The Women’s Flat Track Derby Association is the international governing body for the sport of women’s flat track roller derby and a membership organization for leagues to collaborate and network. The WFTDA sets standards for rules, seasons, and safety, and determines guidelines for the national and international athletic competitions of member leagues. the amount of insecure men in these comments is crazy. just because you see a group of women being powerful and being extremely talented doesn’t mean that it is a bad sport. if you actually watched more than the first 35 seconds you can see that it is incredibly difficult and fun to watch.
Seriously, they're really just salty because they don't understand all the rules and plays of the game. They might be stronger on foot but not once they put on some wheels.
Guys. If you don't know what roller derby is, look it up.
Roller derby is when two opposing teams, 4 blockers each (8 blockers in total) and 1 jammer each (2 jammers in total) the jammer has to get through the blockers to get points.
After getting through the pack once is when you're able to score points.
So if you pass 2 blockers you get 2 points.
It's not easy.

i think im one of the few guys that came here just cos i wanna watch the sport and see girls competing on rollerbades. i actually was going thru my movies and saw 'whip it' and came straight here, lol. was expecting to see an actual track and not taped off grids, lil bit confusing but i do enjoy the sport.
Not everyone enjoys the same things but I have never heard anyone call derby boring confusing and even complicated but boring never! If you have never seen a bout and do not understand the rules it can look pointless and personally I do think derby is a bit rule-heavy but still the most exciting sport I have ever payed or watched!

I'm here because my older sister used to be on a roller derby skating team here in the IE of California. Many years ago and I got here listening to rock skate bounce. I got redirected to this and now its making me miss watching my sister play and makes me want to go skating even though I can't skate myself at all lol!! I don't know to much about the sport but I do enjoy it and hey my sister used to do this sport so I love it!! 2019

Liviahel I don't know all the rules but what I do know is there are 4 jammers and 1 star jammer on each team. The star is the one that scores the points. The star has to make 1 lap around and then pass the jammers of the opposing team. For each jammer including the star jammer they pass they get a point. So up to 5 points each lap. The star can pass their helmet thingy on to someone else but I dont know if thats limited to the jammer that has that stripe one or if it can be any jammer. If someone gets a penalty they have to go out for I think a minute. The jammers are trying to stop the stars from getting past and also stop the opposing jammers from stopping their own star passing

I wanna get skates and learn to skate and play roller derby and I already fricken love this sports without even skating
10 on the track, five on each team, 3 blockers on each team, 1 jammer on each team, 1 pivot on each team, blockers try to stop the other teams jammers from getting through, jammers score points by passing the other teams blockers, lead jammer (one in front) can call off the jam at anytime, pivots (stripes) can take the jammers (stars) helmet covers if the jammer is struggling. There are legal and illegal zones on players bodies. Illegal areas are middle of the back, below the knees, and from the bra strap/shoulders up and no pushing anyone back with your forearm or using your forearm. Legal target zones are everywhere else on the body. Don’t go outside the lines of the track. Yes it is confusing, search up for all the rules if you want, this is the basis of how to play a game. This is for anyone who doesn’t know the rules.

ooh in your off skate time do heaps of cycling (great for cross over leg strength and cardio) and climb stairs side ways in cross over form to build specific strength. find some 20min HIIT workouts and try your absolute hardest. keep a journal of skill progress and optimise your workouts to what you need to work on, share this journal with your coaches and get feedback.

Hi so im new and eventually in the future i want to do roller derby, can someone explain to me what’s going on, does the scorer have to go through the jammers? Why do the jammers link together? Everything is just really confusing and id like to start somewhere. Xx
Emmy Boo the people with the stars on their helmets are the jammers, they have to get past the blockers on the opposing team :) one the jammer makes an initial pass (getting through the opposing team’s blockers and around the track once), she scores points for each person from the opposing team. the jammer that gets through first is “lead jammer” and she’s the only one who can call the jam (which means everyone resets back at the jam line, and the jammers have to get through again before they can score more points). I’m sure there are videos that explain the rules better than I just did hahah
It’s a really fun sport though!! If there is a league where you live you should look into joining :)

once the jammer completes their first lap they must get their hips past the opposing players. If they go past all the opposing team (including the opposing jammer) they 'lap' the opposing team and get 5 points.

I do not understand how one team can call the "round" off as soon as the other team escapes to start picking up points... that just does not make sense. Means one team can consistently pick up points while the other team will never catch up.
Hi! The first jammer (the one with the star on their helmet) to get through the pack of blockers legally is declared Lead Jammer, which gives them the advantage of being able to call off the jam (round) early. Either jammer can earn lead, but if neither one makes it through the pack legally on their first pass, there is no lead jammer and the jam lasts a full 2 minutes.
