    Refugees from Afghanistan, Syria, Sudan, and Eritrea steadily descend on a migrant camp in the French coastal town of Calais. They hope to gain entry to the UK, just 21 miles away across the English Channel. But in May, French police destroyed their camp and told the migrants to go elsewhere. And so they moved... across the street. With the few tents and blankets they're able to salvage, the refugees formed the Salam camp, which now holds about 400 people.
    Every night, the migrants - many of whom have been forced to flee war and conflict in their home countries - attempt to sneak aboard trucks headed for Britain; eight migrants have already died this year while trying to make the journey. Inside Salam, things have gotten so bad that some occupants are hunger striking in an attempt to draw attention to their plight. But the French authorities do little to help, while the UK government turns a blind eye.
    VICE News spent time in the Salam camp to find out why hundreds of displaced people are being allowed to live in squalor - and even die.

      @libertasdemocratiam887 Před 5 lety +15

      @𝑺𝒐𝒑𝒑𝒔𝒍𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒏 i think he's making the point that our ancestors fought for the western free world we live in, if these people who are fleeing regime want their country to change they need to fight for it, not leave roaming Europe repeatedly trying to access a country illegally, if the boot was on the other foot we'd be killed on illegal entry in most countries or at the very least face life in prison. Look at the British lady who took (stupidly i might add) tramadol into Egypt, she's sat in prison for that because its illegal to have even prescribed tramadol. The point being people see this hypocrisy when people entering our country illegally manage to end up staying, usually most do work, that being said it's usually off the books work so they can stay out of the system and can't be tracked, that then means they're not paying into the tax and NI system, so they're not paying for the use of say the NHS for instance. Working cash in hand they means their wages aren't being regulated like the rest of the country, meaning most often than not they will work for less than citizen of the UK, low skilled jobs are then taken from the low skilled UK nationals, for instance builders/construction and manual labour workers especially in the south have seen their work being taken from them as employers can save on average in this, particular instance, roughly £40-60 for each illegal worker they hire. I have no problems with people legally coming here to work and better our nation, but those who enter illegally have broken our law in the first few seconds of stepping into UK soil. We've seen the illegal behaviour continue further with instances of adult men impersonating a teenage child, so he was illegal to beginning, then given refugee, at which point he lied to the officials and said he was 15. He was 21 year old man with no papers, so no idea if he had any prior convictions or true age, and was going to school with children, kids at the high school aged from 11 to 16. Should we be ok with letting just anyone and anyone in when men, who have not undergone any checks to be near our children as teachers and school staff HAVE to do by law, can end up sat in class with our children. If you don't have children yet imagine would you honestly be ok knowing that grown men can end up sitting in a classroom with your child, without the authorities, teachers, or any other parents knowing? The teenagers who had classes with the man ended up raising the alarm when they protested to their teachers on more than one occasion that he was a man not a child.

      Irina Samoilova If by "west" you're including the USSR and modern Russia, OK. The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan killed 10x more people than the more recent NATO one, for example.
      If you study the history of Africa, the Middle East and West Asia you'll see that they're always perpetually at war and/or ruled by dictators. It has nothing to do with Western involvement, they would be fleeing the misery inherent to their dysfunctional societies no matter what. Many of these migrants from Africa to Europe are from countries that Western foreign policy has little to nothing to do with, and are countries that are relatively peaceful and prosperous. They fact that they aren't content with staying in France, and there are almost no women and children among them should show they aren't really refugees- they're economic migrants.
      And as for lumping yourself in with them- Eastern Europeans like your family and the many Poles and Romanians in the UK aren't really a problem. They are a much closer cultural fit than Africans and Middle-Easterners, are willing to work, tend to have education and skills, and don't intend to impose their culture on the host country.

Yet it's our fault because you choose not to? If I was fleeing with my daughter, I would be so grateful to reach a country were I wasn't scared of being murdered, or having explosions going off. If you choose to keep going then it leads everyone to think you're looking for the best deal, and not for refuge! So take some responsibility now for your own actions.

      Then you’re just subjecting everyone else to a life and culture that they have e no clue how to navigate-living in their own country with a different culture-
      And I think it’s criminal to make the natives of your host country’s, overwhelmingly feel poorly- no matter who they are --that they are to feel bad...
