One of the last great '60s bands hailing from the San Jose area, People followed in the homegrown tradition of such fabled South Bay combos as the Syndicate of Sound, Count Five, Chocolate Watchband, Mourning Reign and the E-Types.
Mikel Hunter Herrington, the legendary KLIV disc jockey known as Captain Mikey and the man who helped break the Syndicate of Sound's national smash "Little Girl" in 1966, agreed to manage People if they found a new lead singer. When high school pals Larry Norman and Gene Mason both sounded outstanding at an audition, Hunter suggested the band use both as frontmen. The rest of the classic People lineup would include guitarist Geoff Levin, Albert Ribisi on keyboards, bassist Robb Levin and drummer Denny Fridkin. Everybody agreed the name People-in contrast to the common practice of the day of anthropomorphic band names (Beatles, Animals, Byrds, Doors)-was a winner.
Produced by Captain Mikey, People's "I Love You" single vaulted into Billboard's Top 20 by the spring of 1968, then circled the globe as a chart-topper wherever it was released. Of course, "I Love You," originally a 1965 B-side by British pop maestros the Zombies, is a knockout. Penned by Chris White, bass player of the St. Alban's combo, the song, as were most Zombies melodies, is a minor-key gem, and it still resonates heavily today with Summer of Love vibrations.
But anyone who thinks People were just a vehicle for little-known Zombies songs should have a listen to I Love You, the San Jose outfit's first album. One of their debut LP's more remarkable tracks is Denny Fridkin's "Crying Shoes," which incorporates the familiar strains of Edward Elgar's "Pomp and Circumstance" march into a tune whose bridge is right out of the Absolutely Free album by Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention.
And, not to be missed is "The Epic," a sprawling work-often compared to the Who's rock opera Tommy-that occupies the entire second side of People's debut longplayer. In reality, "The Epic," which features some dialogue in Spanish, wields a lighter touch than Tommy, more in the vein of an earlier extended work by the Who, "A Quick One While He's Away."
A full understanding of People also requires total immersion in Both Sides Of People, the band's second Capitol LP, cut in an era where albums not singles had the power to make or break an artist. Norman had left the band upon the 1968 release of their first album, reportedly because the record's name had been changed by the label from What We Need Is A Lot More Jesus And A Lot Less Rock 'n' Roll to what Capitol deemed a safer title: I Love You.
Although Larry Norman was gone, three of his tunes-in particular the brilliant, Small Faces-like "I've Got You On My Mind"-grace People's sophomore effort as testament to his songwriting prowess. But People soldiered on with Gene Mason now singing lead full-time, opening large concerts for the likes of the Doors, Janis Joplin and the Byrds. People had proved they belonged on the national stage, and they took full advantage of the opportunity.
Amazing that those guys could still sing in the original key 40 years later.

I saw Larry sing and give his testimony at church a few days later. Afterwards, I learned he had gone blind

It was a miracle to get these boy's back on stage together , 37 yrs ago was their last gig, two of them had not even spoken. As a kid I used to see them perform in the late 60's ,never imagining I would ever get to know them or play music with some of them.
The People!! OMG!! I used to love this song in the 60's. I have remembered the lyrics all these years. To find it on here is a huge blessing. 😃
On this day in 1968 {June 8th} People performed "I Love You"* on ABC-TV Saturday-afternoon program, 'American Bandstand'...
At the time 'I Love You" was at position #22 on Billboard's Top 100 chart, two weeks later it would peak at #14 {for 1 week} and it spent eighteen weeks on the Top 100...
"I Love You" was the group's only Top 100 record...
* And from the 'For What It's Worth' department, in 1968 there were three other "I Love You" records on the Top 100, "La-La Means I Love You" by The Delfonics {reached #4}, "Hello, I Love You" by The Doors {peaked at #1 for 2 weeks}, and "I Love You Madly" by The Fantastic Four {reached #56}...
These guys played at our amusement park in 1969 (Hansons Park-Harveys Lake, Pa ) - they spent the whole weekend with us on the lake boating - I have a post card from Larry telling me that they are opening for the Rolling Stones & have many pictures - THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES
Was around 14 when this came out....lots of good music back then....In 1972 or 73 I saw Larry Norman touring supporting his "Only Visiting this Planet" album. I knew the guys bringing him in, and stood within 10 ft. of him. He was the real thing for sure, as far as his musical ability. Have played his tune "The Outlaw" many times over the years, usually at a spiritually focused event.
In 1968 this was so unique. They played it more than the Beatles in my town. Got to give then one hit wonder status at the least.

I seen them in Santa Cruz on the beach when they first did this song. I guess you remember Harper's Bazaar ? I met all of them and became pretty good friends, I was 13 then. Ted templemen became a successful producer. good for him.

Gene Mason is one of the most talented, gifted, and classy singers, songwriter and guitar players I've ever known. He sings and plays solidly. Those musicians who have worked with him 'never forget his amazing musical talent. He sings and plays from the' heart and it leaves us a lasting and somehow haunting memory of his great music . I have always loved this song from the very first time i heard it. It was the song that was playing the last time i saw my brother the night before he took his life. He heard it too and asked me to turn it down as i was leaving the campground. I know he knew how much i loved him. Steven and Larry thank you for your contributions to my life. Rest in peace. I met the band when Tommy Tucker was playing with them, he was the nephew of my mother's best friend and I was a little kid sitting in her living room when various guys would pop in from different parts of the house. They were great! Giovanni Ribisi's father was in the band too Albert Ribisi. I have their album with this wonderful song on it.
I saw The People play in a teen night club in northern lower Michigan way back when (1969?), called the Club Ponytail just outside of Petoskey and Harbor Springs. Love this song. Great job after all these years! 👍🏻

In 1967-8 I lived in a hippie house on 3rd Ave in San Jose with Albert Ribisi in the room across from me. So many stories--Jerry Garcia talking with Peter Grant on the side yard, the almost big bust when the cops came in because of a complaint about Peter's loud playing and Sue's quiet knitting... Anyway, Al was a wonderful guy and I was a new prof at SJ State.

A great song that has stood the test of time. It didn't become a hit for the Zombies but it did for People. Here they did a fine performance of this great song. It still sounds like the way it was done back in the 60's. It's great to hear they hadn't lost their sound.
I saw them at the Santa Clara county fairgrounds in 1968. At that performance they included in their set the Beatles "I Am the Walrus". It was fantastic. Anybody else out there remember that.

They came to the Tracy Ballroom in the late 60s. I was already heavily into music at the age of 15. I was impressed with them. I remember they also did (I believe) I am a Walrus by the Beatles.

After gaining success, most of the band members -- except Larry Norman and Gene Mason -- accepted Scientology. Larry and Gene dropped out and People struggled to continue, but eventually broke up. It's nice to know entire band made ammends before Larry passed on Feb. 24, 2008.

The guy still has his upper register after a half-century, and that's the first thing to go in a vocalist. They even played in the same key instead of dropping it a full note to make it easier on the vocal cords.
Even though Larry Norman gets all the attention for his talent---check out that other singer from People! That dude's heart is totally in the music! And he probably hasn't performed all that much in recent years compared to Larry! Larry looks like he's just going through the motions here--and it used to be the other way around. He was the singer in People that had all the charisma

I know this sounds so weird, but I was looking for the B side to the single of this song. It was titled "Somebody Tell Me My Name."
And I want to say that this modern performance of this song is flawless. That surprised me, considering how high those notes are.

I'm from the 60's too, had this 45 back then by the People. The Zombies sounded similar but this is defiantly The People's song.

They ripped off the Zombies. It’s there song.
There's a big difference between ripping off a song and simply doing a cover version. There have been hundreds of cover versions of a particular song that became the hit version of the song. Even the Beatles did many cover versions that were big hits like Roll Over Beethoven and Twist & Shout for examples. If a group does a cover version better than the original and they get a hit with it then that basically becomes their song. Paul Anka wrote the song My Way but is there anyone on the planet who doesn't consider that as Frank Sinatra's song?
