Once Iron Man worked they were basically full steam ahead.
They already tried to make a universe with Artisan years earlier so they'd been working on this for awhile. I swear it only works because of Feige. Like if you see an MCU movie you know it's going to be good. The only actually bad MCU movie is Thor 2 and they corrected that shit right away and made another great movie in Ragnarok. The worst Marvel movies are the ant man and the wasp type that aren't bad, they're certainly entertaining, but nothing special. And Marvel has more important things to worry about now with their own future projects rather than a shitty spin-off movie made by Sony.

Shin Godzilla was pretty huge, on and off screen, and they have all the rights to their characters. But as far as the MCU's success, it wasn't even that they made good movies. But they made their universe feel like an actual universe They gave four great stand alone movies with just little nudges and hints and something greater, and then they revealed it in Avengers. After that, they were free to do more standalones, or group projects. But just by having some events that tied everything together, it worked great. Most cinematic universes want to have it all worked out already by the second or third movie. It's why I think the monsterverse is going to do well, because Godzilla and Kong were mostly respectively their own thing that then leads up to what we're about to get in King of the Monsters.

I think most of the books they talked about could be great movies. The problem is that the people who make the movies don't see a new fantastik concept, they see the next Harry Potter, and try to make the next Harry Potter. Which fails misserably, and then they've made a bad version of Harry Potter and a terrible version of a great book.

Oh my God, just because a film has sequels *_DOESN'T_* make it a Cinematic Universe!!!
I've seen this idea thrown around quite a lot of late, and it pisses me off in ways only a nerd like me can be pissed off.
A cinematic universe is where there are _seperate series of films_ that intersect and intertwine. Thor: Ragnarok is not a direct sequel to Doctor Strange, but features a crossover cameo _with_ Doctor Strange, establishing that they are separate characters in the same cinematic universe!_
The Golden Compass or Eragon or King Arthur, etc., wouldn't count because they'd just have direct sequels, like the Dark Knight Trilogy they mentioned at the opening!

I think the reason these cinematic universes don't work, is because no one takes the patience to introduce everything. They try to show everyone "here's our plan for the next five movies" by putting in easter eggs that are way too obvious. But i think that plan should just be kept with whatever company is doing the movies. If they just waited it out and patiently released one movie at a time, by the time the characters from those movies come together, everyone will be like "wow i didn't see that coming" or "wow all these individual characters from all those movies are together now!". Patience and not getting over excited to release movies is the key

I honestly hope Venom is legitimately good. I know that announcing a shared universe before making a decent movie a la the Mummy is not a good idea, but I really just want Sony to show they've learned that the key to doing this movie strategy is MAKING A DAMN GOOD MOVIE FIRST. I think the main reason this is happening is Sony wants to "extend" their deal with Marvel, and if Venom turns out to be good, they can confirm it's story connects to the MCU (it happens in San Francisco btw so it's not contradicting the MCU at all) and the other movies they have planned out are more of a selling point towards Marvel. That way both Sony and Marvel benefit from having each other's characters connected between their movies, which is legitimately fascinating. All this hopefulness may all just be because I'm a Spider-Man fanboy, but I HATED TASM2 and at this point I just want to see the shared multiverse concept done right just so I can have some hope left for this idea.

No. A cinematic universe consists of simultaneous stand-alone film series, that can coalesce to form a larger whole. Star Wars is not that. Star Wars is, at best, one series of films with some ancillary material on the side. That is not a cinematic universe.

Honestly, the major things to make a shared universe are:
    - Somewhat well known characters
    - Somewhat well known actors to play those characters
    - A secret organization to bridge the gaps between the characters and tie them together
    - Make the movie watchable
That's it. If they have that then they've already made it easy for themselves. I seem to be one of the only people who didn't hate The Mummy, it wasn't anything spectacular, but it was a fun movie to start a universe off with and I think that the Prodigium organization was a cool idea, even if it's just the B.P.R.D. from Hellboy. But it works as a way to tie all the characters together. S.H.I.E.L.D , Argus, Prodigium, etc are all decent examples of organizations bridging characters and adding a b it of world building to the universe.
ALSO. I thing that the Tom Clancy shared universe has a decent groundwork and I know that they plan to make The Division into a film and (I think) they planned on a Splinter Cell movie as well. Just make those films and Jack Ryan within the same universe. I'm not talking about the Chris Pine nu-Jack Ryan film, I'd rater him be an older more veteran agent from the Cold War era and they can imply that all the older films with him are still canon, while being played by totally different actors, but still happening within the universe. And honestly, The Division agents are a really cool concept and having an actor like Jake Gyllenhaal in the lead role will be interesting, seeing as how he seems to pick his roles very deliberately nowadays and he hasn't really done a BAD movie in a while.
