaded today! 🥳 CZcams at its finest. Mike, that's crazy, insane climbing! Wow! Can't wait for more from this series 🤩
WOW. Quite a milestone in your climbing hobby. Been watching your climbing from day 1 and it is very exciting to watch this epic climb. Viewing the climb via your 'lens' instead of a professional's made it more relatible and real to me. One of your best videos.
Hey man you should definitely keep up with this sport, it's challenging and can make you emphasize with the struggles in life!
I never usualy comment on video but WOW, Mike you impressed me (and surely a lot more people). You are on of my biggest inspiration. You are the youtuber that made covid look like it lasted 2-3 month. Every time you posted a video ,after I finish watching it, I would try to learn the skill that you learned (I was not always successful not going to lie) but I was entertained. You made me appreciate the learning, and discovering part of things and I'm so gratefull of that. From the bottom of my heart THANK YOU.
Great effort Mike! Super jealous you got to follow Pete up that route. Also happy that climbing has another ambassador, and one with a great, positive energy.
I absolutely love that you're climbing! I started bouldering around 10 months ago myself and have been loving it ever since!
Yeeeeessssss dude been looking forward to this so much, always good catching your around the gym!! Keep it up dude well impressed!
Didn't realize the importance of breaks in climbing until this video. I really felt the cringe when he said "I decided not to do that" at 11:04
So stoked to see your progress man! It’s inspiring watching you break fears and push yourself past your limit. Awesome stuff Mike!
hey mike, i've been watching your videos for about 4 or 5 years now, and just seeing your progress on everything, seeing you try more and more challenging things is so incredibly impressive and inspiring. keep at this man, you can achieve anything :D
Wow, incredible videography and story telling in this video. On par with some of the best climbing documentaries.
This is the one we've all been waiting for!
huge praise and respect for smashing "the fatigue wall" at the last pitch... to feel done and then manage to stand up again is a feat in itself, regardless of sport or skill level
I know with the magic of youtube it seems like you just started climbing a month ago, but either way it seems like you've improved a lot in such a short amount of time. It's awesome at the end to see how much you really gave it with how emotional you got. Congrats!
I never saw this much passionated man on rock climbing
That what which makes him different
anyone know how to get back down? 😕
Parachute.
It looks like you still have some more to climb before going down 🫣 sorry mate
free fall like assassin's creed
@MikeBoyd, really man, how did you get down from there? It, s not a joke, I'm really curious.
That was so good man! For someone who a few months ago was brand new you’ve surpassed what so many of us do and it’s a real big accomplishment
What a fantastic video, Mike! I'm sitting on my couch smiling, watching you give everything you've got into pitches 4 and 5! I had to laugh when you were pumped out your mind and climbed straight past the jug/rest! Amazing stuff! I don't think I would've handled the exposure anything like you did... Seriously impressive. Must have been a great experience climbing with Pete.
Nicely done man! That looked crazy.
Honestly I've been eying climbing and especially bouldering for a while but watching your videos finally pushed me over the edge and I'm going on my first bouldering trip next friday. 😁
I expect to be thoroughly humbled as I've sat on my ass for the last 15 years but fuck it gotta start somehow!
I felt the same mental state when solo sailing sometimes. Near the end, middle of nowhere, nothing better to do than going forwards, but with the only desire being to give up.
It's a bit involved to consider it skill learning, but same kind of activity to climbing, I think you could like it.
That was amazing Mike! Seriously, CONGRATS!!
It looks like you found something you're really enjoying and I know I'm enjoying watching the videos. Also, thanks for explaining things. I've watched a few climbing related movies (Free Solo, Dawn Wall, Meru, etc.) and I learned a number of things watching yours that I never knew (what exactly a pitch was, how things are policed off the wall, etc.).
Wow, Mike! I'm blown away man. You pushed yourself harder in one day than some people do in their lifetimes. To say I was elated when you made it to the top would be an extreme understatement. I am seriously proud of you Mike, well done mate!
I’m always afraid anyone would fall, but it’s so cool to see climbing
Falling is (generally) fine, it's hitting something on the way down that you want to avoid.
But I don’t get it. How does those tiny things they were putting into the cracks support their weight if they fall?
@@BigPurp9 They open and close like an umbrella. They have a system which the more you pull on them, the "wider" they expand into the rock, to a point where they get "jammed" so good they can well support climbers when they fall. To release them you press the lever that "narrows" them and push them further in, so they get unstuck. Sometimes, if not placed properly, or if the quality of the rock is not adequate, they can come off, leading to long, scary (but 99.9% of the times not dangerous) falls.
@@lorenzomasi3283I think it’s just fascinating how such a tiny think can handle a shock of a fully grown man with a lot of gear falling and not give way
It’s just amazing
@@BigPurp9 two big reasons: 1) the protection they place, assuming placed in the correct manner and in strong rock, can hold a lot more weight than you’d think and 2) the rope you climb on is dynamic, meaning it stretches under load during a fall. The stretch removes a lot of force from the system, lessening the load felt at the protection piece were you to fall on it.
Loving the climbing videos
This was amazing storytelling Mike. Great work, excited to see more of you pushing your boundaries (in a safe way!).
Mike, you are a pure legend!! and have accomplished something soo great. I know that sense of accomplishment so well, I recently passed my IRATA level 1 and could share the same feeling too. I also cried a little too. Huge respect to you Mike and always love watching you achieve something. Keep it up buddy.
Today I got stuck in a crack 💀
*Never back, Down never what*
NEVER GIVE UP
Absolutely brilliant. I think this is the best video of its kind I've ever seen. Beautiful bit of rock, really good explanation of how multipitch works, awesome achievement.
Mike that was really impressive! I also climb and can only say that your topout after your mental breakdown looked really good technically. After such a short time to master something so rad is really a brilliant achievement! Hats off to your willpower and mental strength! I have not climbed something like that yet!
Absolutely bonkers. Something I couldn’t imagine doing as I’m afraid of heights but this is very inspirational. Watching your videos made me want to pick up a rubix cube and even shapeshifting cubes. Been watching for a long time now. Good work!
I love that Pete even took the backpack for him 😂
That was amazing. I enjoy these videos of your journey through climbing a lot, so keep up the good work! Also the music this time was especially nice
Really proud of you man, I’ve been climbing for 3 years and have yet to step foot outside let alone do trad climbing, on top of that I have a decent fear of falling. So seeing you do this is very inspiring and shows that no matter who you are, a first like that is a lot.
Thank you so much for showing this part of climbing as a you don’t really see that often. You’re awesome and very brave for even thinking of doing this.
Keep on keeping on.
I got uncomfortable at the fear of heights several times and needed to pause the video just watching at my desk, I can't imagine how intense this must be in person. Truly an accomplishment to remember for a lifetime, Mike
Hard to emphasize just how impressive this is. You not only flashed this, you essentially on-sighted the entire multi pitch. It’s incredible! For those that don’t fully understand, he may have had the ropes for protection, but he climbed on his own the entire thing without using the rope once. The trad gear, in some ways, made this even harder since he had to clean. Great job!
well, the psychological safety makes it easier again so
@@16m49x3I can't tell if you're trying to downplay this accomplishment or not.
Love the honesty in all of your videos. Well done man.
Mike, it’s great to see how much you’re climbing is progressing. I’ve been wanting to get back into outdoor rock climbing, and this is very motivating.
One word of caution, please be careful not to rush into more advanced trad climbing. There’s a lot of nuance to it, and I had a friend who recently got quite injured because he was trying to climb harder routes too early. Going with some knowledgeable people is definitely good, I hope you continue to have an exciting climbing journey.
Wait now I’m confused how you got back down after that Herculean finish?
I was also confused. There are bolted rings for abseiling back down. You thread your rope through, abseil down it, and pull it through the ring to retrieve it.
Would be interested to see that in a vid - how to get down
I've just started climbing myself, only indoors and I've gone from a 3a to a 5a in 2 months, it's nothing amazing yet but I'm loving it. This would be a dream some day to go free climbing
You’re doing great
Great job! A testament to your fortitude.
My take away from this is it's a great metaphor for life, that can be relatable in many applications.
This video reached me in a way I didn't expect, but so glad it did.
End of the video put a massive smile on my face to see you so proud of what you've achieved. Very impressive, well done Mike.
how do they get down? do they have to climb all the way down also?
you either top out and walk down or it looks like here they tied the ropes together then threaded them through the anchor and abseiled down one pitch at a time
I love watching you progess in your climbing. I feel like im reliving when I started through you; such a wonderful sport
This was breathtakingly beautiful! Amazing. Great job!
Nicely done! I'm am so thrilled for you man (also my palms are sweating). Super jealous you got to learn to multi-pitch with Pete.
Amazing achievement mate, you should be really proud of yourself! Fun and nice video and crazy climbing! I'm a climber myself and don't dare to go near trad so a lot of respect!!
Awesome video, Mike. Very inspirational.
Good on you man! I’ve been wanting to learn multi pitch for years now but life just keeps getting in the way. Thank you for the fresh inspiration though 🤙
This is so much harder than any of your other climbing videos. Massive respect
I'm going to a bouldering intro course next week as a result of your videos. You inspired me to give it a go so thanks for that.
Not only a very impressive climb, also a very good storyteller, fantastic narration Mike !
As a total amateur hiker, visiting Kjerag bolten this summer, this video was a true horror story 😱
Thanks for the video it was very inspiring. To be honest, climbs that felt desperate and out of reach were also the most gratifying ones to succeed on. It's all about overcoming fears and difficulty.
Damn, that cliff face looks so impressive, the fact that you hadn't ever climbed a year ago is really inspiring me to drop all of my hobbies and sports and just focus on climbing.
This video was a masterpiece from the cinematic point, narrative point and your insane performance. Beautiful video, hats off to you Mike.
Amazing video, amazing effort man! you did it! my palms were getting sweaty just by watching this. Cant imagine what you went through while doing this!
Congrats on pushing through it all!
Amazing video
Anyone that has been truly pumped out climbing can feel his pain and knows his triumph. Also the editing of this one is great! The music and tension is killing me.
Just got to add one more congratulations to you MIKE !
Impressive stuff. I have also about 9'ish months of climbing hobby behind, mostly bouldering, and I would have never believed if someone says that they climb outdoor like that after 9 months of experience.
But you are anyway a unique human sample of what can be done/learn 't when there is enough will and effort.
That is absolutely amazing! Congratz Mike!
Hell of a climb, dude! Great job. Pete is unbelievably good at picking challenges right at the very limit of people's abilities
So jealous of how quickly you have got to enjoy the sport and got to climb with some legends of climbing. After over 20 years in climbing, never done a multi pitch that big. I can only recommend when you have more experience you also give back and help with a kids club to ensure they get these experiences as well.
Amazing! So well done mate! I know the exact feelings you had and I also felt like crying at the end!
Amazing job, thanks for sharing your journey! It is very inspiring.
Amazing work!
Those drone shots are gorgeous.
And its weird all of your monogues in this feel, old fashioned. Classic. I don't know what from, but that same feeling of getting to the edge.
Dude, you're absolutely super human. Incredible progress. Respect
