Obviously football is more advanced now in every single way compared to Pele's time. While Pele was godly back in the day, he was playing the game at nowhere near the level Messi is playing at now. Back then, footballers played like 3-4 times a week, terrible diets (included alcohol and smoking), tactics and systems were primitive compared to now. Now, the average defender is insanely fit, tactically verse and has decades of football knowledge to use and improve. I'm sure if Pele had been playing today, he'd be even better. But he didn't and he isn't but Messi is. So Messi is fortunate to be as talented and hard working as he is but also to be playing in this era where teams get 110% out of every player of theres, much to Pele's disdain.

Now when a player breaks his leg they are back to normal training in around 4 months depending on severity of it. Interesting point though.

Messi is obviously one of the all time greats but it is worth remembering he is playing in an era where leagues are incredibly top heavy. The top clubs in each league are far superior to the rest of the league, some of the Barca sides Messi has played in are arguably the best ever.
