This is how I imagine people who watch football for first time and get really confused by what's happening.
I am so confused
I still never learned what goes on in football lol I like to keep the mystery going
I only know what is happening from a graphic novel
No clue what’s going on rn
i love this sport sm how have i never watched it before wow
Hahaha yes it’s great I played in roller derby since I was 9 I’m now 19 if you really like the go try it out it’s really fun but you do get your ass kicked a whole lot but it’s a great sport
I’m 14 and I’ve been playing since I was 11 I love it so much!!!
Just started roller derby not to long ago! Watching to get some better knowledge on how it works :-)
This isn't really roller derby. You need to look in the 1970s
@@AlmostReady504 sports change overtime 😐
If you end up seeing this, how’s the Roller Derby coming along?
Back in my teenaged days all I did was skate anywhere I could! Even on vacation in Pennsylvania! I randomly entered a speed skating contest and was shocked 2h3n I actually won, speed skating is the best high ever! I always wanted to try roller derby but I'm from Connecticut and we only have like four skating rinks left! I just get two new sweet pairs of roller skates! I can't wait to go again!
14:20 omg media woman with the camera... i feel so bad for laughing
At first I thought this looks boring, but as it progressed it looks like it might be super fun to play.
I’ve been having a derby marathon now on CZcams I need to go to one in Austin it’s a must on the list.
For sure! Texas Rollergirls are a fantastic group!
14:20 I feel that photographer :(
Omgg
😭
This is a whole new Roller Derby.I am from 1970😂
loved this, such an exciting game!!! first full one i’ve watched aside from our rookie scrimmage
Scald Eagle is a MFing badass !!!!!
And OH MY BLACKMAN WITH THE HITS WOW
So I think I’m starting to understand the rules but can someone explain how the hammer can get five points in one pass?
Hi kevin! The Jammer would score a point for each opponent she passed: 4 blockers + 1 jammer. She only received the jammer lap point if she completed a full lap and the other jammer had not completed a lap (was stuck in the pack or in the penalty box).
In 2019 that rule changed and in the current ruleset a jammer may only score 4 points (4 blockers) per pass.
The rules have continued to evolve over the years; sometimes watching old games requires a rules refresh!
The Hammer is a pretty good derby name.
@@TheWFTDA How do you eep trac of scoring in that mudde
@@dolphinsneu one Jam Ref skates with each of the Jammers and tracks their points which they signal to the Score Keepers at the end of each Jam. Jam Ref is one of my favourite Ref'ing Positions...I skate in the UK as a Referee for Womens Flat Track Derby under the Name 'Dane Dare'
@@danewood2309 How can the score get so high when you can ony score four points per am
These women are insanely tough
I remember the first time I saw these two play. Wow
How does this sport exist lol, it's so gnarly. I'm a guy and quite strong I wouldn't even mess with these women!
Holy shit i remember watching this as a kid. My mom recorded it on VHS over my Rugrats the movie cartoon lol. I didn't even know it was still a thing. Why does the ring look different tho?
The derby from the 70s and 80s was played on a banked track - one that wasn't level to the floor. There's still a few banked track leagues out there, but the flat track version is it a LOT more popular, because it's much easier and cheaper to set up a track. Banked track leagues pretty much have to own a warehouse. Flat track leagues can play anywhere with a big enough room.
The other great thing about modern derby is that it's not scripted - no one actually knew who was going to win this game until it ended. (This was frequently not the case in the 80s.)
There's probably a local league in your area - derby is even better live, so worth checking out!
There is two types of Roller Derby. Banked track and Flat Track. There are fewer banked track leagues on the US than flat track as flat track can be played in ANY rink large enough. As a sport it never died, just had resurgence.
Me too!! But they went around the track. This just seems like football without the ball. Please don't kill my childhood!!
@@jamonherman9364 Chill out, man. Banked tracks still exist.
I play derby. Would like to try banked but they are so rare now.
This is the first time I have seen roller derby since, the 80's I guess - I thought it faded away long ago. The roller derby I remember had banked oval tracks, like NASCAR....and it was fast-paced racing as well as trying to knock each other out of the rink.
yeah this is not Roller Derby
@@SexySpork what is your definition of roller derby then?
This is Flat Track Derby
Wow number 20 Bravo 👏
Looks like sport in movie alita battle angel
i dint know this sport existed!!
this is such a weird sport but it's kind of interesting to watch
Watching this 5 years later. Wow. Things have changed.
Hey WFTDA what is the easiest way to learn for the written test? (freshie with mild learning disability)
Hi Ambyth, to reach the education team please use the contact form on the website: wftda.com/connect/
As someone who used to love classic roller derby and even tried out before at one point. Tthis is an interesting twist on the sport which is weird because what these girls are doing on the track will be penalties in the older School league and what they do in the older School leagues will be penalties in this version a roller derby but I do understand concessions have to be made for the safety of the skaters but they still need a bank track to really make the sports shine
Yes this is poppycock
I have no idea what's happening but I know stalled eagle is a legend
not nearly as exciting as the old roller derby on the curved tracks
I'm sure skaters would love to have banked tracks back but they are expensive and kinda permanent once installed. Hard to find a place that wants something like that.
I liked it a lot better when it was raised wood floor.
I agree! Just like the good old days! Flat surfaced floor defeats the purpose!
~Dutch
@@pcbuild3468 The easiest way is to show you. Find some old footage and you will see the difference for yourself
The old sport was theater, like wrestling. This sport is more legitimate. The reason they use a flat track is so they can set up easily in many different vanues. The banked track is a huge complication and expense.
Do they not use the roller derby tracks anymore?
Flat Track Derby (the FTD in WFTDA) can be played on any flat surface which makes it much more accessible and portable. Banked track roller derby is a similar but differently conducted sport.
it is the wood floor need here.
I play this sport 😂
Is Gotham Girls representing Warner?
Did the commentators say that someone was a 1/4 lap behind? Behind who? What laps? I didn't see any laps.
It’s the sport that the rollerblade killed
Looks rough as hell I don't get it
This isn't as rough as I thought it would be
yea but after a PRACTICE you could have about 6 bruises
Gear up and 1v1 me
@@amelliangames7365 I'm not saying it isn't rough, just not to the level I expected
Impractical Jokers got me here 😉
35:54 Why are there sometimes 2 hammers at the start before one skates off?
Teams will do this to confuse the opponent! If you put 2 jammers on the track before the jam starts, the other team doesn't know which jammer will stay & which one they need to focus their defense on.
I think this should really be called huddle derby, no one is rolling....I don’t get it but I want to.
I have no clue what’s going on
Here's a good place to start! czcams.com/video/OId6gTd2LCM/video.html
I don’t like the linking arms by blockers. For much of the jam, it’s just jammed up.
So....it's kind of like football without a ball on roller skates?
Similar to like if ice hockey and football created a hybrid baby, you are constantly playing offense and defense, some teams specialize these roles. End of day it is about getting your jammer (Star on head) through the pack and around for as many laps as possible and their jammer (Star on head) stuck behind your hips
I still think Rollerball was a much better game.
That must be the most American thing ever invented
Felix M. nah that’s cheeseburgers, football, and obesity. this is played all over the world.
@@zyx.gbm66 you forgot diabetes.
@Blue do you ride on horses instead of skates in TX?
that's a bit shocking for me :P ;)
@@zyx.gbm66 It was still developed/ and reborn in texas but ok savanna!!!
Is this roller shoving? I don't see anything but shoving. I don't understand how they score. I guess I need a video to explain the rules. There don't seem to be any. Scattered pockets of small groups of athletes shoving each other. LOL.
I'm lost on how the point works. I can see what they need to do but I don't see how they count the points?
Oh I see, every lil line. It's a point and the more you cross its another point.
The jammer gets 1 point for each opponent they pass!

Gnty; ,

I was watching a clip of 70s roller derby , which is hilarious. But this is sad. Nothing more than wrestling with skates on. Just put them in a ring, and the last person standing... At least they used to actually skate.
I was born I 63 mom was feared on our block. Touch her kids she would change your religion, no bank's,no wall no missing teeth , no broken bone's, no concussions.what the point.the women of the 60-70's were gladiators. This is like watching pee wee football.😂
Flat track is boring af
Meh I’ll watch roller derby from the 80s
Wtf is happening
What the fuck is going on
Imagine the smell of dirty derby
like glitter!
Wtf
i thought this was gonna be cooler
Wow this is way different than the Roller Derby i saw growing up. No banked course , no speed at all..... this is way more boring. In fact I did not even know they still had Roller Derby I havent heard about it in like 30 + years
you saw roller derby… never played! don’t knock it til you try it as they say.. these are very talented individuals 😊
Imagine roller derby but men now that's a bloodbath

Sport lol
i haven't watched roller derby in twenty five years congratulation for screwing something up and destroying it
i'm not sure if you or the NFL are the worst but really
how can you take contact out of a contact sport
@Delaney Williams Griffin then play golf or baseball
I get the safety thing I'm a hockey fan I'm glad they have added safety rules because I like my favorite players playing again next year
However some sports are very physical and one of the main objectives is hitting someone as hard as you can legally
What is the point you are missing
Boo hoo. The changes are for player's safety. Still, the game requires great skill to play and is super fun to watch. Sorry if it's not up to your taste, but no need to bash it. "how can you take contact out of a contact sport" This isn't the movie 'Whip It'. There is plenty of *legal* contact. Are you watching the same video as us?
@@donaldskaggs9817 Derby is dangerous as it is! I’ve gotten two concussions while playing it! One in juniors the other in adults I hardcore get the safety.
You've obviously never Skated in Roller Derby,, all Skaters go through the 'Fresh Meat' Grinder including us Refs , so we all know what it takes to be a Skater on the track , it is Full Contact....as a Ref I've seen broken ankles, legs, wrists, broken noses, concussions and one Blocker who broke her Jaw, and that's with the safety regulations in place, but when you're skating on Concrete and tiled floors there is nothing soft to land on except your pads.....those Skaters on the Track are Hardcore Athletes
wtf is this
roller derby duh...
roller derby, it’s in the title
Take a guess
omg when they read every name and number it makes me realize why no one watches this, its like the beginning of the bible
This is so dumb, but i still watching it. Don´t know why...
Dude really!?!!? I think it's so exciting! And super fun to play
Ok this sport is just lol ...how do you say boring ..i dont get it girls in skates pushing and bumbing eachother like bumber boats ??
Have you not heard of Google. " The object of Roller Derby is simple. Each team is trying to score more points than the opposition. Points are awarded when the offensive player from one team, known as the jammer, laps a member of the opposing team. As a full contact sport, the defensive players of the opposing team, known as blockers, can use physical force to stop the jammer passing them, as well as helping to clear the way for their own jammer." There you go.
