- This is Our First Time Watching Reaction to the movie Pacific Rim (2013). Long ago, legions of monstrous creatures called Kaiju arose from the sea, bringing with them all-consuming war. To fight the Kaiju, mankind developed giant robots called Jaegers, designed to be piloted by two humans locked together in a neural bridge. However, even the Jaegers are not enough to defeat the Kaiju, and humanity is on the verge of defeat. Mankind's last hope now lies with a washed-up ex-pilot (Charlie Hunnam), an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) and an old, obsolete Jaeger.

They don't use swords and their guns very often because it spreads a lot of Kaiju blood which is highly toxic.
What Acting? You Guys Better Not Be Talking Shit About Charlie Hunnam, This Cast Is Full Of Legends Minus Mako, Who Was A Newcomer Here And Never Saw Her Again After This. If Certain Pats Were Campy It’s Prolly Meant To Be.
Everyone craps on part 3 but honestly it was another fun big monsters and robots...what else do you need...hopefully yall get to it too...
Would yall consider watching the DC Animated movies in order? 💡
Watch "Vampire Hunter BLOODLUST " animated movie (yall like Castlevania this is better)
Cinemawins actually talked about why the sword wasn’t used earlier in the fight. When the movie started, the narration said that the monster’s blood was poisonous and contaminated locations, so a sword would spray blood everywhere and that would cause long lasting natural damage. That is also why they punch the monsters all the time and use plasma and fire based weapons, to prevent blood splatter.
wouldn't the plasma cannon or the chest missiles do the same ????
@@xenoigohan7458 From what I understand, the plasma cannons and the missiles don't completely stop bleeding, but they are effective and minimize bleeding while a sword, as cinemawins puts it, sprays blood everywhere and is more of a last resort. For the most part, even punching the monster to death can cause bleeding, the goal is to just minimize it to avoid causing long lasting damage to the environment.
That's a decent enough explanation for me.
Yea. I think there was "swordplay" from the beginning at the end of the movie because its on the bottom of the ocean.
Especially with all the talk of "kaiju blue" at the beginning it makes sense
The talented Japanese actress and singer Mana Ashida was just 7 years old when she played the young Mako in "Pacific Rim," and because she had difficulty pronouncing Guillermo del Toro's name, he let her call him "Totoro-san" after the big friendly rotund forest creature in "My Neighbor Totoro." I thought that was adorable.
That's hilarious. He's kind of shaped like Totoro as well. 😂
On the flipside, when asked who they'd want to Drift with, many of the cast said that Del Toro is the last person they'd choose, on account of all the crazy shit in his head.
@@eskreskao A valid point!
@@eskreskao To be fair, if the inside of his head is anything like the inside of his house, that's an understandable stance to take
He also let her call him Gordo Hijueputa, which means "A person full of joy" in Spanish, and I think that's beautiful 🥺
This movie is an absolute love letter to the Kaiju genre
...and super robot anime.
True that!
The second one…not so much
@@zexalplays628 sequel basically power rangers make by studios. del Toro is not related with sequel
as a Godzilla fan and original Power Rangers fan growing up... this was such a treat of a movie to me, wish i could show 8 year old me
The reason why they weren't using swords was because Kaiju blood is extremely toxic and hard to dispose of if its spreads everywhere so they use brute force and plasma weapons to cauterise the wounds.
Also maybe the fact that the Kaiju would evolve and find a counter to swords, so they best be kept as a last resort so that the Kaiju don't pay attention to it ? Could be a point in there as well.
@@seezar100 that and mako in the books was a mechanical engineer, and the descendant of swordmakers - so i'd think she'd have some better know-how than your typical weapons manufacturer. to my vague recollection, at least one earlier jaeger (tacit ronin, featured for a moment in the prologue) has bladed weapons, so gypsy danger's sword is presumably the first sword, but not the first blade.
*cauterize
One of the subtle thing that I realized after rewatch this movie is the reason why the typhoon, cherno alpha, and striker eureka lost because they got countered by the kaiju. Typhoon is dynamic, but weak against long strikes, so the kaiju use its tail to beat it. Cherno alpha has solid armor, but weak against acid, striker eureka is weak against emp because it is fully electric. The alien knows their weakness because newt do the neural connection with kaiju's brain.
I think you might be right.
Newt also knew about Gypsy Danger yet nothing countered it.
@@Zankaroo He didn't actually KNOW anything important about Gypsy Danger. He was very familiar with the others, but GD was a recent rebuild and maybe even a recent arrival. He knew OF it. But knew nothing ABOUT it.
@@logandarklighter Given the state of the jaeger program it is very likely that GD was restored at if not mostly at the Shatterdome. And nothing in the movie says Newt didn't know its features. Newt probably knows its original features which are largely unchanged after the restoration. GD only got some basic internal upgrades and a sword. Given one of GD pilots didn't know about the sword, Newt probably didn't know about that. And honestly GD has nothing special about it other than its nuclear rather than diesel powered, (honestly why would they not all be nuclear, hundreds of engines swinging around seems pretty damn stupid and wouldn't work with the fuel and oil going everywhere but where it needs to in combat.) plot armor. We already saw GD get ripped and stabbed apart, the acid would melt it, and being powered by a nuclear reactor wouldn't stop an EMP from shutting it down despite the movie suggesting that. Still a lot of computers in there that would fry.
Well the Kaiju masters did learn about the sword later when Newt again drifted with the baby kaiju. Thats why the underwater fast Kaiju attacked intentionally ripped of the arm of GD which had sword. But they didn't knew that it had sword on both arms.
Something few people recognize is that the Kaiju evolve based on the previous attempts failures and are almost always defensive. This is due to the aliens having to observe what the Jaegers use and wanting to cause the most damage and toxic spread possible. After Newt drifted they came in with specific weapons designed to beat the Jaegers because they now had knowledge of human technology and how Jaegers work. The acid designed to penetrate their armor and the emp designed to disable their function. They even added a baby Kaiju so that they could get more intel when they drifted a second time. Since the Kaiju are cloned there is no way for them to get pregnant.
I thought that too. I was like how did it got pregnant in the first place. Your explain could be true.
I know this is old but the novel explains that they can get pregnant and have reproductive organs. Basically they were supposed to send some in groups to birth more Kaiju on the other side making it harder for the humans to fight them.
Also the fact that Otachi had wings that would allow it to fly over the walls
This will always be one of the greatest Kaiju movies.
If only the rest of the existing material wasn’t so Dumb. At least Pacific Rim Comics weren’t bad.
@@danielramsey6141 sequel is make by studios, del Toro want prequel but studios want sequel. so he left and studios make it more like power rangers with those combine limbs and shit
@@boboboy8189i remember the prequel being stuff like tales of year zero or something. the yukon brawler vs karlov would have been more epic, since they are kind of slower in pace than the main movie, the sequel had the problem of being too fast it felt like power rangers and aot titans fighting
The reason that Crimson Typhoon and Cherno Alpha got wrecked so hard definitely was because of Newt. Before then, Kaiju just tried to fight Jaegers mano-e-monstro. But after Newt found out "oh Kaiju are just like big living Jaegers", the reverse is also true and the Kaiju learned that "oh these Jaegers are just machines that have little pilots inside". That's why they suddenly decided to go for the pilot cab, and why one was suddenly equipped with an EMP. The Kaiju's 'engineers' briefed and equipped them better after they got this new intelligence.
I like that but if you look at the knifehead fight you can see that the kaiju is actually using tactics to some extent, targetting the arm since he knows what would happen if he didn't, going for the con pod, killing Yancy and pretending to be dead to get the upper hand. We also know that the knifehead attack was a turning point of the war where jaegers started losing due to this change. All newt did was give them insight to weaknesses as well as other ecosystems which is why leatherback looks like a giant gorilla
@@JayJayGamerOfficial I feel as if the OP is right, and you are too. What if the Kaiju are intelligent in their own, and the Newt braindance just gave them additional direction and information to work with from the alien's side?
I'm thinking the Kaiju are maybe as intelligent or a little less intelligent than an octopus.
@@JayJayGamerOfficial Knifehead may have just gone for the head, and played dead from base intelligence. The specific counters of Cherno Alpha and Typhoon must have been from alien intervention.
@@lavans5721 I agree that the kaiju are intelligent, their tactics certainly evolved throughout the war with kaiju from trespasser to knifehead relied mostly on brute force, in the novels and movie we know that there were only like 2 Jaeger casualties from this time but it seemed to have accelerated after knifehead, the first 7 years with 2 casualties and then the next 5 where only 4 jaegers remain with gipsy just being rebuilt too. I predict that their intelligence and battle tactics grew after each attack until it hit that turning point of knifehead.
🤮
Few actors have the presence that Idris Elba has. Every role he is in he just dominates the screen
He understands the effects he has on women (and men) ... lol
Idris Elba is such a goat🔥
@@itsthatmemelowell it's like he's "black Superman". He makes a meh FF spin-off enjoyable.
@@zairac2564 he should be Hancock in 2008 and not will smith
The reason for the Australians shooting flares at the Kaiju was just to do some kind of aggressive act against the Kaiju before they die. They didn’t know Gipsy was arriving. Their Jaeger was out of commission and they didn’t just wanna sit around to die. Better to die fighting than just sitting and doing nothing.
36:50 Like they said Kaiju blood is insanely toxic, so you either want to beat them to death or use the plasma cannon to singe the wounds. Anything that causes massive amounts of blood to be spilled, you tend to want to try to only use it as an absolute last resort. And the reason why they actually use it later in the movie is because they're up in the atmosphere so any s*** would burn up up there. And ask for Raleigh not knowing about the sword he probably wasn't told about the grade and all the chaos. And she was trying so hard to stay in the drift that she probably forgot about it.41:40 lol that's everyone's problem with the sword but they have a legit good reason for it. And the whole reason why they use it again at the end is because at that moment it was more important to end the fight than deal with some toxicity. Besides I think it was so deep that it would have dispersed well enough to not cause a problem.
this film is perfection. Its cheesy, hammy and glorious for it. it knows that it is, it embraces what it is, and it delivers in spades.
Love this take! It knows itself and made me think about the overdrawn very dramatic well casted and also scientific black hole movie that goes on about love as an equation. Like, cmon. And emotionally heavy and long. Like ugh.
The Kaiju were looking for him specifically because they knew that he had information about the colonists they didn't want him to share. They knew because they too learned things about humans through him.
one of the greatest mech films of all time.. makes you feel like the good ol' days of 90s blockbusters again ..
You would think a movie like this would be fully cgi at all times, but the fact that they used a surprising amount of practical effects makes it look so damn good.
The moving and flooding/sparking Jaeger head set was amazing 💯 honestly Guillermo del Toro is so amazing at that aspect
And the same reason why the 2nd movie was trash. Because it was 100 cgi with almsot no realism effects. It was basically a giant sized power rangers movie.
@@adarsh4764 I personally didn't even pay attention to that, that movie has different problems...
@@adarsh4764 well that and the robots felt too agile. It’s like they didn’t have the weight of the first movie. Actually yea, that movie had a lot of problems as the plot wasn’t that good.
Godzilla meets Neon Genesis Evangelion is a hillarious but great analogy😂
That sums up both Pacific Rim movies perfectly
@@noahschultz9031But there’s only one Pacific Rim movie. Remember.

@@Hyyless I think he/she/they mean the second one wasn’t as good as the original
@@noahschultz9031 This is correct
Something I didn't learn about this movie until WAY later is that they got Tom Morello (RATM and Audioslave guitarist) to collaborate with their composer for the movie's score. You can hear his guitarwork on a few tracks including the main theme if you listen closely.
ikr, hence this is why my ringtone of my phone😅silly me
It's a homage to Kaiju films and mecha anime. Guillermo is a huge Gundam geek. Cherno Alpha, the Russians mech was based on the Zaku model while Striker, the Australian one was based on a Gundam model. He said it himself when a Japanese variety show was following him when he was in Tokyo (for the movie premiere there) and visited the giant Gundam statue at DiverCity.
It also pretty clearly uses Evangelion’s basic framework for its story.
The double event Kaiju actually were designed to beat the triplets, Russians, and Australians. Because Newt drifted with the brain, the Kaiju creators learned what Newt knew about the Jaegers. So they created the Kaiju to have abilities to counter them. A long tail to keep the triplets at a distance. Acid to take care of the Russians' thick armor. And an EMP to stop the Australians.
8:54 In the movie novelization, there is mention of a emergency system called the Crisis Command Matrix, which transfers all jaeger functions to a single pilot. However, this is suicidal because, as mentioned in the intro, the neural overload would be too overwhelming.
41:50 I actually have the answer for that too. I read the movie novelization of Pacific Rim, and it mentions that when Gipsy Danger was rebuilt under Mako’s supervision, the jaeger was equipped with swords. Previously, it just relied on elbow rockets, plasma cannons, and physical strikes.
I can't believe ya'll missed the after credits scene... That was a good scene 💯🤷🤣
One of my favorite movies of all time, too bad it never got a sequel I dont understand why *cough*, it has a good netflix show tho. Anyways, I like that they didnt force any romantic interest at the end, just 2 soldiers grateful that they get to live another day.
@@StayFractalesque No the 2nd movie is a sequel , not a prequel.
@@stevenjump8234 There is no sequel to pacific rim
"There is no war in Ba Sing Se" Avatar: The Last Airbender / The Legend of Korra.
I absolutely love the scenes of how Pentecost first met Mako. Little Mana Ashida's performance really tugs at your heart showing Mako's loss, sadness and terror and then her awe, gratitude and elation, and Idris Elba looked so noble, strong and heroic (not to mention handsome) emerging from his Jaeger wiith the glowing light behind him.
When he was talking about “I tried it once, once.” he was talking about the Public Kaījū Bunker. He tried one and his eye got jacked. And yes, they’re after him. And the other scientist was ALSO right about how many Kaījū were coming to Earth.
They didn't use the sword because of the blood contamination, it doesn't cauterize wounds like the plasma cannon does
The "boat sword" moment first appeared right at the end of the first trailer for this movie. It was literally the most hyped-up moment in the entire film, and it did NOT disappoint!
Saw this in the theater and it was a lot of fun. I love Guillermo del Toro and really wish a studio would give him the go ahead to do his version of Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of Madness".
I know right! Movie studios need to stop dicking with him and just let the man work his magic!
When Gypsy Danger comes on to the beach, remember Raleigh knows that they are standing there, and the humans are not afraid of the Jaegers. I also love that scene because you get a sense of how massive everything is. It was a great movie.
You also get a sense of how much he struggled to get back to land since he was piloting solo, they were woken up around 2am and even after knifehead was killed it was pitch black. Then the cut to the shore it is bright and day
As someone loved Godzilla and other Kaiju movies when they were a kid, I was so happy when I saw this in theaters
The thing about mecha movie genre it's not all about the machine, but the people itself. Some series tends to have corny or miserable characters and kinda hard to pull this traits in live action, but Pacific Rim somehow nailed all of these characters very well imo
In the Hong Kong fight the math dude knew the portal was gonna stabilize enough to send 2 through no matter what. Charlie Day drifting made a 2 way connection with the hive mind on the other side, and just as he learned a bit about the kaiju, they learned who he was, and presumably exactly what jaegers were active (except for Gypsy) and sent those two kaiju through with abilities that hard countered the three of them.
I knew the official subtitle for gypsy was bugging me. But then it could also have been named Gipsy.
I wish more people saw this on IMAX like I did. Truly the format for this scale of a movie, was a blast!
Yeah, I sad it for the first time in IMAX, and it was one of the most impressive experiences I’ve ever had. It was unreal in how big and powerful it felt.
While there are simple in-universe explanations for why the sword came out last, concept-wise, it's an iconic part of the super-robot genre. Whether it's Voltron or the Power Rangers' Megazord, they always break out the sword as the big finisher.
One of the greatest mecha live actions ever made
Evangelion was great, but it's not for everyone. I think the remade movie(s) version in the last decade is probably more enjoyable for modern audiences. I personally liked Gundam Wing the most, but it was slowed paced for modern stuff. Big O was pretty good, too, especially the sound effects.
Yeah this movie actually surprised the hell out of everyone. Nobody was expecting it to be good and it was pretty damn good. Pacific rim is one of my favorite movies of all time. At least top five. I like it with all the old movies I grew up on like Jurassic Park judgment Day and Armageddon.
modern weebs dont know why Akira is god tier anime because the story is so weird and could care less about the animation. animation being the most important part of anime is long gone : (
Those films, though animated well, suffer from a lot of problems. Especially when condensing a 25 episodes worth of Content!
Same Rebuild 3.0 was the worst of the bunch. And it didn’t help that Asuka never got better in the animated versions.
@@danielramsey6141 I agree. One of the things I miss in modern film is just sitting in the moment. Ghost in the Shell has my favorite use of it. About the only time I see it anymore is Wes Anderson movies.
I tried it but couldnt get pass episode 3. It was too boring for me
So, fun fact, Gypsy Danger's startup voice is non other than Ellen McLain, the voice of GLADoS from the Portal Series.
To be technical, more close to 'Robot Jox' than Evangelion actually 😂
Omg... I haven't seen Robot Jox in years. I'd bout forgot about that lil gem of a movie 💯
this movie is a 10 out of 10 for me. absolutely love it
39:44 If I remember right they did that saying literally just because they could. They just wanted to have fun with the CGI and do something simple but very in detail. And it also kind of goes to what's happening at the moment considering the Kaiju were looking for Newton
This movie is indeed a love letter to Kaiju movies but also to anime, not using the sword until there was badass enough shot to use it is so anime. Just pulling your final move out immediately is not as cool :)
Happy 10th year anniversary Pacific Rim.
Saw this movie in IMAX when it first came out. The sheer scale and weight of the combatants in the fights was fantastic. That's something that absolutely got lost in the sequel in exchange for mindless flashiness and destruction.
I don’t think he predicted two because he saw it coming it was just based off how the frequency of them was increasing so he guessed they would see one every 8 hours. Also the reason the don’t use the sword early is because they don’t want to spill the blood everywhere.
Still my favorite kaiju movie. The yaegaers got hands for days
"You almost made me spit out my bone broth" Words never spoken before, for $500 Alex.
“The one who is not the narrator is going to die” 🤣🤣🤣 proper logic.
34:35 yeah the other guy did say they were going to be two but once the aliens on the other side tapped into his mind they wanted to use what he knows about everything to get advantage of the earth quicker, at least that's what I believe. That's why they change their objective to go after him
If you want to react to more Kaiju films, I HIGHLY recommend the following;
-Gojira (1954)
-Rodan (1956)
-King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962)
-Ghidorah: The Three Headed Monster (1964)
-Godzilla vs. Mothra (1964)
-Godzilla 2000 (1999)
-Godzilla vs. Spacegodzilla (1994)
-Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah (2001)
-Shin Godzilla (2016)
The Top 3 I MOSTLY recommend however, are;
-Gojira (1954)
-Godzilla vs. Mothra (1964)
-Shin Godzilla (2016)
These 3 are easily the best ones as of this list, especially Shin Godzilla.
The guy who Made Evangelion directed "Shin Godzilla" a few years ago, and you really feel the tone and vibe of Eva in it as well!
Why i thought what i'm saw reaction on the Pacific Rin on youre channel before?
Damn....
Anyway, i'm gonna enjoy this)
56:10.
Because the Sword was Mako’s idea! It was never part of the original design of the Gypsy Jager! She let her Co-pilot handle combat for them since this was their first fight together. Plus she forget to tell him all of the improvements that they’ve done to Gypsy since they really only had like to two days!
This film was amazing in the theater in 3D.
More like Godzilla VS Gundam!!!
Also this is one of the few movies I REALLY a wish I had seen in theaters, especially in IMAX.

"Unless there's a second one."
No. There is NOT.
How can someone not like Evangelion it’s in my top 10 ever
Are you gonna watch End of Evangelion and the Rebuilds? The rebuilds have the best animation I have ever seen in anime .
First PG-13 movie I saw in theaters when it came out. Saw it with my dad as a kid, absolutely loved it! One of my favorite movies! Soundtrack is such a banger as well!
I think with the sword, it was new to the Jaeger. Raleigh didn’t seem to know about it. That acting though…. “Ahhh, my arm!!!” Lol…
The brother, Charlie Hunam, was in Sons of anarchy, a show about motorcycle gangs, well worth a watch if you guys haven't watched it.
Awesome show with a fantastic soundtrack! Charlie Hunnam will always be Jax Teller in my eyes.
There's not even a bit of cynicism in this movie which is the best thing about it
Charlie Hunnan played Jax Teller on "Sons of Anarchy". He looks a lot different without the scraggly beard.
Ron Perlman played Clay Morrow on "Sons of Anarchy", as well as Hellboy in the first 2 "Hellboy" movies.
They were going to send 2 kaiju that time yes, the issue is that when Newt drifted with one the connection goes both ways, so the REST of the hive mind got the same info, and they were sent to get more/stop him from telling more by finding him as a secondary mision to destroying everything.
Herc did say ''or we can take these flare guns and do something really effing stupid''...
This movie has the same main perk as the transformers initial trilogy, absolutely awesome monsters/alien civilisation.
I mean the kaiju’s all look incredible and so interesting, then the species making them look even more interesting, I’d love to see one next to a human and more interaction with their kind, they seem like twice the size of a human with super advanced biological mechanisms and are clearly genius with a similar style to the kaijus which makes sense since they’d be inspired from their kind. The enemy is definitely something pacific rim got 10/10
She added the sword during the restoration so had no clue it existed
Nice reactions guys, now, you must NEVER see the second one. For pure love to the first one and for Guillermo del Toro you must forget the existence of the sequel, for good.
Gerimo del Toro love for the Kaiju/Tokusatsu genre is on point in this movie from
Godzilla
Ultraman
Super Sentai
It shows why he's the best director who should've done a Godzilla movie
6:18 yeah there's a couple of Godzilla ripoffs back in the day watch Gappa or Gorgo or Gamera especially the 90s trilogy that's amazing
You both are killing lately with the drops!
The sequel, PACIFIC RIM 2: UPRISING, was not well received by Critics or fans of the original as it was a box office disappointment, making $290 million dollars against a $150 million dollar budget.
I forgot how much I enjoyed this movie! I really liked the world alot. I didn't even know there was a sequel movie or an animated show made after this, I might have to check those out. I actually liked Mako a lot and Edris' character, I remember not being impressed with Charlike Hunnam he was just okay but he has since grown to be a really great actor so I'd really think it'd be cool if he returned for a third movie and they could definitely use better character building and story. Del Toro mentioned for the first film he knew it was simplistic story wise but he was going for more of a fun action film and I say why not have both? I think that makes for a movie that lasts.
As some people have already pointed out, one of the reasons they didn't go for the swords immediately is likely because of the environmental damage Kaiju blood does. But along with that, I think another point to be made is the extra strain that the weapons put on the pilots. The whole reason there is a two/multi pilot system is because even just moving a human shaped machine that size is taxing on the brain. Adding weapons is like adding more limbs, and the more additions, the more strain it puts on the pilots' minds. So while it's obviously possible to use the weapons for short periods without causing any damage to the pilots (and with more than two pilots it's possible to make even more modifications), if they can beat a Kaiju without them, they should, for their own long term health. Otherwise they'll likely wear themselves out faster.
On another topic, speaking as someone that outright hated Evangelion the first time I saw it, you might want to watch it again after a while. I actually don't really know that many people that really enjoyed it the first time, but for some reason it tends to hit different after a second watch through.
Love that movie. Thanks for your reaction!

If you guys liked the control scheme for the mecha in this movie then I’d recommend G Gundam as it has a similar concept for how they pilot. Also it’s a big fighting tournament
That one is more fun, and funny. But it’s still a ride to watch from start to finish.
The Best of the Gundam shows for me still has to Gundam 0080 War in the Pocket. And Gundam 00.
@@danielramsey6141 G Gundam literally just takes the book of tropes and beats you over the head with it until you're so punch drunk no high can compare, but it has nothing to do with the Gundam franchise other than giant robot with samurai headcrest. I know you lot may not see this, HUGE FAN of your channel, but this is my favorite movie next to the LOTR Trilogy:
--The reason why they didn't use the sword earlier in the fight was because of Kaiju Blue blood toxicity. In the Year One comic the Jaeger pilots were trained to not spill too much blood because it would make the area uninhabitable otherwise. They should have mentioned it in the movie but they did in the novel I think.
-SO the reason why people didn't live in the centres of countries is because those areas became so expensive to live in because they were safer and the coasts on the Rim were cheapest or cost nothing because they were technically no go zones.
-The reason why The Wall became a plot point was because Del Toro said in an interview "it's something stupid that a group of politicians would suggest".
-Alot of this movie was practical effects. They only made one cockpit and just changed the lighting to help you think this was a different yeagar i.e. Blue for Gipsy, Green for Cherno Alpha, Red for Crimson Typhoon, Orange and light blue for Striker etc.
-The inspiration for a lot of the movies designs were made because Del Toro had all the concept artists be cut off from any outside influences by all of them going down into his personal design studio he named "The Submarine" so that they could make completely original designs.
-In the beginning the aircraft that was destroyed by the Kaijus tail actually had Idris Elbas (Stacker) sister in there. Her best friend and Stacker became pilots together but she during the defense of Tokyo (as seen in the drift) she passed out from radiation sickness and Stacker was forced to pilot Coyote Tango himself. Because of their illnesses that was the last time they piloted together.
-They originally wanted Mako to speak nothing but Japanese in the original draft and as the movie progressed as the more Raleigh and Mako drifted they began speaking each others languages. Sadly this was scrapped and was utilised in another comic book story called Tales of the Drift (worth the read)
-Slattern (the final boss category 5 Kaiju) is bigger than Godzilla. If Big G could survive a nuclear blast so could Slattern I suppose.
- Stupidest thing said in this movie "They have two brains like a dinosaur" Dinosaurs never had second brains.
- Stupidest thing about this movie: 6 helicopters pulling a robot that weighs 1,980 tonnes...sure Jan.
-I thoroughly love this franchise because it so character rich and every part of this world drips with detail. Yeah it's monsters fighting robots but Del Toro said "so does that mean it can't have depth?". Every single character feels real, different people from different walks of life coming together to save the world, a lot fo the fight scenes were taken from a helicopter POV or bystander viewpoint and the robots have actual weight to their movements and directors usually avoid dark fight scenes but Del Toro and his team nialed it.
PLus one of the few movies where we Australians are properly represented as the badasses we are :P (I have a Striker Eureka tattoo)
Thanks for reading! Have a great day!-The reason why they didn't use the sword earlier in the fight was because of Kaiju Blue blood toxicity. In the Year One comic the Jaeger pilots were trained to not spill too much blood because it would make the area uninhabitable otherwise. They should have mentioned it in the movie but they did in the novel I think.
Anyone who enjoyed this movie, I recommend the novelization. Anyone who had trouble with the premise, I recommend the novelization. It wasn't as much of a fun ride as the movie but it makes up for it with details the movie really could't have shown. It's like neither is truly complete without the other.
A few samples of the details the novelization adds.
1. It's commonly said that the power of two human minds drifting isn't double one human mind. It's squared. Of the hundreds(?) of people to pilot a Jeager, only two have ever survived the strain of piloting solo. Raleigh, and Penticost.
That's the other reason Penticost was so determined to reactivate Raleigh.
2. It turns out Mako's family on her father's side (if I remember correctly) were traditional Japanese sword makers who had a real sexist thing going on, which is why Pentecost took her in instead.
Then Mako made the chain swords for Gypsy Danger.
Those weapons weren't just a means of vengeance for her, they were also a HUGE in-your-face to her dad's side of the family.
Neon Genesis isn't for everyone, it's too deep for most and that's okay
The problem with Evangelion is not that is too deep , is because the character are insufferable
The two bickering scientists are still my favorite part XD
I watched Neon Genesis decades ago and loved it then, except for the ending. They've made two other attempts at an ending since then, and none of them were completely satisfying, but the artwork for the time was just superb, and really set the standard for a lot of anime that followed. I don't imagine I'll be watching your reactions on Patreon, but I will take a look to see what other anime you've watched.
So a common theory about them not using the sword is that because the Kaiju blood is dangerous they use the sword has a last resort weapon because it spreads the blood everywhere unlike the plasma cannon that burns the kaijus wounds close
Ouch, Neon Genesis is my fav anime ever! LMAO its all good. Glad you guys enjoyed the movie!
Shoutout to the Bucees jacket! Peace and blessings yous twos, and to your family as well.
Marshall's speech is awesome!! "WE'RE CANCELLING THE APOCALYPSE!!" 💪😎💪
I subbed what seems like a week or two ago, yall were at about 180k or so, and your sub count seems to be climbing like wildfire, almost at 200k. You deserve it though, these reactions are entertaining
I love when they use the oil tanker as a baseball bat and knock the crap out of the Kaiju.
I really enjoy this movie, and the crazy thing is this is prolly one of guillermo del toro’s worst films. Crazy how talented and good he has been! Pans Labyrinth is in my Top 5 all time!
You aparently missed the part where the Australians dad said "we're dead in the water, now you wanna just dien or lets take these flare guns and do something REALLY STUPID" best line ever.
About the sword: 1) Blue poison blood everywhere, 2) If they'd come up to the second one with the sword out it might have been able to defend against it, and 3) Giant robot anime never use the sword first.
Pacific Rim is a great cure for Neon Genesis blues. Such a fun movie.
Buc-ee’s!!!!
39:39 When the Gipsy Danger is fighting the second Kaiju in Hong Kong, it punches through a building and sets off a set of Newton's balls (or Newton's cradle). The scientist that the Kaiju was chasing is named Dr. Newton Geizler.
This one makes my brain do a happy.
They literally explain that the Kaiju adapt to things, Hence not using the sword till later so they don't adapt defense for it...
The drift works both ways so that’s why the kaiju prioritized striker more than gypsy since they knew of the bomb on them. And why they knew to use the emp on the jaegers since newt knew about them.
Yes, the Kaiju were after the guy who drifted with them, because obviously he now knew things about their civilization that they did not want the humans to know. In essence, that guy was caught spying on their secret plans and now the monsters need to silence him.
