  • There are six levels of validation in DBT. Radical genuineness is the highest and involves the therapist as a human and an equal to the client.
In this presentation, Dr. Stephanie Vaughn, Psy.D., explains the six levels of validation in DBT.
Here are some highlights we’ve extracted from this video:
    1. There are six levels of validation in DBT, the highest of which is referred to as radical genuineness.
    2. Radical genuineness involves the therapist as a human and an equal. It involves engaging in an authentic manner-not taking themselves too seriously or ignoring the obvious.

Level 6, "You're feeling this way because it is this way." The world stopped for a moment as I heard this.

If you are able to accomplish Level 6, then you ate having a genuine exchange - and should refund the client/patient. You both have transcended therapy 🙏🏽

Very helpful. Thank you so much! It'd be great if one can do these validations on themselves.

Thanks for doing these vids Stephanie.
I work at a drop in centre as part of a group that meets to discuss mental health with others that have experienced mental health issues first hand.
After coming across your website by the guidance of the divine intelligence I have been studying DBT. Not only I have experienced BPD first hand I see others struggling with a therapy that works as often CBT does nothing or little to help in the case of BPD.
I suggest to people that they should try DBT but as of yet very few people have come across it.
Thanks to these free resources I can point them in the direction of DBT and hopefully make them curious enough to ask it as an alternative to CBT from there health care provider.

What about pre DBT skills assessments do they hold lots of weight to outcome of a condition or success of DBT skills?

Is this specific to DBT (as opposed to regular CBT?) My psychotherapists can't even get past Level 1 and they don't know what DBT is.

Hi! I'm really sorry to hear your therapists aren't even listening to you. I hope you changed to different ones if you can, they don't sound like very competent therapists. Did you get a chance to do more research on DBT? I found DBT very helpful for myself personally! It's typically a several month long course, done potentially several times a week, to teach you the coping tools within. The fact that it's structured and that you're given handouts to take home is really helpful!

Just to clarify, validation isn't just for therapists. Validation is a skill that is used by most people in casual conversation. It's not specific to DBT, but DBT has some worksheets covering it because it's part of the work done in the therapy.
