Bought an old welder from 1960's-70's less than a month ago at a farm estate sale. It was in a dark inside barn. Thought it looked like a lot of copper. After watching this, began wondering if it was really copper. Had brought it home with a bunch of other stuff and stuck it in my barn. Just went out and checked. Thankfully, it looks good. I should check things better for sure.

I've started to feel not so bad when they are aluminum windings however never would thought for the age of the welder it would be all aluminum. The non-ferrous guy at my scrap yard said it's worth it to pull the aluminum from the transformers and motors as it does pay around .45-.50cent a pound I think he said and you still get shred price on the rest! so I stopped throwing them into my shred buckets!

Hi, I am 15 and am now making a fair bit of money scrapping in Sydney, Australia. Your advice has been very helpful. Could you suggest any good tips for getting the most money out of a 1960s house in about 8 hours? I will have 1 day to tear out as much metal as I can before it gets torn down. I am particularly unsure about whether to focus on copper plumbing in the crawl space/walls or aluminium window frames and sliding doors? I inherited a few nice Ryobi battery tools from my grandfather, so I am not limited to hand tools. Edit: I also don't have to worry about the mess, the owners don't care if there is glass all over the floor.

Hello! Glad you’ve been enjoying my videos.
Oh cool, that should be fun.
I would start with the easy and obvious stuff. Go for sink taps because they might be brass.
Go after the the copper pipe and any of the wiring you can get.
I’d do the window frames last as they can be hard to clean because of the window seals and glue.
In an old house like that, the door handles might even be brass.
Hope this helps, feel free to ask me more questions if you need.

My scrap yard only has 2 grades of aluminium, irony/dirty and clean, unpainted extrusion so it doesn't make sense for me to put too much effort into cleaning painted aluminium. I get about 60c Aud per kilo for the dirty stuff and about 1 dollar for clean. I suspect the scrapyard is giving me a low price because of my age, but I don't think there is much I can do about it. They give me $7 per kilo on clean copper.

      @@ethanhumphrey5758 you’re welcome!
Yeah some scrap yards can be a bit shady, especially when younger people are involved and they assume you don’t know anything.
That’s a good price for copper. Yeah I’d definitely go after as much copper as possible!
Check the main electrical panel, really nice thick copper will usually be going into them. Also, and I’m assuming you already know but just in case, make sure the electricity and water are shut off before removing anything lol.

Thanks, the owners did already get a qualified electrician in to disconnect the house from electrical. Interestingly, the main cable going from the street to the house is aluminium, not copper as I had hoped. Pretty sure all the wiring inside is copper though.

I have access to much newer and efficient welders. Plus I’m a hobby scrapper, I do it for the fun, money is just the cherry on top.
      Thank you for watching.
