5 Simple Ways To Increase Your Happiness

- So recently I went through a phase where I felt disconnected from my desire to live a more simple, minimalist lifestyle. I was living in another apartment, and it had a lot of stuff. And I felt uninspired, dull, moody. At one point I was literally visualizing living in an empty apartment with just a bed and the absolute basics, like a toothbrush, a cup and a plate. Nothing else but space…
However, you can’t always control your environment. But what you can control are your actions.
So this experience led me to revisit why I was originally drawn to minimalism and living simply. What it means to me, what I hope to achieve. And a big reason is how it makes me feel. It grounds me, helps me to focus on the things I care about.
I’ve found that there are 5 proactive steps I can take that will lighten up my mood and make me feel happier, even - or perhaps especially - when my environment pushes me in a different direction.

getting rid of stuff always lifts my mood.
I can relate, finally decluttering stuff that is just clutter releases some emotional weight in our mind. And it create space for what we truly care about.
On gratitude, for years my bus to work passed the rows of people living in tents. I didn't need anything else to remind me to feel grateful for having a (rented) bedroom with access to bathroom and kitchen.
That is a great reminder to practice gratitude! ✨
You can't control the environment, but what you can control is your action 💯✨
Indeed!
Great to do list - thank you. So glad you mentioned having a reading habit ; going to the local library is a free, community resource, where captivating, interesting, books can be found. All the things you mentioned certainly wont "burn a hole in your pocket" either , which is nice .
Reading is a great way to get out of your head and into another world, especially when reading fiction. Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed the video! 😀
Every single point you made in this video is fantastic. I was nodding along the whole time :D Gratitude, Nature, Specialty Cofffe (or Tea), reduced phone usage and books, books, books. What more could you want? Thank you Peter, great video as always!
Glad you enjoyed it! Typing this while I'm sipping on that coffee ☕️ 😉
Thank you again, I feel the same way about too many stuff. Nature and coffee is good medicin😃
Spending time in nature 🏞️ and a good cup of coffee ☕ are great ways to lift the spirit. Thanks for watching!
As always great video Peter, thanks for the tips. I recognize that being happy is not as easy as flipping a switch, but with good self-control, you can become at least more optimistic about life.Let’s start every day with a smile, you have to try. Greetings from Barcelona.🤗
Well put, Beatriz. Thanks for watching! 😀
This is just a reminder to me that everyone is different yet struggle at times with happiness and suffering, for me I’m just tired of shallow talk at times but I believe to be shallow about my problems is best and don’t ask how I come to this but I believe it’s healthier I can see why they scramble brains in the 50s and I made no gainful ways of being happy in certain environments I just can’t and so what
Really great tips in here that aren't the ordinary like exercise and write a gratitude list! I love your videos because you really put a lot of thought into them. You are so right about reading - I need to find some books that I will love rather than just reading what I think I should!
Thank you for the video. Some tips:
1. Going to the gym or a nice bike ride or hike
2. Totally agree: read a book!
3. Do something for someone else
4. Connect with your partner, friends or family
5. Make a nice meal or bake some banana bread
6. Explore your own city or area: usually there is so much more to see and do than you know
7. Listen with attention to your favorite music
8. Dance!
9. Sing!
Ciao Simone
Thanks for sharing these great tips, Simone! 🙏
Love that you mentioned shinrinyoku! It is very fascinating to me & something that I plan to dive deeply into this year ☺
It's a very interesting idea! I actually talked about it in my very first CZcams video, where I went on a hike in a forest: Slow Living in Winter: How Snow Calms Me Down (czcams.com/video/4rTeiULHS6Q/video.html).
Maybe I'll dedicate a full video to this shinrinyoku one day. 🌳
As I've also read Project Hail Mary (and loved this whole book), I find it quite sad that you've spoiled big part of the book while describing it. The most amazing experience about this book (in my opinion obviously) is the steady unraveling of the story, where at the beginning you're as clueless as the main character, and you learn about everything as the plot progresses. So as a tip for the future, I'd recommend either second-thinking about the parts of the book you'd want to talk about, or indicate beforehand that you're going to spoil it :)
This is a fair point. When I made the video, I didn't feel I gave away too much. But on second thought, I see your point. I had a similar experience reading it as you, big part of the excitement is how the story unravels. I'll keep this in mind for future videos, thanks for the valuable feedback. 🙏🏻
I really like this dude. Good tips and chill vibe
Nice video, Peter! Thank you!

Thank you, appreciate you watching it 🙏🏻
Re: reading how do you stop it sending you to sleep?
For me, it starts with picking books I'm interested in. If it has passed that test but it turns out to be so boring that it puts me to sleep, I just stop reading the book altogether and move on to the next.
I don't read a book in bed before going to sleep, I tend to lose focus and get sleepy pretty quickly then. Instead, I prefer listening to a podcast (not business podcasts; something relaxing like a storytelling podcast). That way, I can already close my eyes and slowly drift off.
Thank you for the video! Another good children's book is The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo. It's worth looking in to if you have not read it yet.
Thanks for the book tip, Elizabeth! 🙌
