June Farm Tour | Where Is My Summer Weather?

  • It's June on the farm, which normally means hot summer day causing the flowers and veggies to explode into massive growth. But not this year! And it is causing some issues for our growing - the summer flowers like zinnias and cosmos are sad and slow. Our summer loving veggies like tomatoes haven't really started to grow. And we still have a lot left to get into the ground. But the carrots will be ready soon. And the spring loving flowers, like ranunculus, are having the best year ever. Come and check out our flower farm and veggies gardens, and get all the details about what is going wrong, and what is going so right!

    Lovely dress ❤️I grow organically and use nothing, it took a few years but nature takes care of the baddies now. My roses were covered in greenfly a few weeks ago, there's no way you would have expected them to survive. Two days later the lady birds had eaten them all! Hang in there, you may be surprised. x

    It's my first year. Zone 3b. I'm making 1001 mistakes and I thought I could garden. Darn it, its exhausting and I'm 60 yrs old and completely on my own, not even a well . I have to run a pump from the dugout and water with pails.
    I'm not sure I have the backbone for this but I was so inspired by you and flower hill farm.
    I may have to settle for a small" you pick " operation so that's how I'm compromising. Today I will plant more sunflowers and cosmos and decorate the beds and area with decorations, birdhouses and many benches . I feel okay with that

    I love watching your garden tours of your beautiful flower farm. They are my favourites. It is truly inspirational. I like the way you sit amongst your flowers and you you look so joyful, especially when you get dressed up into your pretty summer dresses. It is still to cold here 'down under' to wear summer dresses Brrrrrr🥶 I am at the seed planting stage. You have inspired me to plant a heap of new flowering plants, especially annuals that I have never grown before. So a big THANK YOU Serena and Ian.

    I'm near Blue Mountains, NSW, Australia. We had really NO summer last year ( & this year). Cool, cloudy & rainy. Hoping for warmer this coming summer.
    Your sea holly is so pretty. I planted some from seed & the pollinators loved it & it was tough but was very prickly & the flowers were smaller & nowhere near as pretty. I cut some to dry & kept wondering what the horrible smell in the house was & it was the sea holly.

    Pureed and watered down onions applied like a spray works on aphids. It can make the strongest, sweetest smelling tea roses smell like onion and then rotting onion if the pureed onion isn't washed off by rain or watering. The scent may repel both aphids and harvesting ants, it breaks up the ant trails (ants dint like to cross it), kills the aphids which are directly sprayed, and kills the aphids which eat coated vegetation. I understand similar can be done with some of the hotter peppers too.

  • @happypappy

    Thank you for what you said about not using any pesticides! I’m expanding each year my backyard gardening in both cut flowers (you are so inspirational on that!) and my vegetable gardening, and just this morning while knocking Japanese Beetles off my new strawberry plants (Johnny’s Seeds bareroot) into soapy water in a coffee container, I was thinking about how I would like to garden completely pesticide free! I’m learning as much as I can about companion planting and natural pest control. We’ll see, but that’s my goal, and once more you’ve inspired me! I’m growing cut flowers to make bouquets to give away and enjoy in our home (maybe one day sell?) in Missouri, Zone 6b!

      @YouCantEatTheGrass  Před 2 lety +3

      I think a good way to approach it is to realize that a natural garden isn't bug free. And to see bugs in the garden as normal and natural, not as something wrong. Pesticide free > bug free.
      Aphids on my yarrow isn't normal. It means that something is up with my yarrow. Maybe it needs more water, maybe it needs more heat. But the bugs tell me about the health of the plants.

    Beautiful farm and flowers.
    I have noticed that infestations seem to go in waves. I think it's because nature needs the food insects before the predator insects also explode in population. I have not used anything besides handpicking and water sprays and actually much more just leaving it all alone for decades. At some point, I noticed that most of the time, I do not have any infestations at all. I guess the insect war goes on hidden from me. I do see all the insects moving about and love all the life the garden supports.
    For the mustard, have you tasted the flowers? Also, you can harvest the seeds for spice. Depending on the mustard and type of stems, you might also try the stems. Try just eating them or cooking them and then try doing that after you peel them. it might not work with that type but then again, it might. You have a lot of stems haha. Just a thought because there are many people around the world who use the entire plant. Due to necessity, they have created some delicious foods that way.
